Never A Yellow Bird, Always A Blue Bird: Ethnodrama Of A Latina Learner’S Educational Experiences In 1950 - 60s South Texas, Norman Gillen, Kakali Bhattacharya
The Qualitative Report
This article is a response to calls for more first - person accounts from researchers using narrative formats to interpret data. The authors examine the practice of ethnodrama as a means of exploring and analyzing the experiences of a Latina public - school student in a small South Texas coastal town during the 1950s and 1960s as she attempted to negotiate multiple ethnic spaces while resisting traditional behavioral expectations representative of that period. Through coding and synthesizing the participant’s responses, the researchers established theme s on which to base the composition of three dramatic scenes for purposes of data representation. …

Development Of An Integrated Fis-Dea Method For Sustainable Supplier Selection In Manufacturing / Atefeh Amindoust, Amindoust Atefeh
Student Works (2010-2019)
Supplier selection is an important area of decision making in manufacturing, especially for large and medium companies – either multinational (MNCs) or local. As sustainability in terms of preserving physical environment and developing long-term relationships between the partners in carrying out of manufacturing activities has gained world-wide focus, this dimension deserves due attention in selecting the competent suppliers in today’s companies. Literatures show that the past researches done in this area didn’t adequately discern and put the sustainable issues in a form of generic model. In real life applications, the importance of the various sustainable supplier selection criteria differ from …
The Evolution Of Broadway Musical Entertainment, 1850-2009: Interlingual And Intermedial Interference, Dj Kaiser
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Itamar Even-Zohar's polysystem theory: 1978, revised 1990) postulates that translated literature occupies a central location in a young literature and serves an "innovative" function until the literature matures, at which time translated literature is pushed to the periphery and is "conservative": approximating the native repertoire). Using a "distant reading" approach: Moretti 2005), this project explores the position of both translated and adapted literature in the evolution of Broadway musical entertainment. Using an original database of more than four thousand productions of musical entertainment from professional New York playhouses associated with the history of Broadway from 1850 through 2009, various waves …

The Role Of The U.S. Courts Of Appeals In Legal Development: An Empirical Analysis, Rachael K. Hinkle
The Role Of The U.S. Courts Of Appeals In Legal Development: An Empirical Analysis, Rachael K. Hinkle
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
What are the causes and consequences of legal development? In recent years courts scholars have begun to address these broad and challenging questions, yet there is still much work to be done. The intermediate level of the federal court system: a.k.a., circuit courts) provides an institutional context replete with opportunities to extend our theoretical and empirical understanding of legal development. My dissertation takes advantage of these opportunities in three ways. First, I explore legal constraint by comparing citation to and treatment of circuit court precedents. A precedent is binding in its own circuit, but merely persuasive in other circuits. Consequently, …

Inviting Twenty-First Century Students To The Eighteenth-Century Party, Kathryn Strong Hansen
Inviting Twenty-First Century Students To The Eighteenth-Century Party, Kathryn Strong Hansen
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
This article describes a classroom activity that increases students’ connection to literary characters, and by extension, texts. The activity, constructed as a party attended by literary characters, tasks students with taking on the point of view of one character in an assigned novel. This can encourage a student to see the viewpoint of a character that differs from him or her in gender, social status, or any other category of difference. In heightening students’ relationship to eighteenth-century characters, I argue, instructors can bring the eighteenth century closer to contemporary students as well as increase students’ sensitivity to viewpoints that differ …

Educative Supports For Teachers In Middle School Mathematics Curriculum Materials: What Is Offered And How Is It Expressed?, Lorraine Males
Educative Supports For Teachers In Middle School Mathematics Curriculum Materials: What Is Offered And How Is It Expressed?, Lorraine Males
Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series
In this talk I will present the findings from my study of the educative nature of four middle school mathematics curriculum materials. Educative curriculum materials are materials for Grades K‐12 that are “intended to promote teacher learning in addition to students’” (Davis & Krajcik, 2005, p. 3). I particularly investigated the opportunities for teacher learning embedded within four middle school curricular series in the areas of introduction to variable and geometric transformations. Drawing on the work on educative curriculum materials from science education (Davis & Krajcik, 2005) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1985), I investigated opportunities to learn by examining …

Valuing Students’ Cultural Experiences And Linguistic Abilities In The Classroom, Tynisha Meidl, Christopher Meidl
Valuing Students’ Cultural Experiences And Linguistic Abilities In The Classroom, Tynisha Meidl, Christopher Meidl
Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education
English Language Learners (ELL) and students represented in culturally diverse communities are the fastest growing groups in US public schools (Samway & McKeon, 2007). Mainstream classrooms often struggle to meet the needs of Linguistically and Culturally Diverse (LCD) students, trying to connect instruction to students’ linguistic backgrounds or cultural experiences (Darder, 1991). Unfortunately, the education of LCD students has become exercises of “drill and kill” and highly scripted instruction (Darder & Torres, 2004). This article explores reasons why students’ cultural experiences and linguistic abilities are not recognized in mainstream classrooms in an era of high-stakes testing. Additionally, the article will …

Critical Conversations: Developing White Teachers For Diverse Classrooms, Omobolade O. Delano-Oriaran Ph.D, Tynisha D. Meidl Ph.D
Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education
Many White, middle-class educators experience challenges as they attempt to teach in racially diverse classrooms. This article explores and challenges a widely held and often unexamined conception of White in-service teachers as learners about issues of diversity and equity vis-à-vis voluntary professional development. This study sought to examine how White in-service teachers explore their racial identity and how identity awareness influences their ability to successfully meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students. Participants were part of a voluntary book discussion professional-development program offered by a community multicultural center in collaboration with surrounding school districts. The findings of …
The Language Of Texting: Altering English Or A Language Of Its Own?, Elizabeth Gorney
The Language Of Texting: Altering English Or A Language Of Its Own?, Elizabeth Gorney
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
Because language is so intangible, changes over time are not only unavoidable, they also are common and expected. Language is not the same today as it was when it originated; it is not the same today as it was last week. Phrases become "so yesterday" and expressions from a hundred years ago have been entirely eliminated from our language. There are many reasons for changeculture, technology, events in history- but the most influential catalyst for change in today's era is technology. Things like email, texting, and Facebook …
