Multiple Intelligence Profiles Of Athletic Training Students, Matthew Kutz, Stephanie Dyer, Brain Campbell
Multiple Intelligence Profiles Of Athletic Training Students, Matthew Kutz, Stephanie Dyer, Brain Campbell
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Context: Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence (MI) theory identifies nine “intelligences” (i.e., ways of learning) that help individuals acquire and apply knowledge in relevant contexts. Objective: To explore athletic training students’ (ATS) dominant intelligences and to observe if “intelligences” differ according to selected demographic variables. Design: The Multiple Intelligence Inventory (MII) was used to identify the dominant intelligences of ATS’s. Setting: Athletic training students actively engaged in a CAATE-accredited educational program. Participants: Eighty-five (85) ATSs participated in the study; mean age 21±1.9; 58% were female and 42% male. Thirty-four (40%) were in their second semester, 15 (18%) were in their third semester, …
Understanding School Genres Using Systemic Functional Linguistics: A Study Of Science And Narrative Texts, Allison D. Canfield
Understanding School Genres Using Systemic Functional Linguistics: A Study Of Science And Narrative Texts, Allison D. Canfield
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this study is to examine elementary level textbooks (grades 2-4; Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing; The Trophies Collection) using Systemic Functional Linguistics as the theoretical framework to study the different types of lexical choice and grammatical options made in the textbooks. The two genres examined are science and narrative, which are significantly different from each other. Science texts are “information based,” and narrative texts, “story based.” It is very important for teachers to understand how the genres are different so that they can convey those differences to their students.
The two school genres, science and narrative, differ from …
Teacher Outreach Efforts And Reading Achievement In Kindergarten, Eunjoo Jung, Heejeong S. Han
Teacher Outreach Efforts And Reading Achievement In Kindergarten, Eunjoo Jung, Heejeong S. Han
Child and Family Studies
To estimate the overall relationship between teachers’ outreach efforts and the reading achievement of diverse kindergarteners over the school year, multilevel modeling techniques were applied using a large sample of kindergarten students. The results showed that, in schools with greater outreach efforts by teachers, there were sharper gains in the reading scores of students with low initial reading ability and students who frequently read outside of school. Minority students with low initial reading ability did not show much gains in schools where teachers engaged more in outreach. These findings demonstrate that teacher outreach efforts, student minority status, and reading outside …
Was That Ethical? Feminist Critics’ Response To The “Queerness” Of Modernist Women’S Writing, Meridith M. Kruse
Was That Ethical? Feminist Critics’ Response To The “Queerness” Of Modernist Women’S Writing, Meridith M. Kruse
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
This article employs insights from contemporary theories of ethical reading to conduct a case study of feminist critics’ reaction to the queerness of modernist women’s writing. My aim is to develop a set of practices and principles for ethically responding to queerness in literary texts and everyday life, as well as contribute feminist acumen to the current claim that the humanities are the best site to train students how to do justice to texts. The introduction utilizes theories of ethical reading set forth by Jane Gallop and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick to develop a preliminary framework of ethical response. The subsequent …
Social Skills Training In Elementary Schools, Nathan Greene
Social Skills Training In Elementary Schools, Nathan Greene
Theses and Graduate Projects
Social skills are a major component of social development in elementary aged students within today's educational world. Current research suggests that a certain number of students do not respond to traditional teaching approaches targeted at remediating social skill deficits. These deficits frequently result in behavior problems, difficulties in peer situations, and not living up to their academic potential. Additionally, professionals in the field have discovered that when a socially struggling student is paired with an appropriate intervention, these obstacles can be overcome. The material in this report supports, informs,, and shapes the content and teaching strategies used in the elementary …
Culturally Appropriate Nursing Care For International Patients, Kate Larson
Culturally Appropriate Nursing Care For International Patients, Kate Larson
Theses and Graduate Projects
Cultural competence is a necessary skill for nurses. It requires ongoing learning for continuous improvement in the healthcare setting. Nurses who are knowledgeable in providing culturally appropriate nursing care are able to meet patients' needs by building trust and minimizing cultural pain. Providing nursing care with nurses who have advanced nursing degrees and knowledge of culture and international patient care is an effective model for the ambulatory setting. Trans-global travel for healthcare is increasing therefore a nursing model designed to meet the culture care needs of international patient care is required. This nursing model describes culturally appropriate nursing care in …
Myths Of The House Theatre Of Chicago (2002-2007): A Dramaturgical Study Of Chicago's "Next Big Thing", Matthew Foss
Myths Of The House Theatre Of Chicago (2002-2007): A Dramaturgical Study Of Chicago's "Next Big Thing", Matthew Foss
Wayne State University Dissertations
In 2002, Chicago's theatre critics targeted The House as the next big story in the city's theatre community. The House's first play, The Terrible Tragedy of Peter Pan was a critical and financial hit for the young company. Peter Pan began a five-year period of nearly unprecedented success for The House. During this time, many discussions about The House dealt with a perceived mythical quality to the type of plays the young company was creating. This study examines this question of myth in The House's plays by creating a dramaturgy that incorporates the myth theory of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Vladimir Propp …

