Local Knowledge: Worcester Area Community-Based Research
What are the challenges faced in treating Hypertension in the Worcester African Immigrant Community?
This study investigates the relationship between the understanding of high blood pressure, and the ability and willingness to modify behavior among African patients at Akwaaba, a free health clinic in Worcester, Massachusetts. In this research, our team specifically explores how the understanding of lifestyle risk factors of hypertension, such as diet, exercise, and levels of stress, influence the willingness and ability to modify behavior among African born patients at Akwaaba. What become clear was that language barriers, cultural differences, and approach to health care within the …
The Effects Of Ipads On The Independent Reading Of High School Students With Learning Disabilities, Jaime Macewen
The Effects Of Ipads On The Independent Reading Of High School Students With Learning Disabilities, Jaime Macewen
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not the use of iPads for independent reading would enhance the reading motivation of ninth grade students with learning disabilities as measured by number of pages read and students' self-reported interest in reading in response to a survey. Its purpose is also to determine whether they would prefer reading on an iPad over reading traditional books. This study used a pretest-posttest group design. The participants were nineteen students in ninth grade. The participants all receive special education services in the resource center classroom. They are enrolled in an intensive reading …

Narrowing The Gap Between Imaginary And Real Artifacts: A Process For Making And Filming Diegetic Prototypes, Al Hussein Wanas
Narrowing The Gap Between Imaginary And Real Artifacts: A Process For Making And Filming Diegetic Prototypes, Al Hussein Wanas
Theses and Dissertations
Critical Design uses designed artifacts as a critique of consumer culture. However, the complex nature of these artifacts prompted designers to focus on the artifact and present it in an informative, but relatively isolated fashion. The theoretical framework for this thesis is drawn from a similar, yet more recent, design criterion called Design Fiction. The artifacts of Design Fiction are called Diegetic Prototypes: fictional prototypes that function in the social sphere of a film’s structure. This research develops a method for analyzing and creating artifacts, in reference to psychoanalysis theories on the human psyche and perception of objects. It then explores …

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Language has undergone an evolution similar to architecture. Both have been defined through multiple styles which have a tendency to change and reestablish themselves based on popular culture, eventually permeating through society, while subsequently losing momentum and necessity. In the same way that architecture has transitioned through time based on a societal importance of efficiency, economy, and effectiveness, language begins to assume a new oratory standard.

The Inclusive Art Classroom: Time And Strategies, Margaret Harrison Vaughan Miller
The Inclusive Art Classroom: Time And Strategies, Margaret Harrison Vaughan Miller
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Art teachers are required to teach inclusive art classes that provide instruction for general education students and their mentally disabled peers. This study reveals the amount of time an art teacher needs to prepare for and teach the exceptional education students in an inclusive art classroom during school, at school after hours, and at home. Successful teaching strategies are identified. The following recommendations should be taken into consideration: educational institutions should require that preservice teachers take classes on exceptional education, and school districts should provide inservice workshops on teaching inclusive classes to general education teachers, including art teachers.
Citizens Of The Empire: A Molding Of Victorian Childhood Identity, Christopher B. Gallagher
Citizens Of The Empire: A Molding Of Victorian Childhood Identity, Christopher B. Gallagher
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The Victorian Era in Great Britain was a time period of dramatic change. The Industrial Revolution was altering the social and economic fabric of society. Socially, Victorians were confronted with new theories that challenged their religious beliefs. The British Isles were progressing steadily in creating a national identity. Finally, the existence of the British Empire made imperialism a factor that cannot be ignored. Yet, many historians have pointed out that the history of the British metropole itself is often disconnected from the political and cultural history of the Empire. It is within this conversation that this project seeks to find …
Predictors For An Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosis: A Risk Modeling Endeavor, Cristy S. Phillips
Predictors For An Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosis: A Risk Modeling Endeavor, Cristy S. Phillips
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to derive one or more single indicators or sets of correlated indicators that could predict a heightened probability for an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis, a critical first step in the development of a risk-model. Educators need a risk-model that will identify infants and young children with ASD before their symptoms are fully manifested. Such a model would help educators to fulfill their federal mandate to provide timely identification and early-intervention services, improving long-term outcomes for affected children. Fortunately, advanced statistical modeling techniques and extant early-intervention data suggest a solution: Exploratory latent class factor …

