Advocacy In Health Proceedings In New York State, Kia C. Franklin Apr 2013

Advocacy In Health Proceedings In New York State, Kia C. Franklin

Touro Law Review

Individuals and communities navigating the healthcare system without an advocate often experience devastating outcomes and become burdened with unnecessary costs. These negative outcomes undermine the very utility of our healthcare system. The creation of a legal right to counsel for individuals with critical health related claims would meet an important and unmet need in our health and legal systems by empowering patients, improving the quality of health for many, and preventing unnecessary costs to the health care system.

A dedicated group of healthcare advocates, lawyers, public policy analysts, and other concerned individuals gathered together at Touro Law Center to strategize …

The Role Of Doctor-Patient Race Concordance In U.S. Health Disparities, Sarah Simon Apr 2013

The Role Of Doctor-Patient Race Concordance In U.S. Health Disparities, Sarah Simon

Theses and Dissertations

It has been established that much of the disparity in health outcomes between blacks and whites can be explained by accounting for education and income. Once education and income have been taken into consideration, research has found racial disparities in health outcomes for low-income populations are small, and in some cases no longer significant. For middle and upper income populations, however, a significant racial disparity in health outcomes persists even after accounting for education and income. Seeking to explain this variation, I analyze the literature concerning health disparities, race and class, the prevalence and distribution of black physicians, and issues …

Effects Of Reading Strategies And The Writing Process With Written Recasts On Second Language Achievement, Helen Ramirez, Don Jones Apr 2013

Effects Of Reading Strategies And The Writing Process With Written Recasts On Second Language Achievement, Helen Ramirez, Don Jones

Administrative Issues Journal

This study examined the effectiveness of teaching methods used with a second language reading and writing unit. This investigation addressed discrepancies between assessment scores in the four communicative language skill areas of students in beginning-level Spanish classes at a suburban middle school. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to explore how literacy-based practices that included teaching strategies used with reading, teaching use of the writing process with a writing assignment, and teacher employment of written recasts affect second language achievement. The theoretical base of the study consisted of second language theories and hypotheses that explained how second language learning …

The Application Of Second Language Acquisition Theory To New Testament Greek Pedagogy, Josiah P. Wegner Apr 2013

The Application Of Second Language Acquisition Theory To New Testament Greek Pedagogy, Josiah P. Wegner

Senior Honors Theses

The effect of outdated NT Greek pedagogy has left many seminary students ill-equipped to properly exegete using the NT Greek language. Many seminary students graduate with a firm knowledge of syntactic rules, but they are still unable to read the NT text without having to constantly consult a Greek grammar and dictionary. Even though the current style of teaching has been used for many years, research in second language acquisition has exposed that the traditional translation method has many flaws. One of these researchers, Stephen Krashen, has identified that the key to language competence is not learning vocabulary and grammar …

In-Course Language Support: Working Towards Best Practice, Anne Harris, Joanna Ashton Apr 2013

In-Course Language Support: Working Towards Best Practice, Anne Harris, Joanna Ashton

eCULTURE

In Australian universities, student demographics over the past decade have changed markedly. The main shift is an increase in the number of students who have English as an additional language or are the first in their family to enter higher education. As student populations diversify, many universities are recognising that language and academic support programs require different emphases. For years, the fundamentals of learning support revolved around centrally run workshops and individual consultations but recently, a number of universities have moved towards contextualised in-course support. This paper looks at a similar shift. In 2010, learning support at Edith Cowan University …

Programming Literacy Needs To Be A Core Content Standard: A Case Study Of Teaching 7th And 8th Grade Students Computer Programming, Dr. Geoffrey Wright

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Just as typing has replaced calligraphy and hand-writing as the most common form of written language, programming is ready to replace many domains of the English language. Regardless of whether you perceive this, as negative or positive, programming is how many students are communicating. In a recent study (paper) a teacher found the following grammatical errors (as she defined them): ttyl, sg, L2G, 2G2BT, 2M2H, 404, 411, 511, LOL (double meaning), NMU, N1, W@, WU