English Proficiency / Fluent English Proficient Students, Susan R. Adams
English Proficiency / Fluent English Proficient Students, Susan R. Adams
Scholarship and Professional Work – Education
K-12 students whose first language is not English are identified upon enrollment in U.S. schools through a home language survey and are immediately assessed to determine whether English as a second language (ESL) services are required. Students who do not pass this initial screening assessment are classified as English Language Learners (ELLs), or as limited English proficiency (LEP) students, and are identified to receive school-provided English language development (ELD) and accommodations. Students who pass the initial screener or who demonstrate English proficiency two years in a row on state-mandated annual assessments are deemed fluent or fully English proficient (FEP) students …
Transformative Leadership: An Asset-Based Approach To Leadership For Diverse Schools And Learners, Marilyn Sudsberry, Brooke Kandel-Cisco
Transformative Leadership: An Asset-Based Approach To Leadership For Diverse Schools And Learners, Marilyn Sudsberry, Brooke Kandel-Cisco
Scholarship and Professional Work – Education
Traditionally, school leadership has been viewed as emanating from a sole source, the school administrator. This top-down perspective suggests that school leadership lives and dies by the leader's specific skills, mind-set, and preferred activities. This perspective ultimately oversimplifies the difficult work that school administrators must navigate in order to ensure the success of all learners. While there is no doubt that many individual school administrators are empathetic and compassionate educators, unilateral decision-making means that the cultural, linguistic and social lenses utilized to inform decision-making are limited to the perspective of the administrator.
In this chapter we propose that school leadership …
Audacious Translation: Learning The Double Bind To Translate Spivak, Susan R. Adams
Audacious Translation: Learning The Double Bind To Translate Spivak, Susan R. Adams
Scholarship and Professional Work – Education
In Chapter 12 of An Aesthetic Education in the Era of Globalization (2012), Spivak eludes apprehension, spurns comprehension, and resists neat translation as I, an American educator, feebly reaches and grasps to make sense of what is meant by an aesthetic education as Spivak translates the act of translation. Caught and othered in learning the double bind of translation, I find no answers, only new questions as I grope toward ways to conceptualize and to name this moment for language educators:
- Can and should the convenient genie of English as the language of power and globalization be pushed back into …

The Relationship Between Double Dosing And Middle School Math Student Achievement, Jon Franco
The Relationship Between Double Dosing And Middle School Math Student Achievement, Jon Franco
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This study examined the following research question: Is there a significant difference in math performance between the total sample of below grade level 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students engaged in double dosing and the sample of below grade level 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students not engaged in double dosing? Double dosing means pulling struggling students from elective classes during the school day in favor of an extra remediation class generally in the areas of reading, writing and math. The practice of double dosing is more prevalent within the elementary schools; however, as a result of the high stakes …

