The Duality Of Presence And Absence In Al-Mutanabbi's Poetry (An Analytical Study), Maitham Razzaq Jabbar Al-Zurfi

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

This study examines the duality of presence and absence in Al-Mutanabbi’s poetry as a central framework for understanding his poetic, philosophical, and existential vision. The research aims to explore how these opposing yet interconnected concepts shape the poet’s perception of self, authority, and human existence. This study employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach by analyzing selected poems through thematic interpretation, stylistic analysis, and semiotic reading. The analysis focuses on figurative language, rhetorical structures, symbolism, irony, and contrast as poetic strategies used to construct meaning. The findings reveal that presence in Al-Mutanabbi’s poetry is represented through self-affirmation, heroism, power, and intellectual superiority, …

The Single Story In Translation: Domestication As A Tool Of Colonial And Neocolonial Hegemony, Younes Aich Apr 2026

The Single Story In Translation: Domestication As A Tool Of Colonial And Neocolonial Hegemony, Younes Aich

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

This study examines how translation has been used to sustain colonial and neocolonial hegemony by producing reductive representations of the East. Drawing on Adichie’s notion of the “single story” and postcolonial translation theory, it argues that domestication may function as a hegemonic strategy when foreign texts are adjusted to the expectations, values, and stereotypes of the dominant target culture. Such practice constructs the West as the universal model of progress while positioning Eastern cultures as inferior, exotic, or dependent. The study uses a qualitative hermeneutic design to interpret selected concepts and examples related to colonial discourse, neocolonial representation, domestication, and …

Patient Experience Journal

Limited English Proficiency is known as an independent driver of disparities in patient's access to healthcare and their healthcare outcomes. The Joint Commission standards require that health systems document language services delivery to patients with limited English proficiency in a systematic way. Our health system had not historically utilized a methodical system for documenting language services utilization prior to the launch of this initiative. By utilizing a Lean Six Sigma approach, a project team comprised of leaders from interpreter services, operations, data analytics, and data informatics codesigned an Epic SmartForm data collection instrument and series of Tableau dashboards to monitor …

Weight stigma research is needed in diverse populations. Two populations that may experience compromised healthcare in New Brunswick, Canada's only officially bilingual province (English/French), are Francophone New Brunswickers and newcomers to Canada. As such, this study explores the experiences of higher-weight (Body Mass Index ≥ 30) adults (≥ 18 years of age) who also identify as primarily Francophone or as having moved to Canada ≤ 5 years ago in and out of healthcare contexts. Participants were interviewed according to a semi-structured interview guide face-to-face, by telephone, or video-call two times, at 2-to-3-month intervals. Interviews included questions about experiences and effects …

Navigating Medical Ambiguity: A Patient's Perspective On Communication, Timing, And Risk, J. Hansen Apr 2026

Navigating Medical Ambiguity: A Patient's Perspective On Communication, Timing, And Risk, J. Hansen

Patient Experience Journal

This essay recounts the experience of navigating re-vaccination decisions after an initial diagnosis of vaccine-associated myocarditis. A diagnosis later contested by other specialists. It is not a tale of medical error, but of diagnostic ambiguity and divergent clinical reasoning. My intent is to show how, in the absence of consensus, a patient was compelled to assume a central role in adjudicating between competing medical narratives. Recommendations are offered to make medical advice more available to patients and bridge a growing gap between medicine and the public.

The Make And Model Of A Hero: Training And Transformation In Sundiata:An Epic Of Old Mali, Anna Stowe Apr 2026

The Make And Model Of A Hero: Training And Transformation In Sundiata:An Epic Of Old Mali, Anna Stowe

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper examines Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali through the lens of the hero’s journey, tracing the boyhood, exile, and transformation of Sundiata as he prepares to restore Mali to peace and prosperity. Leadership is both an individual calling and a communal responsibility; true rulers depend not only on personal strength but also on the support and guidance of others. While in exile, Sundiata receives military, political, and supernatural training, all of which shape his identity as the epic’s hero and equip him to achieve his destiny. These trials mirror the stages of growth and preparation found in scripture. …

Where Are They Now?: Chinese Tomboys In The Us, (Fe)Male Masculinity, And Recentering Home Via Queer Migration, Xinyan Mia Tong

