Imagination And Experience: An Integrative Framework, Mark Fettes Feb 2013

Imagination And Experience: An Integrative Framework, Mark Fettes

Democracy & Education

Three variations of experience identified in the educational literature entail different ways of thinking about and developing learners’ imaginations. The relationship between these different imaginative modes resembles shifts between different kinds of understanding in Kieran Egan’s theory of imaginative development. From this theoretical collision, a new framework emerges that gives greater weight to the connections between experience and imagination, and that may help to guide new forms of democratic educational practice.

Maria Do Mar Castro Verala, Nikita Dhawan, And Antke Engel, Eds. Hegemony And Heteronormativity: Revisiting “The Political” In Queer Politics. Farnham, Burlington, Vt: Ashgate, 2011. 224 Pp., Stuart Richards

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: Maria do Mar Castro Varela, Nikita Dhawan and Antke Engel’s Hegemony and Heteronormativity presents a very complex analysis of “the political” in queer politics. From the outset, the editors define the object of study, “wherein ‘the political’ does not denote the sphere of politics, but the processes, regimes or logics of language, knowledge and power inherent in doing politics” (1; their emphasis). The collection of essays expands and creates a dialogue between two significant categories of queer politics: hegemony and heteronormativity. Indeed, it is the aim of this collection to rethink queer theory in terms of these concepts, “so …

Student Collaboration And Teacher‐Directed Classroom Dynamic Assessment: A Complementary Pairing, Kristin Davin, Richard Donato

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article examines collaboration during small‐group tasks with young language learners studying Spanish. After five days of classroom dynamic assessment (DA) targeting WH‐question formation, students worked in small groups on a collaborative writing task. This research sought to determine whether learners were able to mediate their peers during this task and if so, whether this mediation might be traced back to participation in classroom DA. Findings revealed that students drew upon collective knowledge to complete the task. While the learners did not appropriate forms of mediation used during DA, characteristics such as repetition and first language usage appeared in peer …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Through the past two decades, Human Computer Interactions emerged as a focal area of computer science research and development. Human Computer Interaction is about designing computer systems that support people so that they can carry out their activities productively and safely. And this has a role in playing in the design and development of all kinds of system. Although advances in technology tend to drive advances in field, technology needs to be usable as well as functional. According to Terry Winogard (1990)” Except for special things like computer games, people don’t use computer because they want to use computer, they …

Moral Emotions In Nonhuman Animals, Daniel A. Hampikian Feb 2013

Moral Emotions In Nonhuman Animals, Daniel A. Hampikian

Open Access Dissertations

I defend the view that some nonhuman animals can be morally motivated by empathic emotions. First, I argue that we are justified in ascribing to some animals phenomenal consciousness, the conceptual capacities to represent values and intentional objects, and the relevant behavioral and physiological similarities to human emotional states. Subsequently, I argue for a model of basic emotions that I call the Awareness of Physiological Vehicles (APV) account. According to the APV account, an animal’s emotion is best thought of as a focal awareness of an intentional object and a peripheral awareness of sensations of physiological states as indicators of …

The Use And Development Of Academic Vocabulary In L2 Writing: A Longitudinal Investigation, John Turlik Feb 2013

The Use And Development Of Academic Vocabulary In L2 Writing: A Longitudinal Investigation, John Turlik

All Works

Recent years have seen the increasing use of vocabulary frequency lists such as 'the 1,000 most frequent words in English' to assess the difficulty of reading texts, as well as the development of learners' language. This paper reports on a longitudinal study of university essays in English, written every ten weeks under examination conditions, over a period of two years by 42 Arabic-speaking students. The expectation was that students' use of academic vocabulary would begin with those words used most frequently in academic English and, as their vocabulary developed, draw increasingly from less commonly-used words. The evidence from this study …

Statutes In Common Law Courts, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski Feb 2013

Statutes In Common Law Courts, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski

Journal Articles

The Supreme Court teaches that federal courts, unlike their counterparts in the states, are not general common law courts. Nevertheless, a perennial point of contention among federal law scholars is whether and how a court’s common law powers affect its treatment of statutes. Textualists point to federal courts’ lack of common law powers to reject purposivist statutory interpretation. Critics of textualism challenge this characterization of federal courts’ powers, leveraging a more robust notion of the judicial power to support purposivist or dynamic interpretation. This disagreement has become more important in recent years with the emergence of a refreshing movement in …

Environmental And Social Sustainability Impacts Of Teaching And Research: Some Ideas, Rowena H. Scott

"One aim of Australia’s 2009 National Action Plan for Education for Sustainability is to equip all Australians with the awareness, knowledge, skills, values and motivation to live sustainably in order that future generations can meet their needs. Despite the efforts of ECU Green Office Program, their brief is not to address curriculum issues so consequently this paper aims to be a starting point for discussions that examine how we at Edith Cowan University teach and conduct research that considers their environmental, social, cultural and economic implications. This paper focuses on two main issues: how ECU units teach in environmentally sustainable …

"Postgraduate business education has become a very important financial stream for most tertiary institutions. However, what is becoming increasingly evident is that the assumption of good or even adequate academic competence, based on IELTS scores, is incorrect and that in reality many international students struggle to meet the academic standards and expectations of the overseas universities. This manifests itself in many ways; ultimately students fail units and have negative learning experiences. At best they reflect competencies of surface learners rather than those of deep learners. This paper reports on interim results of a pilot study that embedded an academic skills …
