Elements: Elementary Teachers Of Science – Building Collaborations Between Content And Pedagogy Communities, Krista Adams, Jenny Melander
Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series
The current UNL elementary teaching program does not include a science methods practicum in which pre‐service elementary teachers could observe and teach reformed based science lessons in the classroom setting. The science methods course was modified during Spring 2013 to address this missing component. The exploratory course engages pre‐service teachers in designing and implementing a science unit (a series of lessons) to be taught as a science club in an after school program for K – 5th grade students. In Fall 2013, the course experiences expanded to include collaborating with biomedical engineering students in connecting real‐world applications to teaching science. …

Investigation Of Thermal Cycle And Hardness Distribution In The Laser Cladding Of Aisi H13 Tool Steel Produced By A High Power Direct Diode Laser, Parisa Farahmand, Prabu Balu, Fanrong Kong, Radovan Kovacevic
Mechanical Engineering Research
Laser cladding (LC) of tool steel has significant application in rapid tooling, and surface coating for worn-out components in different industries. During the LC process, several phase transformations influence the microstructural and mechanical properties of the deposited layer. In order to successfully implement the LC process, it is essential to understand the relationship between the thermal cycle (heating and cooling), phase transformations, and the output quantities of the deposited layer. In this study a direct diode laser with a power of up to 8 kW was used to deposit AISI H13 tool steel on mild steel grade A36 substrate to …

Above-Threshold Ionization As Temporal Multi-Slit Interference, William B. Laing Iii, B.D. Esry
Above-Threshold Ionization As Temporal Multi-Slit Interference, William B. Laing Iii, B.D. Esry
Faculty Works
When atoms are subjected to a laser pulse of sufficiently high intensity, electrons are ionized by absorbing multiple photons in excess of the ionization potential. The resulting sequence of peaks in the photoelectron spectrum separated by the energy of one photon is called ``above-threshold ionization'' (ATI). This time-independent description of ATI invokes the language of photons, even though calculations are performed using the time-dependent Schrodinger equation with a classical electric field. We demonstrate that the energy-periodic structure of ATI can be understood from the interference of ionized electron wavepackets produced periodically each half-cycle of the laser field. Using this simple …

Starfish Search, Ethan Criss
Starfish Search, Ethan Criss
Theses
Starfish Search is a swarm optimization algorithm that operates in the same vein as
Particle Swarm Optimization and the Firefly Algorithm. This search algorithm attempts to find global optimal solutions to optimization problems by dispersing agents into the search space. Each agent consists of many nodes that represent candidate solutions to the problem being solved. Agent's nodes are formatted in a parent-child hierarchy, similar to tree structures, which facilitates information passing to a root node. With this structure, it becomes possible to determine the likely direction in which an optimal lies. By using a form of linear regression, the fitness …

Synergies For A Wave-Wind Energy Concept, C Perez-Collazo, Mm Jakobsen, H Buckland, J Fernandez-Chozas
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In recent years, with more and more offshore wind farms being constructed, the question arises as to the possibility of integrating other marine renewables together with offshore wind. This integration presents a number of advantages, including a better utilisation of the marine space and lower installation costs relative to separate installations. Therefore, new hybrid or multiplatform solutions are being developed. This work is focused on the integration of Wave Energy Converters (WECs) into offshore wind farms. Furthermore, the sustainable development of both offshore wind and wave industries requires a reasonable and responsible use of the natural resources, optimizing their exploitation …

Spectral Energy Distributions Of Type 1 Agn In Xmm-Cosmos – Ii. Shape Evolution, Heng Hao, Martin Elvis, Francesca Civano, Gianni Zamorani
Dartmouth Scholarship
The mid-infrared to ultraviolet (0.1 -- 10 μm) spectral energy distribution (SED) shapes of 407 X-ray-selected radio-quiet type 1 AGN in the wide-field ``Cosmic Evolution Survey" (COSMOS) have been studied for signs of evolution. For a sub-sample of 200 radio-quiet quasars with black hole mass estimates and host galaxy corrections, we studied their mean SEDs as a function of a broad range of redshift, bolometric luminosity, black hole mass and Eddington ratio, and compared them with the Elvis et al. (1994, E94) type 1 AGN mean SED. We found that the mean SEDs in each bin are closely similar to …

Aims. According to previously published Doppler images of the magnetically active primary giant component of the RS CVn binary II Peg, the surface of the star was dominated by one single active longitude that was clearly drifting in the rotational frame of the binary system during 1994-2002; later imaging for 2004–2010, however, showed decreased and chaotic spot activity, with no signs of the drift pattern. Here we set out to investigate from a more extensive photometric dataset whether this drift is a persistent phenomenon, in which case it could be caused either by an azimuthal dynamo wave or be an …

