Religious Interfaith Work In Canada And South Africa With Particular Focus On The Drafting Of A South African Charter Of Religious Rights And Freedoms, I Benson Jan 2013

Religious Interfaith Work In Canada And South Africa With Particular Focus On The Drafting Of A South African Charter Of Religious Rights And Freedoms, I Benson

Law Papers and Journal Articles

Constitutional protections for religious freedom (and related freedoms of conscience, belief and association and equality), once interpreted by courts and tribunals, apply in a precedential manner to future cases. They have an influence well beyond the particular community to which they first applied. For this reason, religious communities have increasingly banded together and sought to intervene or even, on occasion, to initiate legal actions asserting or defending their rights. This article reviews some of the principles around the freedom of religion as understood in South Africa and Canada to show how courts have understood the freedom of religion in its …

Introduction, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2013

Introduction, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In the spring or early summer of 1820, “some few days” after his epochal vision of the Father and the Son, the young Joseph Smith gave an account of the experience to a Methodist minister with whom he “happened to be in company.” The minister had been active in the “excitement” about religion that inspired Joseph’s fateful decision to go alone into the woods near his house to pray. Naïvely, the boy expected his story of a Bible-like divine manifestation to be well received. It was not.

A Fuzzy Logic Approach To Collision Avoidance In Smart Uavs, Michelle Hromatka Jan 2013

A Fuzzy Logic Approach To Collision Avoidance In Smart Uavs, Michelle Hromatka

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

In recent years, there has been a rise in attention given to the issue of collision avoidance techniques for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Many approaches have been proposed but very few have been tested in high density, fixed speed test conditions. This approach successfully uses fuzzy logic to determine an appropriate avoidance maneuver after a possible collision is detected. Initially, fuzzy logic was also used to detect possible collisions, the reasons this level was removed from the final results are detailed within. This approach was chosen for its adaptability, ease of implementation, and robustness in dealing with questionable sensing techniques. …

Target Language Use And Teaching For Intercultural Competence In Novice Level Spanish Courses: Comparing Practices And Perspectives In High School And University Classrooms, Leah Shepard Jan 2013

Target Language Use And Teaching For Intercultural Competence In Novice Level Spanish Courses: Comparing Practices And Perspectives In High School And University Classrooms, Leah Shepard

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Intercultural competence: We have heard about it, but do language instructors know how to teach it? Is it possible to maintain maximal target language use while doing so? This study investigates the perspectives and practices of intercultural competence and target language use at the novice language levels and also further investigates the connections and differences between high school language settings and university language settings within the implementation of this concept. The 13 participants in the study included a combination of Spanish department faculty at a small liberal arts institution in the Midwest, and alumni that completed the Spanish and teacher …

Don't Toss That Novel! How To Read Benjy’S Bright Shapes In The Sound And The Fury And Rhoda's Watery Words In The Waves, Eleanor Gray Jan 2013

Don't Toss That Novel! How To Read Benjy’S Bright Shapes In The Sound And The Fury And Rhoda's Watery Words In The Waves, Eleanor Gray

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

In their respective novels The Waves and The Sound and the Fury, Virginia Woolf and William Faulkner establish focal points in narration; each author uses narrative strategy to trace characters and voices’ mind processes, languages, and interactions. Each novel reads like a snapshot of these narrated worlds without omniscient authorial guidance, leaving the reader to decipher the language and codes on the page. Accordingly, the barrier these narrative languages face are both within the page and without, as translation requires a committed reader who wants to learn the language, a reader who, even when the voices spiral off the …

Finding Parallels: Some Cautions And Criticisms Part Two, Benjamin A. Mcguire Jan 2013

Finding Parallels: Some Cautions And Criticisms Part Two, Benjamin A. Mcguire

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Discovering parallels is inherently an act of comparison. Through comparison, parallels have been introduced frequently as proof (or evidence) of different issues within Mormon studies. Despite this frequency, very few investigations provide a theoretical or methodological framework by which the parallels themselves can be evaluated. This problem is not new to the field of Mormon studies but has in the past plagued literary studies more generally. In Part One, this review essay discusses present and past approaches dealing with the ways in which parallels have been used and valued in acts of literary comparison, uncovering the various difficulties associated with …

The “Little White Lie:” An Exercise To Explore The Relevance Of Diversity Curriculum, Kristine F. Hoover, Lazarina Topuzova, Heather M. L. Jan 2013

The “Little White Lie:” An Exercise To Explore The Relevance Of Diversity Curriculum, Kristine F. Hoover, Lazarina Topuzova, Heather M. L.