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

T/TB (tomboy), as a sociolinguistic category that denotes masculine lesbians in the Chinese-speaking world, has long been criticized by community members and Western academics alike for being too heteronormative and reductive in comparison to the post-identity queer figure in Western gender/sexual discourses. Through the detailed life histories of three T/TBs who moved to the United States for college, I problematize this East/West binary within queer geography and present a more nuanced framework to understanding queer migration and queer globalization. I argue that my interlocutors, while highly diverse in their subjectivities, all strategically evoke the United States, as both a physical …

80 Mots Du Viêtnam: Anna Moï, Vietnamese-French Relation, And “Littérature-Monde”, Ngọc Hải Nguyễn '26

Global Languages Research Symposium

On March 15, 2007, 44 different Francophone authors signed the manifesto Towards a World Literature in French (Simon trs., 2010), following the publication of their anthology of essays published under the same title (Pour une littérature-monde en français, LeBris et Rouaud dir., 2007). The manifesto claims the end of the division between French literature and Francophone literature—being the division between French literature by authors born in France and by authors not born in France, but uses the French language due to various reasons (primarily colonialism and education). However, the manifesto did fall into what some might deem a heated debate, …

Reflections On Language And Translation: Toward A "Translation Turn" In Archival Studies, Fiorella Foscarini Apr 2026

Reflections On Language And Translation: Toward A "Translation Turn" In Archival Studies, Fiorella Foscarini

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

As the dominant lingua franca, the English language acts as an invisible, hegemonic force that exerts a strong influence over the framing of the global world. By using English unreflexively in research, education, and professional cross-cultural exchanges, we may unwittingly support unequal power structures, the homogenization of research, and the marginalization of traditions and knowledge systems based on languages other than English. In most cases where translation is involved, the translating act is treated as a fait accompli or a mere technical process, without acknowledging that exact equivalence is impossible to achieve, and that translation has important epistemological, methodological, …

Russian Linguistic Policy In The Post-Soviet World, Payton G. Deichler Apr 2026

Russian Linguistic Policy In The Post-Soviet World, Payton G. Deichler

The Dialogue

This paper examines the role of the Russian language as an instrument of soft power in the post-Soviet space, arguing that its geopolitical influence extends beyond demographic prevalence to the institutional frameworks through which it is promoted and mediated. Rather than functioning solely as a neutral medium of communication, Russian operates as an infrastructural component of influence that shapes access to media ecosystems, educational systems, and professional mobility across former Soviet republics. Drawing on the concept of a “Monopoly of Interpretation,” this study proposes that the centralized, state-linked promotion of Russian enables the consolidation of political narratives within shared linguistic …

Cross-Cultural Neuropsychological Testing: A Behavioral Item Analysis Of The Party Subtest From The Muns Battery Administered To Argentinian And U.S. Participants, Arwen A. Miranda, Alberto Luis Fernandez

Honors Thesis

In response to prevalent cultural bias in neuropsychological testing, cross-cultural tests (CCTs) were developed for accessibility across cultures through the use of “universal” stimuli. The Multicultural Neuropsychological Scale (MUNS) is a CCT developed to be appropriate across education levels, cost-effective and capable of assessing cognitive functions. The MUNS consists of seven subtests, including the Party subtest, which measures executive functioning by instructing participants to organize a party on a map. During this activity, participants purchase items such as food while remaining mindful of a 100-coin budget and minimizing travel distance. The present study examined whether the Party subtest functions comparably …

Ai Mistakes: "Confabulation" And Abduction, Not "Hallucination", Stephen M. Mcjohn, Ian Mcjohn

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

"Hallucination" has become the common term for errors by AI systems, yet it implies a misleading analogy to human perception. LLM's process tokens. They do not have conscious experience or conscious perception. A hallucination is an experience, and (to our knowledge, to date) LLM's do not experience anything. This paper suggests that legal scholars follow the lead of a small number of AI researchers who have suggested that "confabulation" is a more accurate term, a metaphor grounded in psychology. People confabulate when they unknowingly invent spurious explanations or facts. We then take this terminological question and stretch it into a …

This study employs the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) to identify the critical factors and their degree of relevance to the vehicle emission process. Its innovation lies in the potential to blend ambiguity and uncertainty with the established AHP. FAHP transforms information into a defuzzification state through signal-to-noise ratios, normalization, and pairwise comparison. The principal parameters considered are revenue, sold packing units, CAGR, packing materials, consumption, and CO2 emissions (A, B, C, D, E, and F, respectively). From the normalized defuzzified weight result, consumption (Parameter E) is the best (normalized weight, 0.8685917), while CO2 emissions (Parameter F) was the worst …
