The Discourses Of Vincent Chase, Eric Wolf
The Discourses Of Vincent Chase, Eric Wolf
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
There is a common notion that those who make it big, whether it be as a professional athlete, a Grammy award-winning artist, or as an A-list actor, forget where they came from. Fame and fortune go to their heads and they become completely different people than they once were prior to their fame. Though fictional, one could make the argument that Vincent Chase, the protagonist of H.B.O.'s critically acclaimed series Entourage, underwent this drastic shift as the show progressed. One way of analyzing this possible alteration is …
Taming The Shrew Within: Internalized Misogyny In Shakespeare's 1 Henry Iv, Sarah Christy
Taming The Shrew Within: Internalized Misogyny In Shakespeare's 1 Henry Iv, Sarah Christy
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
Surely, the frequent occurrence of "margin" and all of its forms in these examinations of 7 Henry IV is not accidental; the play's female characters are undoubtedly marginalized. Only three appear, and so to begin with, the male characters predominate. Because the depictions of men are more readily available, the men themselves are diverse: their personalities, views, and behaviors completely individual. For the women, however, there is very little room for diversity; while there are undeniable differences amongst the three women presented—while they come from different backgrounds, …
Restrictive Love And The Resulting Disguises, Ashley Kravitz
Restrictive Love And The Resulting Disguises, Ashley Kravitz
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the article's first paragraph.
The father-daughter relationship dynamic often determines the actions and behavior taken by women in fairy tales. In Charles Perrault's seventeenth-century fairytale, "Donkeyskin", the theme of incest runs throughout the tale, showing the king's inappropriate lust for his daughter. He longs for his daughter, driving her to use tactful cleverness through disguise to escape this twisted love. Another tale, an Egyptian folktale entitled, "The Princess in the Suit of Leather", portrays the same story of a father's unseemly lust and twisted attachment to his daughter after his wife's death. In …
Urbanization, Suburbanization, And Gentrification: An Application Of The Turner Thesis To Modern Population Trends, Erin Boyce
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the article's first paragraph.
When the Census Bureau declared the Frontier closed in 1890, historian Frederick Jackson Turner lamented that the arena in which American character, democracy and uniqueness had been forged was forever lost. His speech, "The Significance of the Frontier in American History" cemented the popular belief espoused by Thomas Jefferson and countless others that America was rooted in agriculture and its ties to the land.

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Traditional neuroanatomic models of language comprehension have emphasized a core language network situated in peri-Sylvian cortex. More recent evidence appears to extend the neuroanatomic network beyond peri-Sylvian cortex to encompass other aspects of sentence processing. In this study, we evaluate the neuroanatomic basis for processing the ambiguity in doubly-quantified sentences. For example, a sentence like "All the dogs jumped in a lake" can be interpreted with a collective interpretation (e.g., several dogs jumping into a single lake) or a distributive interpretation (e.g., several dogs each jumping into a different lake). In Experiment 1, we used BOLD fMRI to investigate neuroanatomic …

Indigenous Perspectives On Contemporary Native Art, Indigenous Aesthetics And Representation, John Paul Rangel
Indigenous Perspectives On Contemporary Native Art, Indigenous Aesthetics And Representation, John Paul Rangel
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
In this dissertation I examine and posit Indigenous perspectives on contemporary Native art, Indigenous aesthetics and issues of representation. Contemporary Native art at this moment is best described as an expression of values—personal or communal or cultural—with an attention to material conditions and current issues. I employ Indigenous methodologies and Tribal Critical Race theory as a critical framework to intervene in the dominant discourse on Native art. This research focuses on the narratives and perspectives of eight artists who represent a cross-section of the current state of Native arts production in North America drawing from the local Native arts community …
Shinto And Buddhist Metaphors In Departures, Yoshiko Okuyama
Shinto And Buddhist Metaphors In Departures, Yoshiko Okuyama
Journal of Religion & Film
Cinematic language is rich in examples of religious metaphors. One Japanese film that contains religious “tropes” (figurative language) is the 2008 human drama, Departures. This paper focuses on the analysis of religious metaphors encoded in select film shots, using semiotics as the theoretical framework for film analysis. The specific metaphors discussed in the paper are the Shinto view of death as defilement and Buddhist practices associated with the metaphor of the journey to the afterlife. The purpose of this paper is to augment the previous reviews of Departures by explicating these religious signs hidden in the film.

America's Need For A Foreign Language Requirement, Vanessa Cardinale
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the article's first paragraph.
In the world we live in today, international relations are something that Americans should take extremely seriously. September 11, 2001 completely changed the way Americans see the world and the way the world sees us. Now more than ever, America should be teaching its youth about foreign affairs and governments. The first step in this process would be teaching a foreign language.

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the article's first paragraph.
Holy Cowabunga, dude! You need to, like, stop having a cow, man! Does this sound familiar? In considering the extreme number of slang expressions that have infiltrated present- day English, it is no surprise that sayings such as these are so widely recognized. Cartoon shows and their characters have had an especially strong impact on the use and promotion of slang throughout the past century. With characters such as Bart Simpson and Beavis and Butthead leading the way, it has become nearly impossible to hold a conversation without using …

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects
Students that study a foreign language in high school generally graduate with a solid base in reading and writing the language; however, speaking it remains a struggle. This project was designed to develop a series of activities and a framework on which future activities can be based. The activities are meant to engage students and help them practice speaking so as to increase their oral proficiency. By doing such activities two or three times a week, students can become more accustomed to speaking a foreign language and will gain confidence. They will also have practice using vocabulary relevant to the …

Impacting Student Attitudes Toward Mathematics Through Project-Based Learning: A Multiple Intelligence Based Approach, Andre Wade
Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity
Reflecting on my first year of teaching, the number one hindrance to my students’ progress in mathematics seemed to be that my students strongly disliked the subject. Therefore in my second year of teaching at a diverse Catholic school in New England, I completed an action research project that implemented project-based learning (PBL) based on Multiple Intelligence (MI) theory into my mathematics classroom. I wanted to to see if the experience would first, impact student attitudes to make students like math more, and second, if PBL would allow students to see mathematics as applicable to the real world. Therefore, this …
