Urban Pds Partnership: Preparing Teachers For Social Justice, Connie L. Bowman, Rachel M. B. Collopy, Jamie Bentley, Elizabeth Cameron, David A. Taylor
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
We believe that for urban schools to meet their goals and mission — in the way the DECA is modeling — takes a partnership among many stakeholders. One such partnership that supports DECA, and might buttress other schools and students — and simultaneously help to enact a social justice ideal — is a school-university connection. DECA was founded as a Professional Development School (PDS), with the school and university developing a reciprocal relationship with a shared focus on the preparation of new teachers, the enhancement of high school students' achievement, school and university faculty members' professional development, and collaborative inquiries …
'In Love With Either/Or': Religion And Oppositional Logic In Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale (Chapter 3 Of Irigaray, Incarnation And Contemporary Women's Fiction), Abigail Rine
Faculty Publications - Department of English
Excerpt: "Margaret Atwood is a prolific and award-winning Canadian writer whose work regularly exposes the destructive and oppressive forces at work in society, particularly as they affect women. Though Atwood refers to herself as a 'strict agnostic: she maintains an interest in religion, which is evident in her fictional work (Moyers 2006).1 Atwood's second novel, Surfacing (1973) , has received a fair amount of critical attention for its religious themes and is examined in both Carol Christ's Diving Deep and Surfacing and Barbara Rigney's work Lilith's Daughters.2 Atwood's Cat's Eye (1989), with its mystical Marian imagery, has also been explored …
Paul's Poetic License: Philippians 2:6-11 As A Hellenistic Hymn, Anna Groebe
Paul's Poetic License: Philippians 2:6-11 As A Hellenistic Hymn, Anna Groebe
Honors Program: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
In this paper, I use the scholarship surrounding Philippians 2:6-11 to identify it as a pre-Pauline hymn influenced by Greek culture. I use Dr. Arnold Levin’s essay “Paul’s Victory Song” as a springboard, investigating his arguments as well as other more well-known scholarship covering the passage. Dr. Levin argues that Philippians 2:6-11 is a Greek ode in the Aeolic style written in imitation of Pindar, with a clearly established meter. Although I disagree with Dr. Levin's methods and conclusion, I do not completely reject all of his argument. Philippians 2:6-11 does not have a clear meter as one might find …
Literacy Strategy Journal: Planning Literacy Instruction In A Liberal Arts College, Antonio Causarano
Literacy Strategy Journal: Planning Literacy Instruction In A Liberal Arts College, Antonio Causarano
Education Faculty Articles
This paper discusses the importance of writing, developing, and implementing a literacy strategy journal as a junior faculty teaching literacy courses in a University in the United States. The analysis of the content of the literacy strategy journal is carried out by applying a Bakhtinian dialogic framework to become aware and understand how dialogicality between the instructor and the content of the literacy strategy journal supported a systematic and in depth self-reflection aimed to improve teaching and pedagogy in the literacy courses taught. The author wants to demonstrate that the literacy strategy journal is not a static object, a legal …