We present a broadband study of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 091024A within the context of other ultra-long-duration GRBs. An unusually long burst detected by Konus–Wind (KW), Swift, and Fermi, GRB 091024A has prompt emission episodes covering ∼1300 s, accompanied by bright and highly structured optical emission captured by various rapid-response facilities, including the 2 m autonomous robotic Faulkes North and Liverpool Telescopes, KAIT, S-LOTIS, and the Sonoita Research Observatory. We also observed the burst with 8 and 10 m class telescopes and determine the redshift to be z = 1.0924 ± 0.0004. We find no correlation between the optical and γ-ray …
A Two-Step Estimation Procedure And A Goodness-Of-Fit Test For Spatial Extremes Models, Hongwei Shang
A Two-Step Estimation Procedure And A Goodness-Of-Fit Test For Spatial Extremes Models, Hongwei Shang
Doctoral Dissertations
Parametric max-stable processes are increasingly used to model spatial extremes. Since the dependence structure is specified for block maxima, the data used for inference are block maxima from all sites. To improve the estimation efficiency, we propose a two-step approach with composite likelihood that utilizes site-wise daily records in addition to block maxima. Besides the parameter estimation, there is no formal model checking and diagnosis method for spatial extremes modeling yet. Model diagnosis in practice has been informal and mostly based on visual checking tools such as residual plot and quantile-quantile plot. We proposed a goodness-of-fit test for max-stable processes …

Comparing The Cumulative Pain Patients Experience Waiting For Knee Arthroplasty To Their Postoperative Pain, Eric S. Schwenk, Richard H. Epstein, Md, Cphims, Franklin Dexter
Comparing The Cumulative Pain Patients Experience Waiting For Knee Arthroplasty To Their Postoperative Pain, Eric S. Schwenk, Richard H. Epstein, Md, Cphims, Franklin Dexter
Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers
Introduction: Reduction of pain is a major goal of anesthesiologists treating patients undergoing knee arthroplasty. This has been achieved traditionally through the use of regional analgesia. Although these techniques decrease postoperative pain, they inherently do not affect the longstanding pain patients experience as they wait for surgery. Our objectives were to quantify: 1) the decrease in pain achieved by surgical joint replacement; and 2) the decrease in postoperative pain achievable through femoral nerve blocks versus opioids. From a systems-based perspective, we wanted to determine how much reduction in waiting time before surgery would be necessary to achieve an equal cumulative …

Macrocyclic lactones such as abamectin and ivermectin constitute an important class of broad-spectrum insecticides. Widespread resistance to synthetic insecticides, including abamectin and ivermectin, poses a serious threat to the management of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), a major pest of cruciferous plants worldwide. P-glycoprotein (Pgp), a member of the ABC transporter superfamily, plays a crucial role in the removal of amphiphilic xenobiotics, suggesting a mechanism for drug resistance in target organisms. In this study, PxPgp1, a putative Pgp gene from P. xylostella, was cloned and characterized. The open reading frame (ORF) of PxPgp1 consists of 3774 …
Dense Point Cloud Extraction From Oblique Imagery, Jie Zhang
Dense Point Cloud Extraction From Oblique Imagery, Jie Zhang
Theses
With the increasing availability of low-cost digital cameras with small or medium sized sensors, more and more airborne images are available with high resolution, which enhances the possibility in establishing three dimensional models for urban areas. The high accuracy of representation of buildings in urban areas is required for asset valuation or disaster recovery. Many automatic methods for modeling and reconstruction are applied to aerial images together with Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. If LiDAR data are not provided, manual steps must be applied, which results in semi-automated technique.
The automated extraction of 3D urban models can be aided …
The Kronecker-Weber Theorem: An Exposition, Amber Verser
The Kronecker-Weber Theorem: An Exposition, Amber Verser
Lawrence University Honors Projects
This paper is an investigation of the mathematics necessary to understand the Kronecker-Weber Theorem. Following an article by Greenberg, published in The American Mathematical Monthly in 1974, the presented proof does not use class field theory, as the most traditional treatments of the theorem do, but rather returns to more basic mathematics, like the original proofs of the theorem. This paper seeks to present the necessary mathematical background to understand the proof for a reader with a solid undergraduate background in abstract algebra. Its goal is to make what is usually an advanced topic in the study of algebraic number …

Systematic, mandated facilitation of school transitions is an important but understudied aspect of the Reggio-Emilia approach to early childhood education admired internationally as best practice. We studied the links between Northern Italian transition practices and academic achievement, school liking, cooperativeness, and problem behaviors. We followed 288 students across a transition from preschool to elementary school. Schools varied in their implementation of transition practices. High implementation of Reggio-type transition practices was related to significantly more school liking and significantly fewer problem behaviors after the transition. At follow-up at the end of the post-transition year, high-implementation schools were still characterized by lower …
Visuo-Proprioceptive Interactions During Adaptation Of The Human Reach, Timothy Judkins, Robert A. Scheidt
Visuo-Proprioceptive Interactions During Adaptation Of The Human Reach, Timothy Judkins, Robert A. Scheidt
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
We examined whether visual and proprioceptive estimates of transient (mid-reach) target capture errors contribute to motor adaptation according to the probabilistic rules of information integration used for perception. Healthy adult humans grasped and moved a robotic handle between targets in the horizontal plane while the robot generated spring-like loads that varied unpredictably from trial-to-trial. For some trials, a visual cursor faithfully tracked hand motion. In others, the handle's position was locked and subjects viewed motion of a point-mass cursor driven by hand forces. In yet other trials, cursor feedback was dissociated from hand motion or altogether eliminated. We used time- …

Defending Against Heap Overflow By Using Randomization In Nested Virtual Clusters, Chee Meng Tey, Debin Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Heap based buffer overflows are a dangerous class of vulnerability. One countermeasure is randomizing the location of heap memory blocks. Existing techniques segregate the address space into clusters, each of which is used exclusively for one block size. This approach requires a large amount of address space reservation, and results in lower location randomization for larger blocks.
