Sound Bites -2, Steve Kahan

Word Ways

The tumultuous world we live in has given new meaning (and well-deserved esteem) to the title of 'first responder". Now is your opportunity to join this elite group and assume the mantle in a figurative sense by completing the word rebus that awaits you.

Aeiou Time Three Delicacies, Darryl Francis Nov 2013

Aeiou Time Three Delicacies, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

While browsing through some back issues of Word Ways, I noticed in the November 2000 Kickshaws that Dave Morice and Eric Chaikin presented a number of "double pair supervocalics", words and terms which use exactly two each of the vowels AEIOU. At the end of the Kickshaws item, they wondered "dare we dream of a decadent feast of AEIOU-times-three-delicacies?", and offered a pair of number name examples: FOUR MILLION SIX HUNDRED AND TEN THOUSAND AND TEN and QUATTUORDECILLION FIVE THOUSAND AND TEN. However, both of these are inconsistent in their use of the word AND.

Simile For The Camera!, Daniel Galef Nov 2013

Simile For The Camera!, Daniel Galef

Word Ways

Similes have a tendency to become entrenched in the language. Though they may originally be an expression of originality, a creative link between two ideas never before formed, they soon are overused and undervalued figures of speech not given a second thought by users, addicted to similes in the way that other users are addicted to methamphetamine. Because a simile has a set meaning belied by its expression, it refers only to one meaning or sense of its base word, like any unambiguous phrase.

Dvorak Typewriter Words, Tristan Miller Nov 2013

Dvorak Typewriter Words, Tristan Miller

Word Ways

In the November 1999 Word Ways Mike eith explored the subject of wordplay based on the typewriter keyboard - that is, words which can be typed with certain well-defined restrictions, such as using only one keyboard row, or alternating hands for each successive letter. Keith's findings were based on QWERTY, the most common keyboard layout in the English-speaking world. In this article we improve upon some of Keith's QWERTY records and repeat most of his original challenges with another popular English Keyboard layout, the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard.

More than 90% of the elements of the periodic table consist of consonants which, rearranged with the appropriate vowels, may produce new (and occasionally apposite) words. Here are some that I found.

Generic Alternades, Susan Thorpe Nov 2013

Generic Alternades, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

in Language on Vacation, Dmitri Borgmann defined an alternade as a word in which every other letter, beginning with the first letter, make another word; every other letter, beginning with the second letter, also make a word.

Long Words In German And Other Languages, Solomon Golomb Nov 2013

Long Words In German And Other Languages, Solomon Golomb

Word Ways

The German language routinely forms very long words by incorporating (sometimes) long adjectival phrases and the nouns they modify into a single word. And such words find their way into everyday use.

Us State Nicknames, Slogans & License Plate Legends, Darryl Francis Nov 2013

Us State Nicknames, Slogans & License Plate Legends, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

Over the years, Word Ways has offered transposals of the names of the US state names and state capitols, well as transdeletions and transadditions. But in this article, I look at transposals of state nicknames (both current and no longer in use), state slogans (used for promoting tourism, past and present), as well some of the legends that appear on vehicle license plates from different states.

Overlapping Names, A. Ross Eckler Nov 2013

Overlapping Names, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

Recently Ray Love pointed out an unusual feature of his full name: it can be written out as one continuous word, as RaymonDaneiLove. He writes "No one I know has a name that does this...perhaps one name in a thousand or ten thousand has this rare characteristic...is this something that can be quantified?"

Wallace And Incipient Structures: A World Of "More Recondite" Influences, Charles H. Smith Nov 2013

Wallace And Incipient Structures: A World Of "More Recondite" Influences, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

Alfred Russel Wallace is well-known for his co-discovery of the principle of natural selection. Natural selection is usually considered a process, but it is not clear that Wallace regarded it in exactly these terms. In fact he more likely thought of the relationships involved as representing what we would now term a “state space,” a negative feedback loop wherein populations are maintained at healthy levels through elimination of the unfit. Both before and after the advent of natural selection Wallace clung to the idea that “more recondite forces” were shaping the nature and direction of evolution; this is especially evident …

Cross Border Community Research, Opportunities And Challenges: Case Study Analyses, Paulette Meikle, Stephen A. King Nov 2013

Cross Border Community Research, Opportunities And Challenges: Case Study Analyses, Paulette Meikle, Stephen A. King

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

In the context of a global knowledge economy, this paper underscores the need for cross border social and community research and suggests several critical procedures necessary for successful implementation of such research projects. Using data derived from diverse sources it describes the importance of cross border knowledge sharing, and critical procedures that enlarge the perimeter of traditional teaching and learning experiences. It further describes the advantages of implementing a combination of in-class instruction and field-based activities in international settings. A discussion of the constraints and benefits of conducting social and community-based fieldwork in politically stable developing countries follows.