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Compared to the previous decade, fewer incoming college students see racism as a major problem in America (Sax et al. 2001). While there are many complex variables that contribute to persistent racism, we argue that forms of both overt and covert racism are in part perpetuated by our language. This paper offers a concrete example of how educators in business schools in Jesuit institutions of higher education can infuse justice/social responsibility into our curricula (Spitzer 2010). The classroom activity, as described, is designed for a traditional face-to-face undergraduate classroom. Grounded in the principles of Ignatian pedagogy, this exercise provides a …

The Recording And Analysis Of A Vocal Repertoire For The Red Ruffed Lemur, Varecia Rubra, Daphne Hudson Jan 2013

The Recording And Analysis Of A Vocal Repertoire For The Red Ruffed Lemur, Varecia Rubra, Daphne Hudson

Theses & ETDs

The unusual vocalizations of our nonhuman primate relatives have long fascinated anthropologists and primatologists. To understand what these animals communicate, researchers have recorded and played back the calls of many species of primate. In the summer of 2012, I embarked on a five week study of five male captive red ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra) in order to create a behavioral vocal repertoire for this species. During this short study, I recorded 977 vocalizations and grouped over 800 of these into ten definitive categories: the bray, chatter, growl, growl-snort, grunt, mew, pulsed squawk, roar-shriek chorus, sniff, and squeal. A comparison of …

Leaving The Homeland On La Jornada Del Muerto The Archaeology Of Tiffany Pueblo, Evan Giomi Jan 2013

Leaving The Homeland On La Jornada Del Muerto The Archaeology Of Tiffany Pueblo, Evan Giomi

Theses & ETDs

The history of the late pre-contact and early Colonial periods along the lower Rio Grande in New Mexico has been poorly studied archaeologically. Without an indigenous occupation after the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, the region has had little academic attention comparative to the histories of the Pueblos along the middle and northern Rio Grande, many of which maintain an indigenous population into the present. Yet, a descendent population of the Piro people who lived in the lower Rio Grande does exists in the present day, centered mainly in El Paso and Ciudad de Juarez. Following developments in indigenous archaeology in the …

Myth And The German Becoming, Lucas Ballestin Jan 2013

Myth And The German Becoming, Lucas Ballestin

Theses & ETDs

This thesis sketches the developing interest in the role of myths in the construction of a German national identity in the writings of Johann Herder, Johann Fichte, Richard Wagner, and Friedrich Nietzsche. By properly situating these intellectuals in their historical and intellectual context, this thesis examines the way in which the four thinkers refined and mobilized a conception of myth as an essential aspect of the German national identity. Moreover, this thesis explores crucial continuities and recurring themes traversing the work of these four intellectuals, as well as some key differences and breaks. By means of this investigation, this thesis …

Common Fate, Common Future Structural Origins Of The Euro Crisis, Roger Filmyer Jan 2013

Common Fate, Common Future Structural Origins Of The Euro Crisis, Roger Filmyer

Theses & ETDs

This thesis analyzes the Euro Crisis by looking at the institutions of the EU and characteristics of the Eurozone's economy. Chapter 1 looks at Optimal Currency Theory (the theoretical underpinning of the Euro), evaluates the suitability of the Eurozone as an Optimal Currency Area, and discusses Endogenous OCA Theory and Neo-Chartalism as alternative theoretical approaches to currency union. Chapter 2 explores three crises of euro governance: the sudden initial depreciation, the 2003 Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) Crisis, and the failure of the Eurozone banking system in 2009. Additionally, it addresses the worsening environment for European Integration in the wake …

Telling Tales An Examination Of Storytelling In Three North African Francophone Novels, Elizabeth Crowell Jan 2013

Telling Tales An Examination Of Storytelling In Three North African Francophone Novels, Elizabeth Crowell

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the role of storytelling in forming group and individual identities in three North African francophone novels: Latifa Ben Mansour's La Priere de la peur, Yasmine Chami-Kettani's Ceremonie, and Tahar Ben Jelloun's L'Enfant de sable. These novels present several forms of storytelling: stories that unite communities, stories that contradict each other, and stories that are variations of the same story reflecting the storyteller's individuality. The first chapter uses trauma theory to examine La Priere de la peur—specifically, the role storytelling plays for a survivor of a terrorist attack, and the way her stories unite her family even after …

"The Black Hills Are Not For Sale" Environmental Justice In Lakota Country, Olivia Brockmeier Jan 2013

