The Nuclear Triangle: A Case Study In Nuclear Operations Policy, Jordan Lewis Apr 2013

The Nuclear Triangle: A Case Study In Nuclear Operations Policy, Jordan Lewis

Honors Theses

As nuclear power has evolved from the mid-twentieth century to today, it has experienced phases of rapid growth, regulation, and distrust concerning operations and waste disposal. This study will analyze the policy community active in these changes as they have progressed through the policymaking process and will examine the actors within an "iron triangle" framework to evaluate the community's relationships, power structure, and effectiveness. Specifically, this thesis seeks to answer two research questions: 1) how does interest group behavior influence nuclear policy communities, and 2) does the iron triangle framework explain the nuclear policy community relationships and outcomes. While historical …

Trophies, Plaques, And Rewards: An Application Of Cognitive Evaluation Theory To Volunteer Motivation., John Kim Apr 2013

Trophies, Plaques, And Rewards: An Application Of Cognitive Evaluation Theory To Volunteer Motivation., John Kim

Theses and Dissertations

Using Cognitive Evaluation Theory, this research evaluated the impact non-monetary extrinsic incentives in the form of department t-shirts had on the intrinsic motivation of Virginia career and volunteer firefighters. Intrinsic motivation was measured using the Work Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation Scale (WEIMS). The survey was administered to a randomly selected sample of firefighters. Data was analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Results suggested that the department t-shirt did not have a statistically significant impact on intrinsic motivation of both career and volunteer firefighters. Additionally, this study suggested that volunteer firefighters did not perceive salary as an inequitable reward. This was exhibited …

Characterization And Interpretation Of Volcanic Activity At Redoubt, Bezymianny And Karymsky Volcanoes Through Direct And Remote Measurements Of Volcanic Emissions, Taryn M. Lopez Apr 2013

Characterization And Interpretation Of Volcanic Activity At Redoubt, Bezymianny And Karymsky Volcanoes Through Direct And Remote Measurements Of Volcanic Emissions, Taryn M. Lopez

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Surface measurements of volcanic emissions can provide critical insight into subsurface processes at active volcanoes such as the influx or ascent of magma, changes in conduit permeability, and relative eruption size. In this dissertation I employ direct and remote measurements of volcanic emissions to characterize activity and elucidate subsurface processes at three active volcanoes around the North Pacific. The 2009 eruption of Redoubt Volcano, Alaska, produced elevated SO2 emissions that were detected by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) satellite sensor for over three months. This provided a rare opportunity to characterize Redoubt's daily SO2 emissions and to validate the OMI …

A Broke(N) System: Comment On The Supreme Court's Decision To Rule On The Equal Access Provision In Douglas V. Independent Living Center, And Its Potential Impact On The Affordable Care Act, Megan Waugh Apr 2013

A Broke(N) System: Comment On The Supreme Court's Decision To Rule On The Equal Access Provision In Douglas V. Independent Living Center, And Its Potential Impact On The Affordable Care Act, Megan Waugh

Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary

This comment first provides a historical and legal backdrop of the Medicaid system, the Equal Access Provision and private individuals' enforcement of the Equal Access Provision through litigation in order to analyze the outcome of Douglas in light of the Supreme Court's decision in the Affordable Care Act Case. Then taking that analysis, this article recommends an approach to handle either a cause of action or no cause of action under the Supremacy Clause upon the implementation of PPACA.
