A Biliteracy Dialogue Approach To One-On-One Writing Instruction With Bilingual, Mexican, Immigrant Writers, W. Jason Stegemoller May 2013

A Biliteracy Dialogue Approach To One-On-One Writing Instruction With Bilingual, Mexican, Immigrant Writers, W. Jason Stegemoller

Faculty Publications

This interpretive study explores the writing and writing experiences of 2 bilingual, Mexican, immigrant undergraduates at a US university. Hornberger and Skilton-Sylvester’s (2003) continua model of biliteracy situates writing interactions to understand how students explore and draw on their bilingual and bicultural resources as they develop academic writing in English in the university. Data include questionnaires, literacy history interview-conversations, text-based conversations, student writing, course syllabi, and assignment sheets. Biliteracy dialogues demonstrate how students approached writing. The 1st student, Diego, focused on negotiating what he perceived as appropriate to include in his writing, while the 2nd student, Nicolas, connected to academic …

Shattering The Political Or The Question Of War In Heidegger’S "Letter On Humanism.”, Babette Babich May 2013

Shattering The Political Or The Question Of War In Heidegger’S "Letter On Humanism.”, Babette Babich

Working Papers

Jean Beaufret’s question concerning humanism was “politically” framed on several levels as initially presented to Heidegger.1 Accordingly, Heidegger’s own response was itself political: invoking both technology and the self-same question of science that we remain—and to this day—still “too pious” (in Nietzsche’s words) to be able to frame as a question: the very same question Heidegger develops in his later lectures delivered to the businessmen of Germany, including his Question Concerning Technology. The preoccupation with thinking technology and thinking science remains with Heidegger to the end of his life. Even more significant perhaps (particularly in proximity with Heidegger’s focus …

Similar Goals And Dueling Agendas: Perceptions Of Campus Internationalization And Equity Policy, Kati Bell May 2013

Similar Goals And Dueling Agendas: Perceptions Of Campus Internationalization And Equity Policy, Kati Bell

The Global Education Office | Staff Scholarship

As the implementation of comprehensive internationalization becomes more commonplace at US universities, there are growing concerns about how policies and mandates driving internationalization impact existing campus programs. While comprehensive internationalization policy creates programs that provide educational opportunities to students, these programs on campus are likely to increase inequity. Based on a case study of a university, internationalization and equity policies were critically examined through document analysis and structured interviews. Using an organizational theory lens, this study assessed the level of congruency between the university’s stated goals of equity and internationalization (espoused theories), with the day-to-day practices of the international and …

Examining The Confluence Of Literature And Mathematics Through Art, Sofia Alavosius May 2013

Examining The Confluence Of Literature And Mathematics Through Art, Sofia Alavosius

Senior Honors Projects

Twentieth century novelist and scientist C. P. Snow noted the division of “two cultures,” namely the divide between the sciences and the humanities. Snow argued these were distinctive and separated cultures in the mid 1950s. The “two cultures” are also present during the Renaissance. This appears in the artwork and literary and mathematical texts of the period. The divide between the humanities and sciences is something that we can easily distinguish in the twenty-first century as well.

I use the discourse of C. P. Snow’s “two cultures” to work through this relationship and to explore the cultural perspectives of these …

Experiencing Citizenship In A Globalizing World: The Impact Of Off-Campus Programs, Ryan Owen Williams May 2013

Experiencing Citizenship In A Globalizing World: The Impact Of Off-Campus Programs, Ryan Owen Williams

Political Science - Dissertations

College serves as a critical time in the lives of young adults in the formulation of their identification with citizenship, of their sense of belonging or affiliation. In an era of increasing globalization, this psychological dimension of citizenship requires further research and elaboration. This project seeks to determine if and how the academic and off-campus choices students make in college impact their worldview, their loyalties and sense of responsibility toward others. How far do students' allegiances extend and what experiences in college help to create these bonds and commitments? This study asks whether international experience via study abroad is a …

Feminisms At The Door: Gender And Sex At A Women's College, Susan Chappell Overton May 2013

Feminisms At The Door: Gender And Sex At A Women's College, Susan Chappell Overton

Cultural Foundations of Education - Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation is a qualitative study of early 21st century American female college students' experiences of their gender, sexuality, and racial identities, and of institutional politics as their single-sex college transitioned to co-education. It is an ethnography that utilizes feminist theorizing to understand tensions between feminists of different generations or waves; the complexities of identities and institutions in which gender, sexuality, and race intersect (bell hooks and Kimberle Crenshaw); and the workings of dominant gender and sexual norms (Judith Butler). As the College prepared to `go coed,' the prospect of introducing male bodies into this environment generated rich discourses about …

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

An optimal recommend model for purchasing Chinese IPOs (Initial Public Offerings) based on artificial intelligence method is proposed here. In this paper, we focus on how to get the optimal income in a period of time. In order to avoid the problem of sparsity by separate method, combinations of classification, regression and maximum entropy are adopted to adjust the density of the filters in Double-layer filter model we propose. We improve the accuracy of the forecasting by structuring data in preprocessing, adjusting filters’ density level by the entropy of maximum entropy, the probability of the classification and regression algorithm. The experimental …

