Interactive Concept Acquisition For Embodied Artificial Agents, Joachim De Greeff
Interactive Concept Acquisition For Embodied Artificial Agents, Joachim De Greeff
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
An important capacity that is still lacking in intelligent systems such as robots, is the ability to use concepts in a human-like manner. Indeed, the use of concepts has been recognised as being fundamental to a wide range of cognitive skills, including classification, reasoning and memory. Intricately intertwined with language, concepts are at the core of human cognition; but despite a large body or research, their functioning is as of yet not well understood. Nevertheless it remains clear that if intelligent systems are to achieve a level of cognition comparable to humans, they will have to posses the ability to …

Purpose: In this study, the authors examined the validity of using materials from 2 nonregional yet mutually intelligible dialects to evaluate an individual’s speech recognition threshold (SRT) and word recognition (WR) abilities and whether a speaker of 1 dialect could accurately administer and score materials in the other dialect. Method: Previously created SRT and WR materials were presented to 32 Mandarin listeners with normal hearing:16 speakers of Mainland Mandarin and 16 speakers of Taiwan Mandarin. Hearing abilities were examined using SRT and WR materials created for speakers from 2 different regional dialects. Presentation of the materials occur red during 2 …
E-Society And Children's Participation: Risks, Opportunities And Barriers, Brian O'Neill
E-Society And Children's Participation: Risks, Opportunities And Barriers, Brian O'Neill
Books/Book chapters
Children are important subjects of information society policy, particularly in the context of digital learning opportunities and e-inclusion. However, their participation is also a cause of concern and anxiety for policy makers. With ever-earlier adoption of new internet technologies and services by children, concerns arise as to how to ensure adequate protection whilst seeking to encourage and foster online opportunities. A delicate balancing act is required to manage risks while promoting better participation in e-society. To better inform this policy field, EU Kids Online conducted a pan-European survey of children’s use of the internet, resulting in the first fully comparable …

The Evaluation Of A Biometric-Based Identification System For Remote-Based Exam Invigilation, Nathan Clarke, Paul Dowland, Steve Furnell
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
To critically evaluate the technology options available for a continuous biometric-based identification system. To design and implement a continuous biometric-based identification system for use within e-learning. The prototype will be independent but built around the University’s current Perception system in the first instance. To evaluate the operational characteristics of the system and the human-factors of acceptance, usability and privacy, and disseminate the system across the University. To investigate the pedagogical factors underpinning this new area of e-assessment. Prior research has raised concerns regarding information security in e-learning systems for over a decade now (Littman, 1998). However, in reality much more …

A Semantic Web Based Search Engine With X3d Visualisation Of Queries And Results, Konstantinos Gkoutzis
A Semantic Web Based Search Engine With X3d Visualisation Of Queries And Results, Konstantinos Gkoutzis
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The Semantic Web project has introduced new techniques for managing information. Data can now be organised more efficiently and in such a way that computers can take advantage of the relationships that characterise the given input to present more relevant output. Semantic Web based search engines can quickly educe exactly what is needed to be found and retrieve it while avoiding information overload. Up until now, search engines have interacted with their users by asking them to look for words and phrases. We propose the creation of a new generation Semantic Web search engine that will offer a visual interface …

Manual Evaluation Of Synthesised Sign Language Avatars, Robert G. Smith Mr, Brian Nolan Dr.
Conference Papers
The evaluation discussed in this paper explores the role that underlying facial expressions might have regarding understandability in sign language avatars. Focusing specifically on Irish Sign Language (ISL), we examine the Deaf community’s appetite for sign language avatars. The work presented explores the following hypothesis: Augmenting an existing avatar with various combinations of the 7 widely accepted universal emotions identified by Ekman [1] to achieve underlying facial expressions, will make that avatar more human-like and consequently improve usability and understandability for the ISL user. Using human evaluation methods [2] we compare an augmented set of avatar utterances against a baseline …
Composers In The Community, Anne-Marie O'Farrell, Lorraine O'Connell
Composers In The Community, Anne-Marie O'Farrell, Lorraine O'Connell
Teaching Fellowships
Today’s ever-changing contexts of music and music education demand that composers are increasingly required to be an artistic voice for the communities in which they live and work. Yet much teaching of composing in third-level institutions in Ireland, while developing a high level of musical craftsmanship, often fail to promote the vital connection between those skills and the social and civic contexts in which many composers work. The aim of this project was to enhance the learning experience of students in the Conservatory of Music and Drama by giving them the opportunity to apply, adapt, and transfer their musical knowledge …
Accuracy And Timeliness In Ml Based Activity Recognition, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher
Accuracy And Timeliness In Ml Based Activity Recognition, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
While recent Machine Learning (ML) based techniques for activity recognition show great promise, there remain a number of questions with respect to the relative merits of these techniques. To provide a better understanding of the relative strengths of contemporary Activity Recognition methods, in this paper we present a comparative analysis of Hidden Markov Model, Bayesian, and Support Vector Machine based human activity recognition models. The study builds on both pre-existing and newly annotated data which includes interleaved activities. Results demonstrate that while Support Vector Machine based techniques perform well for all data sets considered, simple representations of sensor histories regularly …

