Comparison Of Performance On Static And Dynamic Language Tasks Among Typically Developing Preschoolers With Bilingual Experience, Mireya Hernandez
Comparison Of Performance On Static And Dynamic Language Tasks Among Typically Developing Preschoolers With Bilingual Experience, Mireya Hernandez
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of a graduated prompting format for measuring modifiability in a screening context among preschool children with bilingual experience. The dynamic assessment framework, including graduated prompting, is an alternative to traditional, static assessment of language impairment. Performance on four dynamic language tasks by 16 typically developing 4-year-olds with more English than Spanish experience was compared to performance of 16 matched children on static versions of the same tasks. These included novel adjective learning, semantic comparison, phonological awareness, and false-belief theory of mind tasks. When prompted responses were credited, the dynamic group …

English is an important skill in today’s world – in the job market as well as in our worldwide Church. BYU has a unique opportunity to assist many international students, including returned missionaries involved in the Perpetual Education Fund, to learn English through its English Language Center (ELC). This center is limited in the number of students it can reach because of the cost and time involved for teachers to perform tasks such as the grading of essays of lower proficiency students. My project was to work on the development of a computer program that evaluates the essays of non-native …
Similarity And Contiguity Of Form And Meaning: A Paradigm Of Grammatical Gender Change In Romance Languages, Eve A. Ross, Dr. Cynthia L. Hallen
Similarity And Contiguity Of Form And Meaning: A Paradigm Of Grammatical Gender Change In Romance Languages, Eve A. Ross, Dr. Cynthia L. Hallen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Gender in language is currently a hot topic in linguistics and related fields. One somewhat neglected branch of this subject is grammatical gender. Grammatical gender refers to the gender of a word that does not correspond to the gender of the real world object the word represents. Grammatical gender does not exist in English, but it does exist in all of the Romance languages. For example, the French word for “month” is masculine, even though months themselves are not masculine.

Language For Special Purposes At Byu — Business Russian, David V. Shurtleff, Dr. David K. Hart
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Business language courses were taught at American universities as early as the 1920’s but did not gain widespread acceptance until the 1980’s. A major reason for the growth of Language for Special Purposes (LSP) was the report of the President’s Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies, which focused on the decline of language skills in the U.S. and stressed the need for professionally linked foreign language courses. Linguistic skills, the report stated, are a plus when combined with professional knowledge in fields such as engineering and business.1

Self-Efficacy For Metalinguistic Control And Its Relationship To Writing Quality, Michael S. Dempsey
Self-Efficacy For Metalinguistic Control And Its Relationship To Writing Quality, Michael S. Dempsey
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Currently influential models of writing processes, such as Flower and Hayes (1980) and Hayes (1996) do not attend explicitly to metalinguistics—writers’ ability to monitor and control linguistic skills. Dimensions of metalinguistic ability—metaphonology, metasyntax, metasemantics, metapragmatics, and metatext—arguably are central to the writing process and to writers’ success as they compose. The purpose of this study was to discover if a relationship existed between metalinguistic self-efficacy and (1) ratings on essays written by participants and (2) participants’ self-reported average grade on college papers. Essays were rated using two rubrics, one analytic and the other holistic, which were developed from metalinguistic constructs. …

The Lithuanian Language And Conference Translation, Rebecca M. Rosenlund, Dr. Cynthia Hallen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Every six months, millions of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints gather to hear the voice of a living prophet and other leaders and teachers. They look forward to the counsel and insight that they will receive for themselves and their families as they face the challenges of daily life. They rejoice in the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the Lord’s will and of his plan for his children living at this time. The proceedings of the semi-annual conferences are sent via satellite to thousands of stake centers and homes so that members throughout …
The Fate Of Condemned 18th Century Portuguese Loanwords, Aaron Eggleston, Dr. Christopher Lund
The Fate Of Condemned 18th Century Portuguese Loanwords, Aaron Eggleston, Dr. Christopher Lund
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In 1760 a book was published in Lisbon, Portugal entitled Infermidades da lingua, e arte que a ensina a emmudecer para melhorar (Sicknesses of the tongue, and the art that teaches it to be silent for improvement), in which the use of certain words and phrases in the Portuguese language was strongly denounced. In the title of the work in question and throughout the text, the author describes his vast inventory of words and other expressions as “sicknesses” to the Portuguese language that need to be removed. The author’s prescriptive linguistic view is quite interesting and has been in demand …

