The Music Without Melody Of John Cage, The Literature Without Words Of James Joyce, The Art Without A Subject Of Joseph Beuys And The Architecture Without Construction Of Enric Miralles, Irma Arribas
Learn X Design Conference Series
The contradictory is an appearance. Investigating John Cage, James Joyce, Joseph Beuys and Enric Miralles we get to learn that game, constriction, contradiction and chance are homogeneous strategies in the processes based on an artistic evolutionary commitment, being this a key factor to assume established creative processes in a critical realism and a relational aesthetic. Taking reality as it is, not escaping from what the voices mean to be a block for the development and even be open to the dialogue, assume the complexity of the real thing, not shutting oneself up in the known, but being open to the …

A Theoretical Comparison Of Dance/Movement Therapy And Expressive Arts Therapy, Heidi Landgraf
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This theoretical comparison of dance/movement therapy (DMT) and expressive arts therapy (EXA) was created in order to better understand the major principles and concepts behind each field. A brief history of the predecessors of each field was discussed, along with five principles from DMT and five concepts from EXA, as chosen by the writer and based on her preferences in alignment with her personal theory and methodology. The comparison that follows discussed the ways in which both fields converge, diverge, and complement one another. The fields have many points of agreement where there is only subtle difference in language, but …

575 Tlingit Verbs: A Study Of Tlingit Verb Paradigms, Keri M. Eggleston
575 Tlingit Verbs: A Study Of Tlingit Verb Paradigms, Keri M. Eggleston
Linguistics
The Tlingit language, indigenous to Southeast Alaska and neighboring parts of British Columbia and the Yukon territory, is related to the Athabascan languages and the recently extinct language Eyak. Like Athabascan and Eyak, Tlingit verbal morphology is highly complex. The conjugation of Tlingit verbs is unpredictable in certain respects, making the documentation of verb forms from native speakers critical, due to the highly endangered state of the language, and because this has never before been documented for Tlingit. The objectives of the research presented here are twofold: 1) to document complete paradigms for 575 verbs, and; 2) to create a …
Coup D'Oeil, Stephanie Quarto
Coup D'Oeil, Stephanie Quarto
Theses
coup d'oeil translates as "stroke of eye;" it also means a sudden blink or glimpse. It was used as a military term referring to a general's ability to assess with a single glance the advantages and disadvantages of a battlefield. I have titled this thesis coup d'oeil because it addresses the general lack of strategy and analysis by viewers of popular images. Images are omnipresent; they guide and influence humanity. They are not inherently adversarial, but when they assault both our conscious and unconscious minds, they can be extremely influential and destructive. The images in this thesis are similarly made …

Understanding Institutional And Social Factors Relating To The Provisioning Of Water And Sanitation Services In Rural Alaska: Perspectives On Community Self-Reliance From Nine Native Villages Of Interior Alaska, Mercedes FáTima Ochante CáCeres
Arctic and Northern Studies
The global community acknowledges the essential nature of potable water and proper sanitation to the realization of human rights. Since 1959 federal, state and tribal efforts have focused on the goal of equitably providing these services to Alaska Native villages. However, demographic and geographical realities along with limited resources pose formidable challenges to achieving this lofty goal. This thesis explores the challenges to providing safe drinking water in remote Interior Alaska villages and their impact on self-reliance from the perspectives of knowledgeable village residents. Findings from a grounded theory analysis reveal that despite competence and concerted efforts to meet community …

Mother Is Such A Small Part Of The Country, Justin Richard Luzader
Mother Is Such A Small Part Of The Country, Justin Richard Luzader
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Mother is Such a Small Part of the Country is a collection of poems centering on the parent-child relationship, the metaparental relationship of the individual with the figure or image of God, and the important role these relationships play in the formation of the individual. The work is deeply concerned with the incoherence of the self in reaction to powerlessness, and undermines the expectations of the reader through the use of repetition, juxtaposition, and rhetorical questions, as a means of demonstrating the internal forces that were already at work within them trying to identify a cohesive narrative. The poems employ …

Reexamining Two Pesos, Qualitex, & Wal-Mart: A Different Approach…Or Perhaps Just Old Abercrombie Wine In A New Bottle?, Russ Versteeg
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
In Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. v. Samara Bros., Inc., 529 U.S. 205 (2000), the United States Supreme Court held that, in order for a product design to be protectable under § 43(a) of the Lanham Act, the product design must first acquire a secondary meaning. Writing for the Court, Justice Scalia, reasoned that consumers, as a rule, do not expect a product’s design to serve as an indicator of source. The Court stated that product designs, like colors, do not ordinarily operate as source indicators, and that is why the Court established its rule that a product design must acquire a …

Not Gaelic, But Free. Not Free, But Gaelic: The Role Of The Irish Language In Cultural And Political Nationalism In Ireland, Jeanne Buckley
Not Gaelic, But Free. Not Free, But Gaelic: The Role Of The Irish Language In Cultural And Political Nationalism In Ireland, Jeanne Buckley
Library Faculty Scholarship
The title of this paper paraphrases a quote by Patrick Pearse, an Irish poet, writer, nationalist and political activist who was killed by the British for his participation in the Easter 1916 uprising. These words seem fitting for a discussion on the connection between politics and the Irish language in 19th and early 20thcentury Ireland, which this paper addresses.
The Irish language and Ireland’s creation as a nation are intricately linked. After the Great Famine of the 19th century, the rise of cultural nationalism within Ireland, fueled by its writers, convinced the Irish that they existed …