Discrimination Of Familiar Human Faces In Dogs (Canis Familiaris), Ludwig Huber, Anaïs Racca, Billy Scaf, Zsófia Virányi, Friederike Range Nov 2013

Discrimination Of Familiar Human Faces In Dogs (Canis Familiaris), Ludwig Huber, Anaïs Racca, Billy Scaf, Zsófia Virányi, Friederike Range

Recognition Collection

Faces are an important visual category for many taxa, and the human face is no exception to this. Because faces differ in subtle ways and possess many idiosyncratic features, they provide a rich source of perceptual cues. A fair amount of those cues are learned through social interactions and are used for future identification of individual humans. These effects of individual experience can be studied particularly well in hetero-specific face perception. Domestic dogs represent a perfect model in this respect, due to their proved ability to extract important information from the human face in socio-communicative interactions. There is also …

Teachers' Perception Of The English Language Curriculum In Libyan Public Schools: An Investigation And Assessment Of Implementation Process Of English Curriculum In Libyan Public High Schools, Salem Altaieb Nov 2013

Teachers' Perception Of The English Language Curriculum In Libyan Public Schools: An Investigation And Assessment Of Implementation Process Of English Curriculum In Libyan Public High Schools, Salem Altaieb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the advent of globalization and technological development, English has become a necessary tool of international communication in many areas such as education, business, politics, commerce, science, and technology throughout the world. Also, English has become the most widely taught foreign language in the world (Kachru &Nelson, 1996). Moreover, the issue of successful implementation of the English language curriculum has been the focus of a number of studies. In the case of Libya, however, little research has been conducted on teachers' perceptions of the new English language curriculum in Libyan high schools. Thus, teachers' voices have not been examined or …

Alliances And Preferences: Party System Institutionalization's Potentially Intervening Role On Pre-Election Cooperation In Australia, Fiji, And Papua New Guinea, Lee T. Barrow Nov 2013

Alliances And Preferences: Party System Institutionalization's Potentially Intervening Role On Pre-Election Cooperation In Australia, Fiji, And Papua New Guinea, Lee T. Barrow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research project examines the intervening role of party system institutionalization in determining the effect of electoral rules on the behavior of political parties. Highly institutionalized systems differ across multiple dimensions--supply stability, volatility of results, and rootedness of parties--from fluid systems. Party behavior can be depicted rationally as a response to both institutional incentives and the historical and sociological context of a nation's party system. Electoral incentives promoting certain types of party behavior can be negated by party system mechanics that deter those behaviors. The research uses a medium-N structured, focused comparison of elections from Australia, Fiji, and Papua New …

Counteracting Dynamics Of Violent Communication In Bullying, Jacques L. Koko Nov 2013

Counteracting Dynamics Of Violent Communication In Bullying, Jacques L. Koko

Peace and Conflict Studies

This study examines fourteen conversations from observations conducted on bullying among 8th graders in 2002, in a Middle School in Virginia in the United States of America to: (1) identify power disparity in verbal bullying between bullies and targets, (2) examine how power disparity in verbal bullying empowers the perpetrator against silent targets, (3) explain how targets’ verbal responses neutralize bullies or stop bullying, and (4) design an approach to counteracting verbal bullying –the “agere contra” approach to bullying, which demonstrates how words could also be used, not only to counteract bullying, but also to heal both the perpetrator and …

Linguafolio Goal Setting Intervention And Academic Achievement: Increasing Student Capacity For Self-Regulated Learning, Oxana D. Clarke Nov 2013

Linguafolio Goal Setting Intervention And Academic Achievement: Increasing Student Capacity For Self-Regulated Learning, Oxana D. Clarke

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

In the last few decades there has been a shift from thinking less about teaching and more about learning. Such a paradigm shift from teacher-centered to student-centered instruction requires students to think about their own learning and to monitor their own learning development and language achievement. Researchers have identified goal setting and self-regulated learning as crucial factors that affect academic achievement. Goal setting improves student performance and enhances achievement by allocating attention, activating effort, increasing persistence and motivation which in turn leads to the development of self-regulation skills. With this belief, LinguaFolio was integrated into foreign language classrooms to support …

Juvenile Lifers And Judicial Overrreach: A Curmedgeonly Meditation On Miller V. Alabama, Frank O. Bowman Iii Nov 2013

Juvenile Lifers And Judicial Overrreach: A Curmedgeonly Meditation On Miller V. Alabama, Frank O. Bowman Iii

Missouri Law Review

This Article focuses very little on the implications of Miller and Graham for the population they most directly affect – juvenile offenders previously eligible for sentences of life without parole – and more on the implications of the Court’s reasoning in Miller and Graham for sentencing generally. However gratifying the results of Miller and Graham may be as sentencing policy, they are troubling as a constitutional matter both because they are badly theorized and because they are two strands of a web of decisions in which the Court has consistently used doubtful constitutional interpretations to transfer power over criminal justice …

Originalism: A Critical Introduction, Keith E. Whittington Nov 2013

Originalism: A Critical Introduction, Keith E. Whittington

Fordham Law Review

The theory of originalism is now well into its second wave. Originalism first came to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s as conservative critics reacted to the decisions of the Warren Court, and the Reagan Administration embraced originalism as a check on judicial activism. A second wave of originalism has emerged since the late 1990s, responding to earlier criticisms and reconsidering earlier assumptions and conclusions. This Article assesses where originalist theory currently stands. It outlines the points of agreement and disagreement within the recent originalist literature and highlights the primary areas of continuing separation between originalists and their critics.

The Gravitational Force Of Originalism, Randy E. Barnett Nov 2013

The Gravitational Force Of Originalism, Randy E. Barnett

Fordham Law Review

In Part I of this Article, I describe four aspects of the New Originalism: First, New Originalism is about identifying the original public meaning of the Constitution rather than the original Framers’ intent. Second, the interpretive activity of identifying the original public meaning of the text is a purely descriptive empirical inquiry. Third, there is also a normative tenet of the New Originalism that contends that the original public meaning of the text should be followed. Finally, distinguishing between the activities of interpretation and construction identifies the limit of the New Originalism, which is only a theory of interpretation. In …