Teacher, Researcher, And Accountability Discourses: Creating Space For Democratic Science Teaching Practices In Middle Schools, Cory A. Buxton, Shakhnoza Kayumova, Martha Allexsaht-Snider
Democracy & Education
This study explores the role of competing discourses that shape current practices in U.S. schools and how professional development efforts can support teachers and researchers in finding ways to reinsert more democratic processes into their collaborative work. We examine the case of one research and professional development project with the goal of supporting middle school science and ESOL teachers in fostering more meaningful science learning for all their students but especially their English language learners. Using Gee’s notion of big-D discourses and Fairclough’s notion of interdiscursivity, we trace how the Discourse of accountability, the Discourse of science teaching, and the …
Rotational Geometry As A Teaching Tool: Applying The Work Of Giorgio Scarpa, Pino Trogu
Rotational Geometry As A Teaching Tool: Applying The Work Of Giorgio Scarpa, Pino Trogu
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper focuses on a teaching unit in drawing for design that uses and applies Giorgio Scarpa’s principles and methods in rotational geometry, as put forth in his book Modelli di Geometria Rotatoria, (Models of rotational geometry, 1978), and tests their validity through the construction of physical models built by the students. These models are derived from the sectioning of regular polyhedra such as the cube. The resulting modules can be re-configured into closed or open “chains” capable of folding back into their original minimal volume. This process has parallels in geometric folding, such as in linkages, origami, and polyhedra …

Old Cortex, New Contexts: Re-Purposing Spatial Perception For Social Cognition, Carolyn Parkinson, Thalia Wheatley
Old Cortex, New Contexts: Re-Purposing Spatial Perception For Social Cognition, Carolyn Parkinson, Thalia Wheatley
Dartmouth Scholarship
Much of everyday mental life involves information that we cannot currently perceive directly, from contemplating the strengths of friendships to reasoning about the contents of other minds. Despite their primacy to everyday human functioning, and in particular, to human sociality, the mechanisms that support abstract thought are poorly understood. An explanatory framework that has gained traction recently in cognitive neuroscience is exaptation, or the re-purposing of evolutionarily old circuitry to carry out new functions. We argue for the utility of applying this concept to social cognition. Convergent behavioral and neuroscientific evidence suggests that humans co-opt mechanisms originally devoted to spatial …

(i) Which species dominate mid-successional old-fields in Hungary? How does the identity of these species relate to local (patch-scale) diversity and to the progress of succession? (ii) Which species have the strongest negative impact on diversity in spontaneous old-field succession and what generalizations are possible about traits of these species? (iii) Are these species dominant or subordinate components in mature target communities? (iv) Do native or alien species have stronger effects on the diversity and progress of succession?

A Tool Also For Linguists: A Review Of Paul Sullivan’S Qualitative Data Analysis Using A Dialogical Approach, Grandon Goertz
A Tool Also For Linguists: A Review Of Paul Sullivan’S Qualitative Data Analysis Using A Dialogical Approach, Grandon Goertz
The Qualitative Report
Paul Sullivan (2013) introduces a method of speech analysis that uses a dialogical approach, which is distinguished from critical discourse analysis, phenomenological analysis, and grounded theory by its hermeneutic of trust. In this approach, data is analyzed using a pairing of bureaucratic and theoretical methods that indicates in the speech where the key moments are and where intonation expresses meaning. In the evaluation process subjectivity is defined and described. The types of data that would be especially suited to this approach include interviews, focus group speech, and conversation. This dialogic approach also has applications in the field of linguistics

The Therapeutic Interview Process In Qualitative Research Studies, Judith A. Nelson, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie, Lisa A. Wines, Rebecca K. Frels
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this paper is to describe the systemic strategies used in marriage and family therapy relevant to interviews, via what we call the therapeutic interview process, that expand the meaning of a research study for both the counselor researcher and the participant(s). We outline the therapeutic interview process for conducting transformative - based interviews via similar strategies from a family systems perspective conceptualized by Charlés (2007). The central core of the interview process is the therapeutic conversation itself that involves the systemic whole. This therapeutic conversation is facilitated by debriefing interviews, whereby the counselor researcher is interviewed to …

On The Electrodynamics Of Neural Networks, Pb Graben, S Rodrigues
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We present a microscopic approach for the coupling of cortical activity, as resulting from proper dipole currents of pyramidal neurons, to the electromagnetic field in extracellular fluid in presence of diffusion and Ohmic conduction. Starting from a full-fledged three-compartment model of a single pyramidal neuron, including shunting and dendritic propagation, we derive an observation model for dendritic dipole currents in extracellular space and thereby for the dendritic field potential that contributes to the local field potential of a neural population. Under reasonable simplifications, we then derive a leaky integrate-and-fire model for the dynamics of a neural network, which facilitates comparison …

The development of solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) by Steve de Shazer and coworkers was a paradigmatic 180 degree shift from the problem-focused therapy that was based initially on the medical model. Yet, even with SFBT the work is still about the “problems” that the clients present.
