Hearts In The Wasteland: Redeeming The Moral Self In Corrections, Allison M. Hicks
Hearts In The Wasteland: Redeeming The Moral Self In Corrections, Allison M. Hicks
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"In this article, I examine the emotional culture of prisons as perceived by prison chaplains, a population characterized by conflicting expectations and split loyalties. Expected to enforce institutional rules and punish rule violators, chaplains are also charged with the spiritual rehabilitation of their clients. Greer (2002) argues that prisons represent rich environments for exploring emotion management, being simultaneously emotionally inciting and constraining for those individuals living and working within them. To better understand this duality, I explore chaplains’ interpersonal management of inmates’ emotions. Based on qualitative interview data, I describe some of the assumptions chaplains make about inmates’ emotions and …

Simulating The Cognitive Networks Using Cloud To Solve Hidden Terminal Problem, Stephen Ellis
Simulating The Cognitive Networks Using Cloud To Solve Hidden Terminal Problem, Stephen Ellis
Academic Summit
The proposed research incorporates the cognitive radio networks with cloud application (CR NC). The cloud manages the query processing, cognitive nodes status, scheduling of requests, and real-time maintenance of a node table. The node’s channel status operates with a direct reflection of the cloud’s database and its real-time record of each channel on each node. The database was connected to the simulation using the python MySql database connector module, and the XA MP package was used to facilitate real-time activity and monitoring. The cloud simulation helps to eliminate IEEE request to send and request clear to send (RT S/CT S) …
Beyond Infrastructure: Broadband For Development In Remote And Indigenous Regions, Heather E. Hudson
Beyond Infrastructure: Broadband For Development In Remote And Indigenous Regions, Heather E. Hudson
ISER Articles
Recent telecommunications stimulus projects in the U.S. and Canada were intended to increase availability of broadband through funding infrastructure investments, largely in rural and remote regions. However, true access involves more than availability; it also includes affordability and adoption. This paper presents a framework for analyzing broadband adoption that takes into consideration geographical, economic and cultural environments in indigenous communities. It includes an overview of potential social and economic impacts of broadband in remote areas, using examples from the Alaska study and the Canadian North. It then reports on results of an evaluation of Internet use and potential adoption of …

Defining The Lifeblood: The Search For A Sensible Ministerial Exception Test, Summer E. Allen
Defining The Lifeblood: The Search For A Sensible Ministerial Exception Test, Summer E. Allen
Pepperdine Law Review
Over the past 40 years, the circuit courts have acknowledged a ministerial exception to Title VII and other anti-discrimination laws that gives churches the freedom to determine who serves in ministerial roles as a voice of a church’s faith. In January of 2012, the Supreme Court officially adopted the exception into its jurisprudence. The opinion, however, left many questions unanswered. Mainly, the decision failed to give any guidance to lower courts regarding who is and who is not a minister. This article traces the history of the ministerial exception and the church autonomy doctrine back to the Religion Clauses in …

Effective reentry is an important component of the mission of the Suffolk County House of Correction and of its reentry programing. The maintenance of public safety depends largely on the institution’s ability to help offenders successfully reintegrate back into their communities. Connecting inmates to community-based programs, services, and support before they leave prison can help ensure that they will become productive members of their community.
