How Trees Behave-Or Do They?, Verlyn Flieger
How Trees Behave-Or Do They?, Verlyn Flieger
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Flieger takes as her departure point a passage on tree-spirits in one of the manuscripts for “On Fairy-stories,” and considers the development of Tolkien’s ideas about more-or-less enspirited trees throughout his oeuvre. Begins with the earliest appearance of Old Man Willow in the Tom Bombadil poems, progressing through his maturation as an idea in The Lord of the Rings. Pays special attention to Treebeard and the Huorns, and ends with the birch tree in Smith of Wootton Major.

Forced To Learn: Community-Based Correctional Education, Ron Mottern, C. Amelia Davis, Mary F. Ziegler
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"Community-based correctional education has received scant attention in adult literacy research yet mandatory education is a growing part of the legal system and is fueled by research that suggests a link between correctional education and lower rates of recidivism. Growth in alternative to prison programs affects local ABE and GED programs. Adults who attend community-based correctional programs as a condition of their probation or parole face many challenges. The purpose of this existential-phenomenological study was to understand the experience of those adults. Findings describe students’ experiences of being forced to attend a GED program. Opening a space for these stories …

Sisyphus Rolls On: Reframing Women's Ways Of “Making It” In Rhetoric And Composition, Kristin Bivens, Martha Mckay Canter, Kirsti Cole, Violet Dutcher, Morgan Gresham, Luisa Rodriguez-Connal, Eileen Schell
Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion
This is a multi-vocal, multi-institutional piece that examines ways women "make it" in rhetoric and composition. It is in the spirit of being more inclusive that we present our ideas about women's ways of making it in rhetoric and composition. This inclusiveness includes a written transcript of our audio narratives. Humbly, we present our work in this piece after four years of writing and revising in the work spaces we all know so well and offer several glimpses of the work women do as writing teachers. We honor all of the women who teach writing -- those who have made …
J.R.R. Tolkien, Fanfiction, And "The Freedom Of The Reader", Megan B. Abrahamson
J.R.R. Tolkien, Fanfiction, And "The Freedom Of The Reader", Megan B. Abrahamson
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Student paper award, Mythcon 2013. Abrahamson makes a particularly convincing case for the validity of fanfiction by applying Tolkien’s own statements about the “dominion of the author,” the “Cauldron of Story,” and subcreation to the issue. Discusses Tolkien’s experiences with early fanwork and his own use of sources as an author.
Troy And The Rings: Tolkien And The Medieval Myth Of England, Michael Livingston
Troy And The Rings: Tolkien And The Medieval Myth Of England, Michael Livingston
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Asserts that, far from abandoning his early grounding in the classics upon discovering Northern mythology and languages, Greek and Roman motifs remained an important element of Tolkien’s “soup” and he used them in many ways in The Lord of the Rings. Livingston pays particular attention to themes, characters, incidents, and Mediterranean history that have roots in The Iliad. Family structure is one place where we can see convincing parallels, with Boromir as an asterisk-Hector and Faramir as an asterisk-Paris, rewriting the deficiencies in their source-characters as Gondor is the history of Troy re-written.
The Hobbit And The Father Christmas Letters, Kris Swank
The Hobbit And The Father Christmas Letters, Kris Swank
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Traces the mutual influences of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and the letters he wrote to his children in the person of Father Christmas. Similar themes in Roverandom and The Book of Lost Tales are also discussed. She tracks the development of several motifs that appear throughout, like irascible wizards, playful elves, invented languages, impudent bears, and fireworks.
Understanding And Teaching Variations Of Every-Day Business Language And Behavior In German-Speaking Countries, Margrit V. Zinggeler
Understanding And Teaching Variations Of Every-Day Business Language And Behavior In German-Speaking Countries, Margrit V. Zinggeler
Global Advances in Business Communication
Conventions of informal versus formal language patterns and behaviors in business settings have changed in the various German-speaking countries over the last decades resulting from American modes of interpersonal communication and BELF (Gerritsen and Nickerson 2008), yet current textbooks for Business German and Communication do not address the trend of more informal language (linguistically different) and the new reality adequately. Data on every-day language usage and behavior in a professional environment in German-speaking countries and regions are presented in this paper. The provisional result of data is the basis for a teaching module and recommendations on how to address and …
Japanese Global Companies: The Shift From Multinationals To Multiculturals, Naoki Kameda
Japanese Global Companies: The Shift From Multinationals To Multiculturals, Naoki Kameda
Global Advances in Business Communication
The purpose of this paper is to present a new paradigm of culture and society within the context of global management, introducing the concept of a “multi-cultural company” instead of a “multinational company.” Globalization and multi-polarization of consumer markets are expanding in the world. The well-documented cases of both the BRICS and MINTS+V countries illustrate this new and borderless trend. Two further examples beyond these two point to a future trend. First, the Islamic market is expanding with a little over two billion people, its consumers backed up by the Islamic financial system. The second example comes with the ever-increasing …