A Comparative Study Of The Effect Of Sensor Noise On Activity Recognition Models, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
To provide a better understanding of the relative strengths of Machine Learning based Activity Recognition methods, in this paper we present a comparative analysis of the robustness of three popular methods with respect to sensor noise. Specifically we evaluate the robustness of Naive Bayes classifier, Support Vector Machine, and Random Forest based activity recognition models in three cases which span sensor errors from dead to poorly calibrated sensors. Test data is partially synthesized from a recently annotated activity recognition corpus which includes both interleaved activities and a range of both temporally long and short activities. Results demonstrate that the relative …

Language As A Social Reality: The Effects Of The Infantilization Of Women, Chelsae R. Huot
Language As A Social Reality: The Effects Of The Infantilization Of Women, Chelsae R. Huot
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The current study examined how people’s perceptions can be affected by various terms used to describe women. Participants from a Midwestern university read a script describing 26-year-old Erin either as a “woman,” a “girl,” or “person.” Participants then rated Erin on eighteen different traits (e.g., mature, forceful). They also completed an ambivalent sexism scale and answered three questions about their use and interpretations of the terms “girl” and “woman.” It was predicted that the participants in the “woman” condition would rate Erin as more mature, responsible, warm, understanding, and successful than the participants in the “girl” condition. Also, it was …

Translated Literature In Your Library: The Mildred L Batchelder Award, Kasey L. Garrison, Danielle E. Forest, Sue C. Kimmel
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Translated books represent a unique bridge between cultures for young readers. This article discusses recent trends and practical applications for award-winning literature that has been translated into English and published in the United States. Winner and honour titles earning the Mildred L Batchelder Award for their publishers often include European languages of origins and settings. Despite this homogeneity, the books represent a quality option as a way to diversify a library collection for English-speaking patrons, particularly young adults, and to enhance teaching lessons with the integration of this global literature.

This study empirically tests the proposition that law students adopt different conceptions of the judge’s role in adjudication based on whether they first study intentional torts, negligence, or strict liability. The authors conducted an anonymous survey of more than 450 students enrolled in eight law schools at the beginning, mid-point, and end of the first semester of law school. The students were prompted to indicate to what extent they believed the judge’s role to be one of rule application and, conversely, to what extent it was one of considering social, economic, and ideological factors. The survey found that while all …
Cultural Policy And The Creative City: Legitimation Discourses, Culture And The State, Tara Byrne
Cultural Policy And The Creative City: Legitimation Discourses, Culture And The State, Tara Byrne
Doctoral
This thesis addresses cultural policy. It proposes that the creative city urban development paradigm is a useful perspective from which cultural policy can be analysed in order to reveal the imperatives, pressures, contingencies and deficits within it and the state, vis-à-vis the market. The thesis, therefore, rests on three analytical pillars: the general field of cultural policy, the specific construct of the creative city paradigm, and an investigation of relations between these domains through a study of policy texts in Scotland, Finland and Ireland. Using Michel Foucault’s discourse formation theory and Jurgen Habermas’s concepts of lifeworld, system, legitimation and colonisation, …
Understanding Presence, Affordance And The Time/Space Dimensions For Language Learning In Virtual Worlds, Susanna Nocchi, Françoise Blin
Understanding Presence, Affordance And The Time/Space Dimensions For Language Learning In Virtual Worlds, Susanna Nocchi, Françoise Blin
Articles
Notwithstanding their potential for novel approaches to language teaching and learning, Virtual Worlds (VWs) present numerous technological and pedagogical challenges that require new paradigms if the language learning experience and outcomes are to be successful. In this presentation, we argue that the notions of presence and affordance, together with the time/space dimensions of interactions in virtual worlds (e.g. Bakhtin’s (1981) chronotope, Foucault’s (1984) heteropia, and Lemke’s (2000) heterochrony), provide new insights into language learners’ trajectories as they attempt to carry out tasks that are designed to make use of virtual worlds’ characteristics and potentialities. We explore and analyse a critical …

Comparing Sixth Grade Students' Creativity In Word Play To Spatial Construction With Integrated Academic Content Eliciting A Distal Or Proximal Perspective, Ksenia S. Zhbanova
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Pressing global problems require solutions from innovative ideas that depend upon educating a new generation to think creatively. The current study aimed at assisting 24 sixth grade students in a summer program develop their creativity skills in two different areas while integrating academic content. Student performance was examined for transfer of skills across domains and for support of Construal Level Theory, which holds that addressing topics distant in space, time, probability or experience leads to abstract thought supporting greater creativity.
The study was a counterbalanced, repeated measures, two-experimental condition study with students divided into two groups of 12 each. In …
The Transience Of The Interior Self: Exploring The Lost Real Within A Creative Visual Praxis, Jacqueline Monks
The Transience Of The Interior Self: Exploring The Lost Real Within A Creative Visual Praxis, Jacqueline Monks
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This research investigates psychological ideas of the interior self as transient and its relationship to the Real within a creative practice that includes video, projection and animation. The significance of the research is in the critical development of my creative practice and its creative outcome as a means of visually manifesting ideas of the interior self as explored by the theorist Slavoj Zizek. Theoretically, the notion of the interior self is defined as a transient state of co-existing contradictions. Its definition is located in Zizek’s reading of Jacques Lacan’ s triad of orders that comprise the thinking self (Zizek, 2007a, …

