Does Residence In An Ethnic Community Help Immigrants In A Recession?, Pengyu Zhu, Cathy Yang Liu, Gary Painter Oct 2013

Does Residence In An Ethnic Community Help Immigrants In A Recession?, Pengyu Zhu, Cathy Yang Liu, Gary Painter

Urban Studies and Community Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research on how the residential segregation of immigrant populations has impacted their labor market outcomes presents many challenges because of the fact that immigrants often choose to locate near co-ethnics to share resources and cultural amenities. Because not all immigrants choose to live in these ethnic communities, identification of a causal effect on living in an ethnic community is problematic. The estimation of the effect of living in these ethnic communities is also difficult because it is ambiguous whether such residence will help or harm the labor market outcomes of immigrants. This study implements a number of approaches to help …

Impact Of Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders And Traumatic Brain Injury On Speech-Language Treatment: Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perspectives, Janis Whitney Neal Oct 2013

Impact Of Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders And Traumatic Brain Injury On Speech-Language Treatment: Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perspectives, Janis Whitney Neal

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Previous studies have associated traumatic brain injury (TBI) with higher rates of psychiatric disorders. This study investigated speech-language pathologists’ (SLPs) perspectives on the prevalence of co-occurring psychiatric disorders in the TBI population and its impact on speech-language treatment. Interviews were conducted with twelve SLPs working with a TBI population. Results revealed a lack of standard measures to assist SLPs in distinguishing between the symptoms of psychiatric disorders versus the neuropsychiatric symptoms of TBI. Also, results indicated the heavy reliance on a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive and individualized treatment for the TBI clientele, and the negative consequences of untreated psychiatric …

Using I Poems To Hear The Voices And Understand The Actions Of Edd Students Conducting Action Research, Ron Zambo, Debby Zambo

The Qualitative Report

There is a movement to redefine and refocus the Educational Doctorate to improve its effectiveness in producing scholarly practitioners, that is, individuals who have the ability to blend their practical wisdom and professional knowledge to identify, frame , and solve the problems of practice they face. The EdD at Arizona State University has chosen action research as its signature pedagogy to help students develop the habits of the mind, hands and heart they need to be effective leaders. This paper describes the program and provides six I Poems developed from dissertation proposals. I Poems helped us come closer to each …

Developing Design Thinking Expertise In Higher Education, Andrew Withell, Neil Haigh

Learn X Design Conference Series

Design Thinking describes a human-centred methodology for innovation, which has evolved from the study of the unique ways in which designers 'think', and 'practice'. There is growing evidence of the increased uptake of Design Thinking in design, business and other disciplines, and there is an emerging body of research. There is a need to develop sound University curricula that are founded in relevant theory and research findings, however, there appears to be a relatively small amount of rigorous research on the learning and teaching of Design Thinking. This paper presents the initial stages of a PhD research project that explores …

Low-Tech Skills In High-Tech Solutions Era: The Cognitive Benefits Of Basic Craft Techniques In Formal Design Education, Gordana Vrencoska

Learn X Design Conference Series

The formal design education in the 21st century is confronted with an expanding list of challenges: knowledge availability on the Internet; handicraft vs. computer skills; amateurism; specialist vs. multidisciplinary curriculums; national vs. international agendas, etc. In a multifaceted design education where everything is accessible and the disciplines’ borders are blurred, there is a rising necessity for structured and intelligent design process, to reflect the need for smart and sustainable design solutions in the complex high-tech Era. Equipped with computers and internet resources, students are allowed instant access to infinite repositories of visual material and ready-for-digital-recycling creative solutions. This may accelerate …

"Nobody Wants To Eat Them Alive:” Ethical Dilemmas And Dual Media Narratives On Domestic Rabbits As Pets And Commodity, Gayane F. Torosyan, Brian Lowe Oct 2013

"Nobody Wants To Eat Them Alive:” Ethical Dilemmas And Dual Media Narratives On Domestic Rabbits As Pets And Commodity, Gayane F. Torosyan, Brian Lowe

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Using semiotic analysis, this study explores changes occurring in the societal perception of rabbits as farm animals as juxtaposed to their increasing popularity as domestic companions. This study is based on a preliminary hypothesis that rabbits are increasingly perceived and portrayed in media as domestic companion animals similar to cats and guinea pigs, which challenges a parallel narrative that views rabbits as commodities for their meat and fur. Operating within a theoretical framework that considers news media as both socially constructed reality and recorded history, the study examines the dynamics of change in numbers of coded news narratives drawn as …

Keynote: The Transmission Of Information: An “Awful Deformation” Of What Communication Really Is – John Shotter, John Shotter

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

It is easy to think of communication as being primarily to do with the transmission of information, with the communication of facts, of intelligence, of things people want to know about—a view given scientific expression long ago by Shannon and Weaver (1949). The taken-for-granted background to this view being the Cartesian assumptions of a mechanical world of separate, identifiable, interacting entities in motion according to discoverable laws. Everything changes, however, once we switch to a view of communication as occurring within a ceaseless, indivisible flow of entwined strands of spontaneously responsive, expressive, living, bodily activity—a view adopted by all those …

Measuring Phonetic Convergence In Speech Production, Jennifer S. Pardo Oct 2013

Measuring Phonetic Convergence In Speech Production, Jennifer S. Pardo

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Phonetic convergence is defined as an increase in the similarity of acoustic-phonetic form between talkers. Previous research has demonstrated phonetic convergence both when a talker listens passively to speech and while talkers engage in social interaction. Much of this research has focused on a diverse array of acoustic-phonetic attributes, with fewer studies incorporating perceptual measures of phonetic convergence. The current paper reviews research on phonetic convergence in both non-interactive and conversational settings, and attempts to consolidate the diverse array of findings by proposing a paradigm that models perceptual and acoustic measures together. By modeling acoustic measures as predictors of perceived …
