Price Discount Perception: Consumers' Numeric Interpretation Of Semantic Price Claims, Albert J. Della Bitta, Patricia A. Norberg Jan 2013

Price Discount Perception: Consumers' Numeric Interpretation Of Semantic Price Claims, Albert J. Della Bitta, Patricia A. Norberg

College of Business Faculty Publications

Behavioral pricing research includes a considerable amount of focus on the effects of semantic cues (phrases) used to label reference and offer prices in price promotions, but a related type of semantic claim also frequently used in price promotions has continued to escape research attention - claims that attempt to encourage purchases by describing the consequences of buying at the discounted price (e.g. Super Savings). Using a variety of methods and conceptual foundations, the present research is the first to comprehensively study consumers' discount and value associations of these semantic claims. In a series of three studies, we find evidence …

Neuropsychological Outcome In Relation To Duration Of Early Orphanage Experience, Jacquelyn Marie Perry Avery Jan 2013

Neuropsychological Outcome In Relation To Duration Of Early Orphanage Experience, Jacquelyn Marie Perry Avery

Wayne State University Dissertations

In this sample of 144 children with a history of prior orphanage experience, increasing duration of institutionalization is related to decreasing performance for a number of cognitive domains, most consistently verbal measures and executive Functioning measures. The relationships with duration for measures requiring visual-spatial skills were more mixed and a visual reasoning task was found to significantly relate to duration but not a measure of visual memory or a measure of nonverbal achievement. There was little evidence to support a relationship between the duration of institutionalization and fine-motor dexterity. The strongest relationships with duration were observed for language measures followed …

Engineering Problem Solving And Sustained Learning: A Mixed Methods Study To Explore The Dynamics Of Engineering Knowledge Creation, Rachel Itabashi-Campbell Jan 2013

Engineering Problem Solving And Sustained Learning: A Mixed Methods Study To Explore The Dynamics Of Engineering Knowledge Creation, Rachel Itabashi-Campbell

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation research explores processes by which engineering problem solving (EPS) results in sustained organizational learning. Approaching from a constructionist perspective, the study empirically examines the knowledge creation dynamics instigated by product-related problems using a mixed methods research approach. The research has identified the Japanese concept of ba, defined in this study as "shared experiential space," as a key construct that explains the phenomena of interest. A new framework that the study has developed, which interprets EPS as an epistemic journey to attain system-wide improvements, is highly complementary to the traditional structured routine based approaches to engineering operations and …

Theological Existentialism In San Manuel Bueno, Mártir, Catherine Ann Hollingsworth Jan 2013

Theological Existentialism In San Manuel Bueno, Mártir, Catherine Ann Hollingsworth

Wayne State University Dissertations

This doctoral dissertation, entitled Theological Existentialism in San Manuel Bueno, mártir consults a common classic canon, San Manuel Bueno, mártir by Miguel de Unamuno (Bilbao, 1864-Salamanca, 1936). The story is set in a remote rural rustic village of Valverde de Lucerna in the bucolic Diocese of Renada which lies by a symbolic lake and snow-capped cloudy mountain resembling, said, San Manuel, noting in a quote that, "He was tall, slender, and erect; he carried himself the way our Vulture Peak carries its crest, and his eyes had all the blue depth of our lake". Carrying sacred and secular connotations it …

Child And Family Predictors Of Bullying In Middle School Students, Rene Michele Nota

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the shared variables that contribute to direct and indirect aggression, specifically bullying and to explore the role of family context, and adolescent personality characteristics on predicting bullying behavior. The theoretical framework of this study was based on evidence that no specific element can describe why some individuals are at risk for behaving aggressively and other are more resilient. The study included 259 middle schools students in grades six through eight. The students were enrolled at a single middle school located in a suburban area. The largest group of students was African American, …

Future Contingents, Freedom, And Foreknowledge, Mohammed Abouzahr Jan 2013

Future Contingents, Freedom, And Foreknowledge, Mohammed Abouzahr

Wayne State University Dissertations

This essay is a contribution to the new trend and old tradition of analyzing theological fatalism in light of its relationship to logical fatalism. All results pertain to branching temporal systems that use the A-theory and assume presentism. The project focuses on two kinds of views about branching time. One position is true futurism, which designates what will occur regardless of contingency. The opposing view is open futurism, by which no possible course of events is privileged over others; that is, there are no soft facts.