A Model Of Faith-Learning Integration In Exemplary Teaching Faculty, Kathryn A. Westrate
A Model Of Faith-Learning Integration In Exemplary Teaching Faculty, Kathryn A. Westrate
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The integration of faith and learning serves as a central tenet for Christian higher education. Though valued for its guiding principles of faithful scholarship, the ambiguous and philosophical nature of the concept leaves a gap of understanding of how faith-learning is actualized, let alone actualized excellently, in the classroom. In order to explore the essence of the concept, 11 academic teaching faculty members selected for their exemplary faith-learning work from a small faith-based liberal arts institution were interviewed. Representing a diverse field of disciplines, the interviews explored the faculty members’ excellence in faith-learning conceptualization and practice. Strong emergent themes resulted …
Mixed Signals: A Phenomenological Study On The Effects Of Cell Phones On College Student Involvement, David M. Chizum
Mixed Signals: A Phenomenological Study On The Effects Of Cell Phones On College Student Involvement, David M. Chizum
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
Leading the United States of America in cell phone use are American college students, of whom 94% have a cell phone, 85% use text messaging, and 75% send texts every day (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, 2008). This study utilized a phenomenological qualitative methodology to examine the effects of cellular telephones on college student involvement, based on Alexander Astin’s (1986) theory of involvement. Seven participants from a small, residential university in the Midwest participated in the study and shared their lived experiences as college student cell phone users living on a cell phone-saturated campus. The results of this study …
Investigating The Relationship Between Age Of Acquisition Of A Second Language And Lexical Retrieval Ability In Bilinguals, Andrea Takahesu Tabori
Investigating The Relationship Between Age Of Acquisition Of A Second Language And Lexical Retrieval Ability In Bilinguals, Andrea Takahesu Tabori
Honors Thesis Collection
The current study investigated the relationship between age of acquisition (AOA) of a second language and lexical retrieval ability in bilinguals. This study compared the lexical retrieval ability of 30 English monolinguals, 25 early Spanish-English bilinguals (AOA birth to three years), and 17 late Spanish-English bilinguals (AOA four to nine years). Participants completed a picture-naming task in English, a measure of non-verbal intelligence (Cattell Culture Fair Test), and a standardized measure of vocabulary size (PPVT-III). We predicted that both bilingual groups would experience more lexical retrieval difficulty on the picture naming tasks relative to monolinguals but that early bilinguals would …

Language And Secession: Linguistic Groups, Language Attitudes, And Nationalism In Quebec, Laura Dulude
Language And Secession: Linguistic Groups, Language Attitudes, And Nationalism In Quebec, Laura Dulude
Honors Thesis Collection
There is a strong secessionist movement in Quebec – in fact, in 1995, 49.5% of the province’s residents voted to secede from Canada. Although we know that this movement is powerful, we do not have a clear idea of which people are most likely to support Quebecois sovereignty. In this thesis, I explore the past and present of Quebec’s nationalism to answer the questions of who supports and who opposes secession. Using a survey, I isolated factors that we can use to predict supporters and detractors of separatism in Quebec, including native language, age, contact with native speakers of French …

Why Hip-Hop Is Queer: Using Queer Theory To Examine Identity Formation In Rap Music, Silvia Galis-Menendez
Why Hip-Hop Is Queer: Using Queer Theory To Examine Identity Formation In Rap Music, Silvia Galis-Menendez
Honors Thesis Collection
Although many believe hip-hop is irredeemably misogynistic and homophobic, hip-hop actually provides a unique space for queer interpretations of identity. Rap music is a poetics and a politics in which construction of oppositional narratives and presentation and performances of race, gender, and sexuality is possible. The works of hip hop artists Azealia Banks, Frank Ocean, Las Krudas, and Big Freedia particularly illuminate the processes of identity formation and presentation. Using queerness to examine hip-hop, and using hip-hop to examine queerness demonstrates the significance of hip-hop as a cultural production and social movement.

