Laws And Social Norms: Unintended Consequences Of Obesity Laws, Susan Yeh
Laws And Social Norms: Unintended Consequences Of Obesity Laws, Susan Yeh
University of Cincinnati Law Review
Traditional law and economic analysis considers how laws directly incentivize socially optimal behaviors. Meanwhile, a growing theoretical literature posits that beyond deterrence or incentives, laws also communicate normative judgments that can have effects unanticipated by classical predictions. This Article presents empirical evidence supporting the broader legal theory that laws can express social values, leading to shifts in social norms. Using data on adolescent peer networks in the United States, I find that where anti-obesity policies are stricter, social stigma increases for obese girls, though obesity rates do not necessarily decrease. These results are robust and consistent with a model in …

Challenging Cultural Discourses And Beliefs That Perpetuate Domestic Violence In South Asian Communities: A Discourse Analysis, Janki Shankar, Gita Das, Sabrina Atwal
Challenging Cultural Discourses And Beliefs That Perpetuate Domestic Violence In South Asian Communities: A Discourse Analysis, Janki Shankar, Gita Das, Sabrina Atwal
Journal of International Women's Studies
South Asians are one of the fastest growing immigrant communities in North America. Domestic violence (DV) in the South Asian community is at least as prevalent as it is in the general population, yet is massively underreported. Several reasons have been cited for the silence of South Asian immigrant women about DV. While some of these are financial, social and structural, there are others that arise from discourses specific to South Asian communities. The aim of this study was to examine the origins of these discourses using the framework of historical critical discourse analysis. This paper presents the results of …
Assessing Reliability And Validity Of The 15-Item Short Version Of The Attitudes Toward Women Scale (Aws) Among Turkish Students, Raquel Delevi, Asli Bugay
Assessing Reliability And Validity Of The 15-Item Short Version Of The Attitudes Toward Women Scale (Aws) Among Turkish Students, Raquel Delevi, Asli Bugay
Journal of International Women's Studies
The purpose of the present study was to adapt the 15-item short version of Attitude toward Women Scale (AWS) (Spence & Helmreich, 1978) into Turkish by first doing the translation of its items and then by investigating its preliminary psychometric properties. AWS and Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) were administered to Turkish college students. Factor structures, convergent validity, and internal reliability were investigated across two independent samples. Result revealed satisfactory internal reliability, convergent and construct validity for the 12-item short version in both samples, suggesting that the scale can be used as a reliable instrument in the Turkish culture to …
The 'Emancipated Ladies' Of America In The Travel Writing Of Fredrika Bremer And Alexandra Gripenberg, Sirpa Salenius
The 'Emancipated Ladies' Of America In The Travel Writing Of Fredrika Bremer And Alexandra Gripenberg, Sirpa Salenius
Journal of International Women's Studies
The Swedish novelist Fredrika Bremer (1801-1865) and the Finnish Baroness Alexandra Gripenberg (1857-1913), both active women’s rights advocates who toured in the United States in the 1850s and 1880s, respectively, used their travel writing as a powerful medium in promoting their ideological agendas. They articulated their gender politics through presenting American women as pioneers, leaders in women’s suffrage and models of female emancipation. Women’s activism in America was perceptible not only in the formally organized women’s rights movement but also in various reform movements (abolitionism, temperance, and labor movements) that contributed to women’s suffrage on a worldwide scale. As the …

In Retrospect: Navigating Culturally Responsive Pedagogy In Teacher Education, Chinwe Ikpeze
Education Faculty/Staff Publications
In lieu of an abstract, here is the chapter's first paragraph:
This chapter discusses my attempt to implement culturally relevant teaching in a graduate literacy course to increase my teaching effectiveness and to better my relationship with my students. The discourse on culturally responsive teaching (CRT) has centered on preparing mostly White, middle-class teachers to teach in highly diverse urban classrooms (Cochran-Smith, Davis, & Fries, 2004; Gay, 2010). However, what has not been addressed in the research literature is how foreign-born teacher educators negotiate culturally responsive teaching, especially in predominately White teaching colleges. Foreign-born scholars of color may add the …

Generating Co-Occurring Facial Nonmanual Signals In Synthesized American Sign Language, Jerry Schnepp, Rosalee Wolfe, John Mcdonald, Jorge Toro
Generating Co-Occurring Facial Nonmanual Signals In Synthesized American Sign Language, Jerry Schnepp, Rosalee Wolfe, John Mcdonald, Jorge Toro
Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications
Translating between English and American Sign Language (ASL) requires an avatar to display synthesized ASL. Essential to the language are nonmanual signals that appear on the face. In the past, these have posed a difficult challenge for signing avatars. Previous systems were hampered by an inability to portray simultaneously-occurring nonmanual signals on the face. This paper presents a method designed for supporting co-occurring nonmanual signals in ASL. Animations produced by the new system were tested with 40 members of the Deaf community in the United States. Participants identified all of the nonmanual signals even when they co-occurred. Co-occurring question nonmanuals …

