2010 British General Election Leader Evaluations: Replicating Electoral Focus Group Research, Kristi Winters, Edzia Carvalho
2010 British General Election Leader Evaluations: Replicating Electoral Focus Group Research, Kristi Winters, Edzia Carvalho
The Qualitative Report
This research replicates and expands upon the qualitative electoral research of Winters and Campbell by using data from focus groups conducted in Essex, England to coincide with three leadership debates during the 2010 British general election. The Qualitative Election Study of Britain (QES Britain) broadly replicated Winters and Campbell’s research design but includes innovations in data collection to more accurately capture assessments. This innovation means the data coding are based entirely on the evaluations of the participants. In our analysis we innovate in the way we display each leader’s unique evaluation structure. To capture the salience and direction of leadership …

Identifying With The Help: An Examination Of Class, Ethnicity And Gender On A Post-Colonial French Houselot, Erin Nicole Whitson
Identifying With The Help: An Examination Of Class, Ethnicity And Gender On A Post-Colonial French Houselot, Erin Nicole Whitson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to attempt to analyze and interpret an outbuilding located in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, a town established by French settlers in the 1780s. First the functional activities associated with the outbuilding will be determined and examined to best understand where and how the structure fit within the larger property. The activities taking place within/outside the outbuilding--especially those linked to domestic chores--will theoretically paint a clearer picture of who was living and/or working within the structure and who was not. Since little work has been done within the French Mississippi River valley on outbuildings in general, …

Fausto Di Florestano - The Genesis Of New Architectural Forms In Albania, Armand Vokshi, Florian Nepravishta
UBT International Conference
This research on the Florestano Di Faustos architecture seek to highlight the evident facts which are fairly present in the context of Albanian cities, but little-known in the academic and professional field . Di Fausto, the Italian architect who worked on the second regulatory plan of Tirana, designed personally also the new core of the Albanian capital, Skanderbeg Square altogether with the ensemble of ministries and the administrative buildings. The materials found in various archives in Italy and Albania reflects clearly the high capacity of architect’s creativity, who worked at the same time for the construction of the city where …

Symbolism And Poetics Of Autogenic Space And Structures – The New Design Approach On Mosque As Representative Building (Design Proposal For The Central Mosque Of Prishtina As Case Study), Banush Shyqeriu, Kushtrim Hajdari
UBT International Conference
The congregation Mosque, Masjid (from Arabic, sujúd = prostration to God) is one of the most important institutions of Muslim world, also the predominant built form of Muslim architecture. Having a basic spatial configuration to create “shelter” for prayer, it is evoking how the simple space bears meaning that generates symbolism. This paper tries to de-construct and re-construct the Mosque as a representative built form. By using our Design Proposal for the Central Mosque of Prishtina as Case Study, we emphasize an “organic” approach towards Mosque design through a methodology of integral contextualization and conception as the new “typology”, by …

The volumes will thus appeal to scholars in a variety …
Broadening What We Perceive: A Method For Analyzing Gesture And Language, Caro C. Williams-Pierce
Broadening What We Perceive: A Method For Analyzing Gesture And Language, Caro C. Williams-Pierce
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship
Gesture and language are deeply intertwined, and attending to both simultaneously when examining mathematical processes is a complex yet rewarding task. We share our budding research methodology for analyzing gesture and language and discuss the methodology from a generic perspective that can be easily adapted to different contexts, participants, and mathematical domains. We further share our problem-specific gesture coding scheme as an example of the grain size and foci of such schemes. Finally, we close by discussing the importance of gesture and language to understanding mathematical justifications and proofs.

A Topic Detection Approach Through Hierarchical Clustering On Concept Graph, Xiaohui Huang, Xiaofeng Zhang, Yunming Ye, Shengchun Deng, Xutao Li
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Topic detection and tracking (TDT) algorithms have long been developed for the discovery of topics. However, most existing TDT algorithms suffer from paying less attention to: (1) temporal distance between a pair of topics; (2) the mutual effect between highly correlated topic terms. In this paper, we proposed a novel topic detection approach by applying hierarchical clustering on the constructed concept graph (HCCG), which is able to solve aforementioned shortcomings simultaneously. In this approach, the concept is first defined as well as the concept behavior curve. Then, the temporal graph is constructed with concept as vertexes and connected by the …

A Satisfaction Evaluation Method For Scenic Spot Based On Linguistic Weighted Arithmetic Average Operator, Mingming Hu, Peiyu Ren, Maozhu Jin, Jibin Lan, Yuyan Luo
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Based on the level empowerment system and the linguistic operator, a satisfaction evaluation process is proposed in this paper. First of all, a level empowerment system is established to generate the weight of each surveyed tourist. Then, some new linguistic operations are defined which can remedy the defects of the existed operations. Besides, the expectation and variance in linguistic information environment are defined to generate the weight of each character of tourist and the weights of indicators, and linguistic weighted arithmetic average (LWAA) operator is introduced to aggregate the linguistic information of each tourist and the group linguistic information of …

Word Ways
in past Word Ways articles, I've differentiated between true mixed metaphors, which combine incongruous, absurd, or unreal images ("it's the whole kettle of fish in a nutshell") and what I call mashed metaphors -where clashing tropes and cliches aren't contradictory or impossible, but nevertheless create an awkward and ludicrous effect because of their proximity ("Investors smelling trouble can vote with their feet").