Countering-Insurgency : A Comparative Analysis Of Campaigns In Malaya (1948-1960), Kenya (1952-1960) And Rhodesia (1964-1980), William J. Bailey
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
History has lessons for the present; could this be the case for modern counterinsurgency operations in countries resembling Iraq and Afghanistan? This research set out to study three historical counter-insurgencies campaigns in, Malaya (1947-1960), Kenya (1952- 1960) and Rhodesia (1964-1980), with a view to establishing whether or not the Colonial authorities had a substantial advantage over modern forces when combating insurgencies. If this was the case, are these advantages transferable to aid forces involved in modern counterinsurgencies?
The research questions focussed on how important the role of the Colonial Forces was to the eventual outcome, examining the principal factors that …

A Review Of The Policy Development Processes That Relate To The Inclusion Of People With A Disability In Sport : Some Western Australian Evidence, Helen Cunningham
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In the late 1960s, there was a major change in social policy and legislation in developed countries that improved the rights and opportunities for people with a disability in all aspects of society, including sport. In 1992, in concert with the general acceptance of the social model of disability, Australia enacted legislation making it illegal to discriminate against a person with a disability; this encouraged their inclusion into the community (Australian Sports Commission, 2005; Doll-Tepper, 1999; Thomas & Smith, 2009).
In order to meet the obligations of anti-discrimination legislation, Australian sport organisations became active in preparing policy frameworks to guide …

The Effect Of Background Music On Emotional Processing : Evaluation Using A Dot Probe Paradigm, Haans Drieberg
The Effect Of Background Music On Emotional Processing : Evaluation Using A Dot Probe Paradigm, Haans Drieberg
Theses : Honours
Music plays an important role in all of the world's cultures, and background music is an ever-present phenomenon. Despite this, few studies have formally addressed whether background music influences the way people think. The aim of this study was to discover whether the presence of background music can influence cognition. Specifically, the differential effects of music rated as being positive (inducing happy emotions) and negative (inducing anxiety) on a person's allocation of attention was investigated. A dot probe task with positive and negative word pairings, matched for length and frequency was used in order to test the hypotheses that the …

The Use Of The Communication Checklist - Adult (Cc-A) For Assessing The Communication Abilities Of Individuals Post Traumatic Brain Injury, David B. Fitzgerald
The Use Of The Communication Checklist - Adult (Cc-A) For Assessing The Communication Abilities Of Individuals Post Traumatic Brain Injury, David B. Fitzgerald
Theses : Honours
Background and aims: Standardised and non-standardised assessments are used in speech pathology to evaluate an individual’s communication abilities post traumatic brain injury (TBI; e.g. Turkstra et al., 2005b). However, valid, reliable and norm-referenced standardised assessments that examine functional communication abilities of individuals post TBI outside of the clinical environment are limited. This study sought to investigate the validity of the Communication Checklist - Adults (CC-A; Whitehouse & Bishop, 2009), a caregiver questionnaire that assesses the communication abilities of individuals post TBI.
Method: The project recruited 14 participants post TBI with varying communicative impairment severities. Each participant completed a routine communication …

A Transcultural Journey : Integrating Elements Of Persian Classical Music With Jazz, Kate Pass
Theses : Honours
This study centres on the integration of Jazz with Persian classical music. In particular it documents the processes and the outcomes of a musical collaboration between myself—an Australian jazz double bass player—and a group of classically trained Persian musicians.
The study is in three parts. Part one serves as a backdrop to parts two and three and explores notable examples of collaborations between jazz musicians and musicians from other cultures. Part two provides a succinct exposition of the main features of Persian music, and part three documents my work in integrating Persian classical music with Jazz.

Big Data In Small Hands, Woodrow Hartzog, Evan Selinger
Big Data In Small Hands, Woodrow Hartzog, Evan Selinger
Faculty Scholarship
"Big data" can be defined as a problem-solving philosophy that leverages massive data-sets and algorithmic analysis to extract "hidden information and surprising correlations." Not only does big data pose a threat to traditional notions of privacy, but it also compromises socially shared information. This point remains under appreciated because our so-called public disclosures are not nearly as public as courts and policymakers have argued — at least, not yet. That is subject to change once big data becomes user friendly.
Most social disclosures and details of our everyday lives are meant to be known only to a select group of …