"At The Hospital There Are No Human Rights": Reproductive And Sexual Rights Violations Of Women Living With Hiv In Namibia, Aziza Ahmed
Faculty Scholarship
This report documents the ongoing stigma and discrimination of women living with HIV in Namibia, building on prior findings and investigations on the subject, such as the 2008 research conducted by the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (ICW) and the Namibian Women’s Health Network (NWHN). The report, based upon both desk research and a field mission, examines the human rights situation related to sexual and reproductive health of women living with HIV, including the gravity and ongoing nature of forced and coerced sterilizations in Namibia. The report also provides evidence of violations of informed consent in the context …

The Effects Of Labeling Hispanic English Language Learners As Learning Disabled, Sandra Irma Rodriguez
The Effects Of Labeling Hispanic English Language Learners As Learning Disabled, Sandra Irma Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
English language learners (ELLs) are often placed in special education due to lack of knowledge on the part of educators of the language acquisition process and because of the pressures educators face to meet state and federal accountability standards. Once in special education, many students’ experiences lead to negative outcomes for those students including stigmatization, inadequate academic preparation, and few opportunities for a successful professional career potential. The purpose of this cross case study was to investigate the effects of labeling English language learners as learning disabled (LD). Three ELLs with normal intelligence who were labeled as LD and placed …

Training Verb Argument Structure Production In Agrammatic Aphasia: Behavioral And Neural Recovery Patterns, Cynthia K. Thompson, Ellyn A. Riley, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Aya Meltzer-Asscher, Sladjana Lukic
Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research
Introduction
Neuroimaging and lesion studies indicate a left hemisphere network for verb and verb argument structure processing, involving both frontal and temporoparietal brain regions. Although their verb comprehension is generally unimpaired, it is well known that individuals with agrammatic aphasia often present with verb production deficits, characterized by an argument structure complexity hierarchy, indicating faulty access to argument structure representations for production and integration into syntactic contexts. Recovery of verb processing in agrammatism, however, has received little attention and no studies have examined the neural mechanisms associated with improved verb and argument structure processing. In the present study we trained …International Mother Language Day, Natalya Grabavoy

Effects Of Group Work On English Communicative Competence Of Chinese International Graduates In United States Institutions Of Higher Education, Mo Xue
The Qualitative Report
This qualitative study investigated 14 Chinese international graduate students’ lived experiences with group work and the effect s of group work on their English communicative competence. The interview results showed that these participants’ attitudes towards group work went through changes from initial inadaptation or dislike to later adaptation or acceptance, and the time for their adjustment ranged from half a year to one year. The results also revealed that group work greatly improved their English communicative competence in terms of grammatical competence, sociolinguistic competence, and strategic competence. Suggestions for educational researchers, international students, and Chinese EFL instructors were provided.

How Do Comics Talk About Love?, Frank Bramlett
How Do Comics Talk About Love?, Frank Bramlett
English Faculty Publications
In recognition of Valentine’s Day, I decided to write a post about love in comics. But not any kind of love, of course, will do for this post—it should be about love across boundaries and the language that instantiates it.
Scenes from a Multiverse is a web comic by Jon Rosenberg that began appearing on the web in 2010. It explores social situations from an extraordinarily wide-ranging perspective of a multiplicity of worlds. As a satirist, Rosenberg often borrows from current events or internet memes and adapts them for his own purposes, making commentary about what he sees as social …
A Numerical Study On Assessing Trusted Brand For Container Shipping Companies By Using Fuzzy Mcdm Approach, Ji-Feng Ding
A Numerical Study On Assessing Trusted Brand For Container Shipping Companies By Using Fuzzy Mcdm Approach, Ji-Feng Ding
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The main purpose of this paper is to develop a fuzzy multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach to assess the trusted brand for container shipping companies and to illustrate the computing process by using a numerical study. Firstly, some of the theoretical methodologies used in this research are introduced. Secondly, a step-by-step fuzzy MCDM algorithm, including five systematic procedures, is proposed. Finally, a hypothetical and numerical example of assessing trusted brand is studied to demonstrate the computational process of the proposed fuzzy MCDM algorithm. Besides, the merit of this paper with its methodologies can be employed as a practical tool for …

(No) State Interests In Regulating Gender: How Suppression Of Gender Nonconformity Violates Freedom Of Speech, Jeffrey Kosbie
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
Despite limited growth in legal protections for transgender people, dress and appearance are largely treated as unprotected matters of personal preference. In response, lawyers and scholars argue that dress and appearance are intimately connected to the expression of identity. Nonetheless, courts have generally deferred to the government’s proffered justifications for these laws.
This article refocuses on the government’s alleged interests in regulating gender nonconformity. Using a First Amendment analysis, the article reveals how seemingly neutral government interests are used to single out conduct because it expresses messages of gender nonconformity. This approach avoids impossible questions about the subjective intent of …

On Landscape Criticism And Literary Criticism, Jorge D. Goldfarb
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
This article explores the adoption of notions and methods of literary criticism to the criticism of non-designed landscapes. As a position paper, it argues that attempts to organise and structure the vast multiplicity of landscape instances should follow the path laid by literary criticism when dealing with the multiplicity of literary works. The case is presented for the adoption of genre, as understood by contemporary literary critics, to serve as a categorisation tool for instances of non-designed landscapes. A distinction between primary and secondary, along the lines proposed by Bakhtin for speech genres, appears promising for organising the variety of …