Politeness Devices In The Tuvan Language, Vitaly Voinov
Politeness Devices In The Tuvan Language, Vitaly Voinov
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
Whereas a few core areas of the Tuvan language (such as phonology and morphology) have been fairly well described by linguists, pragmasemantic topics in the language, including politeness, have until now not been probed deeply. Using insights from theories of linguistic politeness proposed by Brown & Levinson (1978, 1987) and by their numerous critics (e.g., Ide 1989; Nwoye 1992; Watts 2003; Lakoff & Ide 2005; LPRG 2011), in this dissertation I investigate the morphosyntactic, pragmatic and sociolinguistic aspects of some of the primary verbal means that Tuvans use in conversation to express politeness to each other. The language material is …
"Something Old And Dark Has Got Its Way": Shakespeare's Influence In The Gothic Literary Tradition, Natalie A. Hewitt
"Something Old And Dark Has Got Its Way": Shakespeare's Influence In The Gothic Literary Tradition, Natalie A. Hewitt
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines Shakespeare’s role as the most significant precursor to the Gothic author in Britain, suggesting that Shakespeare used the same literary conventions that Gothic writers embraced as they struggled to create a new subgenre of the novel. By borrowing from Shakespeare’s canon, these novelists aimed to persuade readers and critics that rather than undermining the novel’s emergent, still unassured status as an acceptable literary genre, the nontraditional aspects of their works paid homage to Shakespeare’s imaginative vision. Gothic novelists thereby legitimized their attempts at literary expression. Despite these efforts, Gothic writers did not instantly achieve the type of …
Comparing The Teaching Of Culture In Esl/Efl Classrooms, Daniela Silva
Comparing The Teaching Of Culture In Esl/Efl Classrooms, Daniela Silva
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present research is interested in investigating if culture is approached in efl and esl classrooms. If it is, we want to know the differences in curriculum (textbooks and syllabi), especially as it pertains to cultural knowledge, in an efl class in Brazil, compared to an esl class in the united states. We will also investigate the classroom practices for incorporating culture into the English language classrooms in those contexts. Finally, we will check which cultural teaching approaches are evident in those efl and esl classrooms. Although it is difficult to define precisely what is meant by the term "culture", …

Lightning-Rod Men, Magnetic Lives, Bodies Electric: Electromagnetic Corporeality In Emerson, Melville, & Whitman, James Patrick Gorham
Lightning-Rod Men, Magnetic Lives, Bodies Electric: Electromagnetic Corporeality In Emerson, Melville, & Whitman, James Patrick Gorham
Open Access Dissertations
From the time of American independence to the antebellum period, Americans labored to distinguish their collective identity from that of their colonial forebears in a world increasingly shaped by technological advances, industrial transformations, and scientific developments. Discoveries regarding electricity and electromagnetism resulted in inventions that would especially revolutionize human life. The advent of the lightning-rod in the mid-eighteenth century challenged prior notions that a destructive lightning bolt was an inevitable consequence of divine will, with any interference with that power understood as sacrilege. The rod symbolized a new, Franklinian American, who, steeped in Enlightenment science and philosophy, could stand up …

Motivations For Entering Volunteer Service And Factors Affecting Productivity: A Mixed Method Survey Of Steps-Ovc Volunteer Hiv Caregivers In Zambia, Jessica Price, Tina Moyo, Stephanie Topp, Drosin Mulenga, Mardieh Dennis, Mathew Ngunga
HIV and AIDS
This study by the Population Council and the Zambia-Led Prevention Initiative was designed to examine the motivations of individuals volunteering as STEPS-OVC caregivers; to explore their experiences in service, including perceived barriers to carrying out their volunteer work and if, and how, their expectations for volunteering had been met or not; to assess individuals’ intent to continue caregiving; and to ascertain factors associated with volunteer productivity. Two main findings stand out from this study: that communitarian and religious helping values were virtually universal in the study population, and that a majority of the volunteers indicated economic and material interests and …

A Toolkit For Developing Bilingual Lexicons For International Hiv Prevention Clinical Trials, Catalina B. Ramirez, Natasha Mack, Barbara Friedland
HIV and AIDS
No standardized process exists for developing a set of agreed upon terms, definitions, and translations in local languages that ensures participants understand both technical and nontechnical terms used in a clinical trial context. HIV prevention trials deal with a disease that is stigmatized and with sexual behaviors that may not be openly discussed, thus care must be taken in the selection of words to ensure terms are appropriate for use in the context of a clinical trial and understandable but not offensive. The lack of a standardized process can make it difficult for researchers to decide which words to use, …
