Positioning Preservice Teachers As Writers And Researchers, Jason H. Wirtz

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

This essay illustrates three theoretical concepts for the pre-service writing classroom learned from Wendy Bishop and Diane Holt-Reynolds: teachers of writing should be writers themselves; testimonials from writers should shape pre-service writing curricula; and content knowledge and the ability to teach content knowledge are discreet skill sets. Three practical assignments are presented to articulate these theoretical concepts in the pre-service writing classroom: Digital Poetry, Qualitative Interview Study, and Embedded Research.

Gatekeepers And Guides: Preparing Future Writing Teachers To Negotiate Standard Language Ideology, Melinda J. Mcbee Orzulak

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

This study of pre-service English teachers suggests benefits for exploring standard language ideology with new teachers of writing, such as increased awareness of the dilemmic positions occupied by teachers of writing and better understanding of the relationship between oral and written language. Implications include the need for writing teacher education to focus on the relationship between ideologies and enactment of specific methods, as pre-service teachers may face dilemmas related to beliefs about standard language and their positions as gatekeepers. Exploring additional subject positions for writing teachers, such as guide or language user, may help support stances that promote equitable writing …

National Subscription Television V. S & H, Tv: The Problem Of Unauthorized Interception Of Subscription Television—Are The Legal Airwaves Unscrambled?, Thomas R. Catanese

Pepperdine Law Review

The unending stream of technological innovations that best exemplifies the electronic media has left the law in its wake. Because of rapid advancements in the forms communications may take, the law has sometimes been slow in effectively and rationally affording protection against the piracy of these new types of electronic media. One such type of electronic media is the transmission of over-the-air scrambled broadcasts, more properly "subscription" television, wherein a party pays a subscription fee to receive nonstandard television programming. National Subscription Television v. S & H, TV, in view of prior divided case law, settled the question of whether …

Community - Based Participatory Research With Hispanic/Latino Leaders And Members, Mary Grace Amendola

The Qualitative Report

Hispanic/Latinos (H/L) are being studied for healthcare disparities research utilizing community - based participatory research (CBPR). CBPR’s active participation of community members and researchers suggests improvement in community health. Yet there are no known studies that inductively investigated the lived experience of H/L community leaders and members with CBPR using interpretive phenomenology. Data were obtained from observations, field notes, biographical interviews, individual interviews and focus groups. The findings supported that community members wanted to collaborate with researchers utilizing the C BPR approach so that culturally sensitive interventions can be created to encourage health - seeking behaviors in their community

The Number Of States And The Economics Of American Federalism, Steven G. Calabresi, Nicholas Terrell Feb 2013

The Number Of States And The Economics Of American Federalism, Steven G. Calabresi, Nicholas Terrell

Florida Law Review

In 1789, it was possible to speak of a federation of distinct states joined together for their mutual advantage, but today, it is rather the nation that is divided into subnational units. What caused this shift in focus from the states to the federal government? Surely, the transformation from a collection of thirteen historically separate states clustered along the Atlantic seaboard to a group of fifty states largely carved out of federal territory has played a role. Building on previous analysis of the economics of federalism, this Article considers the dynamic effects of increasing the number of states on the …