Publications and Research
Human language, as well as birdsong, relies on the ability to arrange vocal elements in novel sequences. However, little is known about the ontogenetic origin of this capacity. We tracked the development of vocal combinatorial capacity in three species of vocal learners, combining an experimental approach in zebra finches with an analysis of natural development of vocal transitions in Bengalese finches and pre-lingual human infants and found a common, stepwise pattern of acquiring vocal transitions across species. In our first study, juvenile zebra finches were trained to perform one song and then the training target was altered, prompting the birds …
The Initial Development Of A Measure Of Cultural Competence In School Psychology: The Madison Assessment Of Cultural Competence In School Psychology (Maccs), Nicholas Anthony Curtis
The Initial Development Of A Measure Of Cultural Competence In School Psychology: The Madison Assessment Of Cultural Competence In School Psychology (Maccs), Nicholas Anthony Curtis
Educational Specialist, 2009-2019
School psychology training programs are under increased pressure to train students in a way that emphasizes cultural competence. However, there is not currently an accepted instrument that can measure the cultural competence of students specific to the discipline of school psychology. The current study proposes and explores several adaptions of a proposed instrument to measure cultural competence in school psychology. Adaptions were selected to address problems observed in collecting similar data in a school psychology program. A first study was unsuccessful due to sampling issues; however, a second study was more successful. A sample was selected to exaggerate training differences …
Effects Of Negative Keying And Wording In Attitude Measures: A Mixed-Methods Study, Chris M. Coleman
Effects Of Negative Keying And Wording In Attitude Measures: A Mixed-Methods Study, Chris M. Coleman
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Researchers often collect data on attitudes using “balanced” measurement scales—that is, scales with comparable numbers of positive and negative (i.e., reverse-scored) items. Many previous measurement studies have found the inclusion of negative items to be detrimental to scale reliability and validity. However, these studies have rarely distinguished among negatively-worded items, negatively-keyed items, and items with negative wording and keying. The purpose of the current study was to make those distinctions and investigate why the psychometric properties of balanced scales tend to be worse than those of scales with uniformly positive wording/keying. A mixed-methods approach was employed. In Study 1 (quantitative), …
Measuring Motivation For Coursework Across The Academic Career: A Longitudinal Invariance Study, Makayla Grays
Measuring Motivation For Coursework Across The Academic Career: A Longitudinal Invariance Study, Makayla Grays
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Students must be sufficiently motivated in order to achieve the intended learning outcomes of their college courses. Research in education and psychology has found motivation to be context-dependent. Therefore, students’ motivation is likely to differ from one semester to the next according to which courses students are taking. However, there are also instances in which motivation levels may not change over time. In order to determine whether motivation for coursework changes across the academic career (and, if so, what variables may be related to that change), it is imperative to use a measure of motivation that is theoretically and psychometrically …
Emotion Regulation In European American And Hong Kong Chinese Middle School Children, Kayan Phoebe Wan
Emotion Regulation In European American And Hong Kong Chinese Middle School Children, Kayan Phoebe Wan
Dissertations, 2014-2019
This study explored emotion regulation strategies in middle school European American (N = 54) and Hong Kong Chinese (N =89) children. Based on Gross’s theory (1998), the Survey of Emotion Regulation Strategies was designed to study children’s perceived effectiveness of emotion regulation strategies (deep breathing, thinking positively, situation avoidance, talking and suppression) in three fictitious scenarios associated with sadness, anger, and fear. Five mixed ANOVAs were conducted to evaluate the effect of culture, gender and the type of emotion on each emotion regulation strategy. The results demonstrated that American children considered deep breathing more effective in dealing with anger than …
Data Carving Parser Generation, Benjamin Nathaniel Kelley
Data Carving Parser Generation, Benjamin Nathaniel Kelley
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
As our day to day interaction with technology continues to grow, so does the amount of data created through this interaction. The science of digital forensics grew out of the need for specialists to recover, analyze, and interpret this data. When events or actions, either by accident or with criminal intent create, delete or manipulate data, it is the role of a digital forensics analyst to acquire this data and draw conclusions about the discovered facts about who or what is responsible for the event. This thesisidentifies a gap in the research between data analysis and interpretation. Current research and …
The Use Of Relation Valued Attributes In Support Of Fuzzy Data, Larry Ritchie Williams Jr.
The Use Of Relation Valued Attributes In Support Of Fuzzy Data, Larry Ritchie Williams Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
In his paper introducing fuzzy sets, L.A. Zadeh describes the difficulty of assigning some real-world objects to a particular class when the notion of class membership is ambiguous. If exact classification is not obvious, most people approximate using intuition and may reach agreement by placing an object in more than one class. Numbers or ‘degrees of membership’ within these classes are used to provide an approximation that supports this intuitive process. This results in a ‘fuzzy set’. This fuzzy set consists any number of ordered pairs to represent both the class and the class’s degree of membership to provide a …