"The Black Hills Are Not For Sale" Environmental Justice In Lakota Country, Olivia Brockmeier

Theses & ETDs

From the beginnings of what has been defined as the Environmental Justice Movement in the United States, public attention has been primarily focused on injustices based on race and class involving exposure to polluted air, water, toxic wastes, and dangerous working conditions. Since the 1800's, the Black Hills have been at the center of a bitter dispute between the United States federal government and Native inhabitants of the region. The history of the Black Hills land dispute is intertwined with a history of land dispossession, marginalization, and discriminatory federal policies. For the Lakota and other Native communities to whom the …

Authority And Authorship The Plight Of The Artist In Vladimir Nabokov's Despair And Invitation To A Beheading, Samantha Hannah Jan 2013

Authority And Authorship The Plight Of The Artist In Vladimir Nabokov's Despair And Invitation To A Beheading, Samantha Hannah

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the role of the artist in Vladimir Nabokov's two novels, Despair and Invitation to a Beheading. In my thesis, I argue that in order for Nabokov's characters to become true artists and free themselves from the novel, they must emancipate themselves from the control of the author and compete with Nabokov for the authorship of their life stories. I specifically examine the two different creative spirits that Nabokov presents in his novels, and how these spirits interact with their external worlds. In Despair, Hermann Karlovich, is a self-proclaimed artistic genius that cannot see the autonomy of others …

Critical Meaning On Collage As A Critical Form Of Creative Expression, Fabienne Elie Jan 2013

Critical Meaning On Collage As A Critical Form Of Creative Expression, Fabienne Elie

Theses & ETDs

Collage in the contemporary art world is often relegated to an experiment in craft rather fine art. With the advent of digital imaging and its consequent effect on the ubiquity of the Image, the potential for the renaissance of Collage as a critical avant-garde form of creative expression has emerged. This project sought to investigate through a historical as well as contemporary lens, the features of Collage that gave it critical dimension. Using prominent works by the theorist R.G. Collingwood, a formal notion of aesthetic expression that took into account both the artist and the spectator is establish. Beginning from …

The Chilam Balam Of Ixil The Contents And Contexts Of A Colonial Maya Manuscript, Gail Fish Jan 2013

The Chilam Balam Of Ixil The Contents And Contexts Of A Colonial Maya Manuscript, Gail Fish

Theses & ETDs

This work is an extended discussion and analysis of the colonial Maya manuscript, the Chilam Balam of Ixil. This manuscript was written in the Yucatec village of Ixil in the late eighteenth century and is a compilation of various sources. Its focus is primarily on astronomy and astrology, both of European and Mesoamerican origin. This research is historically and anthropologically grounded to provide a more holistic view of the work itself. I argue that the Ixil manuscript is analogous to a fixed landscape in which sources from multiple times and places are resituated in a coherent work. This new whole …

Comrade Wolf Knows Whom To Eat Language Policy And Negotiated Boundaries In Regional Russia, Michael Getz Jan 2013

Comrade Wolf Knows Whom To Eat Language Policy And Negotiated Boundaries In Regional Russia, Michael Getz

Theses & ETDs

The dissolution of the USSR created an institutional vacuum in which the Russian Federation was formed. During this process, the ethnically defined republics of the nascent federation lobbied for greater sovereignty, partially on the basis of their national distinctness from the Russian ethnicity. Ethnic elites and political entrepreneurs advocated cultural revival movements as a means of assuring the protection of national identities from the forces of cultural assimilation prevalent in a modernizing society. One element of these efforts is the development of national languages, which can be promoted by implementing language policies that address the use of native languages in …

Touching One Thing Deeply, I Touch Everything, Nicole Cardenas Jan 2013

Touching One Thing Deeply, I Touch Everything, Nicole Cardenas

Theses & ETDs

This is a photographic thesis that developed out of an ISP completed in January 2012. My main interest for this project is in exploring the different ways photographs relate to each other. More specifically, by creating pairs of images or diptychs, I aim to create compositions that will 'open up' for viewers, functioning in a way that proves different than photographs conceived and displayed individually. Additionally, throughout my thesis work I use images of my environment together with images of people in motion to explore the ways movement affects us by stirring memories and stimulating new feelings. I had many …

Gestures Of Solidarity The Deaf Struggle And The Professional Interpreter/Transliterator, Zachary Hudson Jan 2013

Gestures Of Solidarity The Deaf Struggle And The Professional Interpreter/Transliterator, Zachary Hudson