A contextualist theory of temporal standpoints, standpoint inheritance, is designed to enhance Priorian temporal …

Public Buildings And Civic Benefactions In Western Rough Cilicia: Insights From Signaling Theory, Luann Wandsnider Jan 2013

Public Buildings And Civic Benefactions In Western Rough Cilicia: Insights From Signaling Theory, Luann Wandsnider

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

In the Hellenistic and Roman world of the eastern Mediterranean, Greek and Greco-Roman cities came to be defined by their physical cityscape. These buildings were constructed by specific city institutions, such as the council and the assembly, and financed through city funds, mass subscription and, importantly, public benefactions. Public benefactions, which also included support for festivals and competitions, were made by certain elite and usually wealthy individuals to the benefit of a defined community of citizens (and sometimes non-citizens, as in the case of fortification walls). Institutions within the benefiting community, again the council and the assembly, acknowledged these gifts …

Adaptive Semantic Annotation Of Entity And Concept Mentions In Text, Pablo N. Mendes Jan 2013

Adaptive Semantic Annotation Of Entity And Concept Mentions In Text, Pablo N. Mendes

Kno.e.sis Publications

The recent years have seen an increase in interest for knowledge repositories that are useful across applications, in contrast to the creation of ad hoc or application-specific databases.
These knowledge repositories figure as a central provider of unambiguous identifiers and semantic relationships between entities. As such, these shared entity descriptions serve as a common vocabulary to exchange and organize information in different formats and for different purposes. Therefore, there has been remarkable interest in systems that are able to automatically tag textual documents with identifiers from shared knowledge repositories so that the content in those documents is described in a …

Flight Deck Models Of Workload And Multi-Tasking: An Overview Of Validation, Christopher D. Wickens, Angelia Sebok Jan 2013

Flight Deck Models Of Workload And Multi-Tasking: An Overview Of Validation, Christopher D. Wickens, Angelia Sebok

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2013

We review 24 computational modeling efforts of pilot multi-task performance and workload, to describe the manner in which they model three different aspects of pilot performance: the complexity of effort, the complexity of time management and the complexity of multiple resource interference. We then discuss the degree of validation of these models, and the validity of the context in which they are validated.

Flirting With Conversion: Negotiating Researcher Non-Belief With Missionaries, Hillary K. Crane Jan 2013

Flirting With Conversion: Negotiating Researcher Non-Belief With Missionaries, Hillary K. Crane

Faculty Publications

This article discusses Crane’s research in a Taiwanese Buddhist monastery. Crane came to the field as a former Catholic, which provided a particular lens through which to perceive the phenomena she researched. Beyond the difficulties of having one's research interests misinterpreted by the community one is researching and the ambiguities that result from remaining open to conversion when studying religious communities, Crane examines the further difficulty confronted when researching religious personnel who have an interest in representing their religious ideals both to and through the researcher. The article examines Crane’s time in the Buddhist monastery and explores her personal ambivalence …

The Teacher-Student Writing Conference Reimaged: Entangled Becoming-Writingconferencing, Donna Kalmbach Phillips, Mindy Legard Larson Jan 2013

The Teacher-Student Writing Conference Reimaged: Entangled Becoming-Writingconferencing, Donna Kalmbach Phillips, Mindy Legard Larson

Faculty Publications

This analysis is experimental: we attempt to read data with the work of Karen Barad and in doing so ‘see’ teacher-student writing conferences (a common pedagogy of US elementary school writing) as intra-activity. Data were gathered during teacher-student writing conferences in a grade five US classroom over a six week period. One conference between a researcher and a male Latino student, a Student of Labels, is diffracted. Reading and writing and thinking with Barad disrupts our habitual ways of privileging language as representational. Rather, we consider the material-discursive practices of schooling that produce what comes to matter, leading …

Examining Disequilibrium In An Immersion Experience, Carol J. Brazo, Genevieve Harris, Rebecca A. Addleman Jan 2013

Examining Disequilibrium In An Immersion Experience, Carol J. Brazo, Genevieve Harris, Rebecca A. Addleman

Faculty Publications

This study examines the disequilibrium raised by a cultural immersion experience, using the structure of White racial identity development, in an effort to better scaffold the immersion experience in the future. Thirty-two students participated in an immersion experience in Quito, Ecuador. The study follows their experience as they strive to make sense of their experience and begin to understand and unpack their own sense of privilege. The six stages of racial identity development are used as a grid through which to view and consider the experiences of teacher candidates in a cultural immersion experience. Two predominant themes included schools/classroom management, …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Efl Learners’ Task-Generated Discourse, Hazleena Baharun, Abd Razak Zakaria Jan 2013