Discovering Russian Research: Digitizing Local And Family Historical Documents, Kathryn Pope Blomberg, Thom Edlund
Discovering Russian Research: Digitizing Local And Family Historical Documents, Kathryn Pope Blomberg, Thom Edlund
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As a student of Family History Research with Russian language skills, I have become very interested in learning the process of research for the areas that have been controlled by either the Czars or the USSR. Thus, I decided to go on an internship to a Russian speaking country to compliment my studies in Imperial Russian and Soviet genealogical research. Although I am a novice or maybe especially since I am a novice I felt this would be very beneficial to my studies. My faculty mentor Thom Edlund and I developed a project that would enable me to further my …

Playing Set® To Discover Qualitative Data Analysis, Jean Scandlyn, Sarah Hautzinger
Playing Set® To Discover Qualitative Data Analysis, Jean Scandlyn, Sarah Hautzinger
The Qualitative Report
This article describes the use of an experiential classroom exercise using the card game Set® to introduce concepts related to qualitative approaches to research design and analysis, particularly those based in an interpretive framework. The multiple components of the game, which centers on visual pattern recognition, parallel the “organic” complexity of ethnographic investigation and demonstrate how strong interpretations can be supported with qualitative evidence. The first author adapted the exercise, originally developed by the second author for teaching undergraduate anthropology students, for use in workshops teaching qualitative research to mid - career professionals working on health - related projects in …

Prototype Modeling Vs. Item Response Theory – A Paradigm Shift For Measurement Professionals, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer, Juliette Faughnan, Christophe Geerkens
Prototype Modeling Vs. Item Response Theory – A Paradigm Shift For Measurement Professionals, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer, Juliette Faughnan, Christophe Geerkens
The Qualitative Report
In science, the usual research mode is to discover cause - and - effect mechanisms operating behind superficial reality. Aviation, for example, uses prototype modeling to develop improved aircraft from one generation to the next. In stark contrast to prototype modeling’s search for causal mechanisms, assessment technologies remain dominated by probability strategies — which is why psychological assessment lags behind the hard sciences. A major difference in results exists between inferences produced through item response theory versus the cause - effect prototyping strategies of aerospace and other techno - savvy industries. Parallel to aerospace strategies, systems analysis of language, using …

2013 New England Association for Asian Studies Conference
Integrating cross-cultural education into language instruction has been a considerable challenge for second language educators, becoming even more challenging when teaching languages for specific purposes, such as business, which faces significantly increased global competition. This paper presents a few pedagogical strategies I utilized to implement cultural components in advanced business Chinese instruction with the purpose of enhance students’ cross-cultural competence. The first part focuses on strategies of selecting appropriate teaching materials to create a dynamic context for cross-cultural language learning. While adopting Yuan Fangyuan’s Business Chinese for Success: Real Cases from Real Companies as the textbook, I have integrated a …

Sustainability Of Expansion In An African Airline: A Case Study, Sisay Asefa, Allen Batteau, Lisa Whittaker, Hung-Sying Jing
Sustainability Of Expansion In An African Airline: A Case Study, Sisay Asefa, Allen Batteau, Lisa Whittaker, Hung-Sying Jing
International Journal of African Development
Ethiopian Air Lines (Ethiopian) has committed to the purchase of 41 new aircraft, nearly doubling their fleet and introducing three new, state-of-the-art types (the A350-900 and the 787-8, and the DA40NG) into a fleet currently consisting of seven models. In a logistically complex industry, this represents a substantial increase in resource commitments and management responsibility in many areas including maintenance, pilot training, facilities, and route planning. The purpose of this paper is to examine this growth strategy, its underlying assumptions, and its sustainability given long-range industry trends in both the developed and the developing world. Using corporate and industry data, …
What Does It Mean To Be A “Materially Attuned” Practitioner?, Maiko Tsutsumi
What Does It Mean To Be A “Materially Attuned” Practitioner?, Maiko Tsutsumi
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper reports on research in progress that explores the potential role the materiality of things plays as a tool for the critical understanding of the human relationship with man-made objects. The paper argues that many designers habitually engage with production and consumption of meanings more through the materiality of things than words and symbols. It proposes a hypothesis that materiality is a key to understanding the context, knowledge and information the man-made objects may “embody”. Through the case study of an exhibition, the paper examines the ways in which this embodiment may be facilitated. Referring to Heidegger’s notion of …

Flexiterm: A Flexible Term Recognition Method, Irena Spasić, Mark Greenwood, Alun Preece, Nick Francis, Glyn Elwyn
Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: The increasing amount of textual information in biomedicine requires effective term recognition methods to identify textual representations of domain-specific concepts as the first step toward automating its semantic interpretation. The dictionary look-up approaches may not always be suitable for dynamic domains such as biomedicine or the newly emerging types of media such as patient blogs, the main obstacles being the use of non-standardised terminology and high degree of term variation.