Modeling Global Citizenship As A Learning Process, Ryan Williams
Exchange: The Journal of Public Diplomacy
In an era of increasing globalization, Millennials are venturing abroad in record numbers. This paper is the result of a focus group conducted with students in Syracuse University’s Public Diplomacy Program. It explores the impact of international experience on students’ worldview and conceptualizations of citizenship. The end of the paper presents a model of citizenship as a learning process. It delves into notions of personal responsibility mobilized by new life experiences, growing awareness of self, others, critical reflection, and evolving identity. It provides some insight into the way graduate students of public diplomacy conceive of themselves and their role in …
The Intersection Of Culture And Cognition: A Comparison Of Common Core State Standards Argumentative Writing Responses Of Elementary-Aged Hispanic/Latino And European-Origin White Students, Erin O'Hara-Rines
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This exploratory study employed statistical analysis and response excerpts to locate points of intersection between culture and cognition in a comparison of argumentative writing work samples of 74 Oregon fourth and fifth grade Hispanic/Latino and European-origin White students. Major findings indicated that Hispanic/Latino students more often 1) employed a diffuse, recursive organizational style that may be related to traditional features of Mexican discourse, 2) utilized elements of indirect language, a feature that has been associated with collectivist cultures, and 3) incorporated narrative elements, echoing a cultural mode for connection, while White students more often 1) evidenced use of a sequential, …
The Indian History Of An American Institution: Native Americans And Dartmouth, Colin G. (Colin Gordon) Calloway
The Indian History Of An American Institution: Native Americans And Dartmouth, Colin G. (Colin Gordon) Calloway
Dartmouth College Press
About the Book
(from upne.com) Dartmouth College began life as an Indian school, a pretense that has since been abandoned. Still, the institution has a unique, if complicated, relationship with Native Americans and their history. Beginning with Samson Occom’s role as the first “development officer” of the college, Colin G. Calloway tells the entire, complex story of Dartmouth’s historical and ongoing relationship with Native Americans. Calloway recounts the struggles and achievements of Indian attendees and the history of Dartmouth alumni’s involvements with American Indian affairs. He also covers more recent developments, such as the mascot controversies, the emergence of an …
Settlement, Compromise, And Forgiveness In Canadian Income Tax Law, Colin Jackson
Settlement, Compromise, And Forgiveness In Canadian Income Tax Law, Colin Jackson
LLM Theses
This thesis looks at legal mechanisms allowing the non-collection of tax debts in the tax systems of Canada and the United States. The goal is to shed light on the choices made in Canada's tax collection system by juxtaposing it with the American system. The comparison reveals differences in the ways in which the two jurisdictions allow taxpayers to participate in the tax system and differences in how the two jurisdictions choose to make decisions about the forgiveness of tax debts. Although Canada has generally rejected the idea of compromise within the tax system, there is a tax policy case …

An 'Other' Scene, An 'Other' Point Of View: France's Colonial Family Romance, Protée's Postcolonial Fantasies And Claire Denis' 'Screen' Memories, Levilson C. Reis
Modern Languages & Cultures Faculty Scholarship
This article challenges the widely held view that in Chocolat/Chocolate (Denis, 1988) the female protagonist, named 'France', owns the point of view. It argues that the film rejects such an exclusive narrative mode, and invites the spectator to reinterpret the story through the perspectives of others, especially that of the houseboy Protée. Drawing on Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytical theories, this article re-examines three key flashback scenes (the mirror scene, the shower scene, and the big box-office scene), taking Protée's vantage point, while engaging with the para-text of Sartre's, Oyono's and Denis' own postcolonial views. The article finally shows that the …

Evaluating The Grammars Of Children Who Speak Nonmainstream Dialects Of English, Janna B. Oetting, Ryan Lee, Karmen Porter Ph.D.
Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications
In this article, we review three clinical responses to the study and evaluation of grammar in children who speak nonmainstream dialects of English. Then we introduce a fourth, system based response that views nonmainstream dialects of English, such as African American English (AAE) and Southern White English (SWE) as made up of dialect-specific and dialect-universal features. To illustrate the usefulness of a system-based approach and to distinguish our two terms from others in the dialect literature, we present AAE and SWE relative clause data from two previously published studies. Following this, we present new findings from AAE- and SWE-speaking children’s …

Two Fields Are Better Than One: Developmental And Comparative Perspectives On Understanding Spatial Reorientation, Alexandra D. Twyman, Daniele Nardi, Nora S. Newcombe
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
Occasionally, we lose track of our position in the world, and must re-establish where we are located in order to function. This process has been termed the ability to reorient and was first studied by Ken Cheng in 1986. Reorientation research has revealed some powerful cross-species commonalities. It has also engaged the question of human uniqueness because it has been claimed that human adults reorient differently from other species, or from young human children, in a fashion grounded in the distinctive combinatorial power of human language. In this chapter, we consider the phenomenon of reorientation in comparative perspective, both to …