A Qualitative Analysis Of Efl Learners’ Task-Generated Discourse, Hazleena Baharun, Abd Razak Zakaria

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This study examined oral discourse generated by learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) using two different communication task types i.e. jigsaw and decision-making. It investigated how the learners approached and processed the tasks and how they interacted during task completion. The data for the study comprised transcribed recordings of learner interactions working on given tasks. They were qualitatively analysed focusing on the cognitive and social processing. Findings showed that both task types promoted episodes of negotiated interaction when the participants attempted task completion. However, close examination showed that the participants engaged in more intensive negotiations which were exploratory …

A general linear multivariate regression was conducted using the SPSS for the overall score of the MUET together with their scores on each of the …

Postmodernism Approach In Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh), M.A. Ramli Jan 2013

Postmodernism Approach In Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh), M.A. Ramli

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The history of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) has gone through various phases. From the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), it has continuously become a dynamic force in fulfilling the contemporary needs of the Ummah. After the period of imitation (taqlid), Islamic jurisprudence enters the renewal process (tajdid) in order to rejuvenate Muslim society to the practice of Ijtihad. The emergence of new approach was caused by the changes and developments in human life that spark to the existence of new issues, which their answers cannot be traced in the works of classical fiqh. Accordingly, some would prefer to utilize the …

Husserl And Foucault On The Subject: The Companions, Harry Nethery Iv Jan 2013

Husserl And Foucault On The Subject: The Companions, Harry Nethery Iv

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this text, I argue for the revision of Husserlian phenomenology through a dialogue with the work of Michel Foucault. Specifically, I argue that Foucault's critical project, in which we isolate the contingent limits of thought so as to pass beyond them, and thus think new ways of being, can be filled out by the work of Edmund Husserl and differentiated into two lines of inquiry: a critical ontology and a critical phenomenology. This is accomplished by bringing these two philosophers, commonly held to be diametrically opposed, into dialogue such that together they say something that neither could say on …

Whispers Of Conversation Between Thomas Merton And Sallie Mcfague On God, Self, And The World: Considering Engaged Spirituality Today, Emily D Manning Jan 2013

Whispers Of Conversation Between Thomas Merton And Sallie Mcfague On God, Self, And The World: Considering Engaged Spirituality Today, Emily D Manning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses upon the question, "how are we called to live?", relying on the thought and dialogue of Thomas Merton, a 20th Century Catholic monk, and Sallie McFague, a 21st Century Protestant theologian. This question is approached by examining Merton and McFague's understandings of God, self, and the world as these aspects relate to the question and issue of Christian living. In exploring these areas this project brings together aspects of Christian spirituality, theology, and ethics to grasp the intimate relationship between faith and action, which is the essence of authentic Christian discipleship. Ultimately, the merging of faith and …

Comparison Of Fuzzy And Pid Based Governor's Response In Utilization Of Dg Spinning Reserve, J.A. Laghari, Hazlie Mokhlis, Ab Halim Abu Bakar, M. Karimi, H. Mohammad

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

When tripping events or overloading cases occur in power system, load shedding scheme operates to shed some load and stabilize the frequency. However, amount of load to be shed greatly depends on, how fast governor can utilize DG spinning reserve. This paper compares the response of DG with fuzzy based governor and PID based governor in utilization of DG spinning reserve. The simulation results show that DG with fuzzy based governor utilizes spinning reserve more quickly and requires lesser load to be shed than a DG with PID based governor.

Beyond The Straight State: On The Borderlands Of Sexuality, Ethnicity, And Nation In The United States And Europe, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

Borderlands-limned, delimited, and defined by the presence, imaginary presence, or absence of geospatial boundaries contingent upon state power have many representations. Positive and negative state sanction through rights, privileges, policing, or enforcement are often determined by a person's position with respect to such boundaries. Sometimes such boundaries, like the borders of nation-states that generally define citizenship, seem to have taken on nearly immutable fixity. The historical processes through which institutional structures accredited to these questions of space and sanction began to take their modem shape in the eighteenth century. Often, however, borderlands are more imagined than physical, more contingent upon …