Intelligent Control Of Air Compressor Production Process, Gongfa Li, Yuesheng Gu, Jianyi Kong, Guozhang Jiang, Liangxi Xie, Zehao Wu May 2013

Intelligent Control Of Air Compressor Production Process, Gongfa Li, Yuesheng Gu, Jianyi Kong, Guozhang Jiang, Liangxi Xie, Zehao Wu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The air compressor provides not only the required pressure air for the cooling equipment and refrigeration plant, but also the raw material required for the air separation plant. Utilizing the air compressor is extremely extensive in many significant departments such as the metallurgy, oil and chemical industry. The air compressor production process is a time-varying, delay and nonlinear complex system and gas consumption in the industrial field is irregular. Defects in the traditional control method lead to the pressure instability of the compressed air outputted from the air compressor in volatile gas-consumption situations, sometimes a wide range of fluctuation arising. …

The Case Of Brown, Sara Ellingsworth May 2013

The Case Of Brown, Sara Ellingsworth

Colloquy Undergraduate Research Journal

The world is understood through the formation of categories, of defining what something is and what something is not, totalizing an experience, person, or word in order to come to an understanding of its essential meaning. Associations color one’s thoughts whether they are fully acknowledged or not. Without exploring the associations, accumulated through personal experience, that determine one’s view of another individual, there is a danger of marginalizing that person, instead of allowing them to fully inhabit their identity. In the following, I aim to expose the ways in which Richard Rodriguez uses Jacques Derrida’s concept of deconstruction as a …

Perception Of Profanity In Interpersonal Relationships, Ashley Pivaronas, Jessica Benham, Stephanie Melhaff May 2013

Perception Of Profanity In Interpersonal Relationships, Ashley Pivaronas, Jessica Benham, Stephanie Melhaff

Colloquy Undergraduate Research Journal

Swearing is a form of language commonly used, yet its use is oftentimes viewed negatively in certain contexts (Johnson & Lewis, 2010). Swearing is an interesting form of expression because it is not a behavior typically taught or encouraged by authority figures (Thelwall, 2008). Hamilton (1989) emphasized the importance of examining the influence of perception of profanity usage by the receiver of the profanity, noting that perceived obscenity can differ from person to person. This study examined how gender and political orientation influence perception of profanity usage. Relationship to the user of the expletive, as well as the specific expletive …

Answers) characterizes a recent trend in web technologies, often referred to as the social web. This trend highlights the importance of supporting linguistic interactions in people's online information-seeking activities in daily life - something that the web search engines still lack because of the complexity of this hu- man behavior. The presented research consists of an investigation of the information-seeking behavior of digital reference services through analysis of discourse semantics, called dialogue acts, …

Iberian Globalization And The Rise Of Catholic Theology Of Religions In The Xvi Century, Enrico Beltramini Ph.D. May 2013

Iberian Globalization And The Rise Of Catholic Theology Of Religions In The Xvi Century, Enrico Beltramini Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article provides a synthetic view of the historical and theological components that explain how Catholicism came to understand the great religious systems in Asia as doctrinally inferior during the sixteenth century in response to the discovery/invasion of the “New Worlds” by Iberian Europeans.2 A strong emphasis on the universal salvific will of God led Catholic theologians to elaborate a doctrine that ultimately altered Catholicism’s understanding of non-Christian religions. 3 The article suggests that the predominant Catholic view of non-Christian religions has been shaped by a specific theological vision that was raised in sixteenth century Southern Europe. In order to …

Not-So-Sweet Sixteen: When Minor Convictions Have Major Consequences Under Career Offender Guidelines, Andrew Tunnard

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Note looks beyond the circuit split to the larger juvenile justice issues implicated by these sentencing practices. Part II provides a brief overview of the juvenile justice system, juvenile transfer statutes, and the Guidelines. Part III explores the interpretive issues that have led to this circuit split. Part IV explains why resolving this circuit split requires more than choosing one side, and expands the discussion by analyzing the impact of recent judicial and scientific trends on the treatment of juvenile offenders in the adult system. Part V proposes that convictions occurring before the age of eighteen should not be …

Associative Processes In Statistical Learning: Paradoxical Predictions Of The Past, Jennifer Patricia Provyn May 2013

Associative Processes In Statistical Learning: Paradoxical Predictions Of The Past, Jennifer Patricia Provyn

Psychology - Dissertations

The ability to process sequences of input and extract regularity across the distribution of input is fundamental for making predictions from the observed past to the future. Prediction is rooted in the extraction of both frequency- and conditional statistics from the distribution of inputs. For example, an animal hunting for food may consistently return to a particular area to hunt if relative to all other areas visited, that area has the highest frequency of prey. In contrast, humans asked to predict the next word in a sentence must make a prediction based upon higher-order regularities rather than simple frequency statistics …