Theses & ETDs

Practitioners have always known that sign language interpreters/transliterators occupy a unique social and cultural position relative to the communities in which they work. Unlike spoken language interpreting, interpreters/transliterators are uniquely positioned 'between worlds'. Not only do they bridge the gap between spoken and gestural language, they bridge the gap between the socially and culturally dominant hearing world and the culturally and linguistically marginalized world of the Deaf. Yet it is apparent that current models of interpreting/transliterating contribute to an estrangement between the hearing and Deaf worlds. This project explores the current state of affairs through its specific historical and epistemological …

Whips Of Their Own Racial And Sexual Anxiety And Violence In Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights And Rosario Castellanos's The Book Of Lamentations, Renee Foss Jan 2013

Whips Of Their Own Racial And Sexual Anxiety And Violence In Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights And Rosario Castellanos's The Book Of Lamentations, Renee Foss

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores two novels, Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights (1847) and Rosario Castellanos's The Book of Lamentations (1962). These novels accord with the traditional Gothic literary canon (1764-1870) through their invocation of the past and preoccupation with racial and women's sexual difference. These racial and sexual anxieties manifest most strongly through the violent power relations between members of key families of both novels. I open my first chapter, "Victorian Anxiety and Repression in Wuthering Heights," by explaining how the novel's multiple frame structure and unreliable narrators invite the reader to approach the narrative with suspicion and uncover the latent racial …

Sir Richard Has Taken Off His Considering Cap! An Anthropological Critique Of The Disease Model Of Alcoholism, Miranda Black Jan 2013

Sir Richard Has Taken Off His Considering Cap! An Anthropological Critique Of The Disease Model Of Alcoholism, Miranda Black

Theses & ETDs

Chronic alcohol addiction is a condition which manifests in social behaviors as well as biological consequences. Excessive drinking has not always been interpreted with the negative connotations which it bears today. Alcohol has existed in prehistoric cultures not only as a leisurely commodity but as a relic of religious, medicinal, and social rituals. This thesis concerns the role of alcohol use in the United States, focusing on how it came to be stigmatized and how the cultural phenomenon of medicalizing alcohol addiction alleviated, altered, but also in some ways re-invented stigmatization of the alcoholic. Through waves of social myth-making and …

The Queer And The Uncanny In Gothic Literature, Erin Jayes Jan 2013

The Queer And The Uncanny In Gothic Literature, Erin Jayes

Theses & ETDs

This thesis focuses on how the word "queer" helps us understand why Gothic fiction is so fluid, indeterminate, and unsettling. I designate a broad definition of the word "queer" based on non-normative sexualities and genders to illustrate the word's flexible definition. I chose novels that have a physical connection between characters that is marked as erotic and dangerous to good British social order. I use Freud's theory of "the uncanny" as a tool to identify the queer elements in these works because it is interested in the repressed, the disoriented, and the rediscovered. The uncanny describes the feeling of disorientation …

To Be (Or Not To Be) Matses Belonging, Trials Of Assimilation And Changing Morality In The Peruvian Amazon, Lorna Hadlock Jan 2013

To Be (Or Not To Be) Matses Belonging, Trials Of Assimilation And Changing Morality In The Peruvian Amazon, Lorna Hadlock

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is based on seven months of ethnographic fieldwork in two annexes of the Communidad Nativa Matsés (CONAMA) in the Peruvian Amazon. Focusing on narratives and observations of encounters between Matsés and non-Matsés, I dissect belonging, processes of assimilation, and changing morality. I begin with historical information about rubber-boom era altercations, stolen women, and ambiguous relations with non-Matsés prior to "pacified contact" in 1969. Then, I examine glorified stories of the moment of "contact" and relations with Christian missionaries who initiated "contact." Continuing into the present day, I present observations and interviews to document modern interactions and intermarriages between …

The Politicization Of Popular Culture: A Case Study In Reagan And Star Wars, Nathan A. Wingert Jan 2013

The Politicization Of Popular Culture: A Case Study In Reagan And Star Wars, Nathan A. Wingert

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This project examined the use of Ronald Reagan’s rhetoric, specifically the “Star Wars,” “Zero Option” and “Evil Empire” speeches. It answers the question: Why do we know SDI as Star Wars? It also The rationale for the study came from myriad sources, including the historical and political undertones of the Star Wars films and rhetorical criticism of other Reagan speeches. G. Thomas Goodnight’s analysis linked all three speeches together as a reformulation of wartime rhetoric, so that was the rationale for analyzing three speeches. After performing a rhetorical criticism using Burkean identification as the lens, there are several results: Reagan …
