Validating Estimates Of Latent Traits From Textual Data Using Human Judgment As A Benchmark, Will Lowe, Kenneth Benoit Jun 2013

Validating Estimates Of Latent Traits From Textual Data Using Human Judgment As A Benchmark, Will Lowe, Kenneth Benoit

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Automated and statistical methods for estimating latent political traits and classes from textual data hold great promise, because virtually every political act involves the production of text. Statistical models of natural language features, however, are heavily laden with unrealistic assumptions about the process that generates these data, including the stochastic process of text generation, the functional link between political variables and observed text, and the nature of the variables (and dimensions) on which observed text should be conditioned. While acknowledging statistical models of latent traits to be "wrong," political scientists nonetheless treat their results as sufficiently valid to be useful. …

Contemporary Mosque Architecture In Turkey, Samaa Moustafa Jun 2013

Contemporary Mosque Architecture In Turkey, Samaa Moustafa

Theses and Dissertations

Early in the twentieth century in a quest for national identity and a need for modernity - both are products of the west - Turkey among many other Islamic countries embarked on a massive building project as part of its broader process of modernization. While new forms and styles were incorporated to mirror the modern and civilized vision of the new nation-state, the architecture of the mosque remained condservative with a few exceptions which started to appear only in the last quarter of the same century. The architecture of the medieval mosque has enriched our minds with knowledge about Islamic …

Law And Other-Spaces: Legal Geographies Of The Sinai Peninsula, Tracy Allison Young Jun 2013

Law And Other-Spaces: Legal Geographies Of The Sinai Peninsula, Tracy Allison Young

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula has joined an unfortunate category of what I call ‘Outlaw spaces’: spaces that are characterized and understood as being shaped by crisis, chaos and collapse. Outlaw spaces –which include the “black holes,” the “breeding grounds,” the “security vacuums” and the “no man’s lands” that have proliferated in the post-9/11 era—are constructed through the interplay of both legal and imaginative geographies. Mapping and labeling certain zones as lawless, chaotic and dangerous is deceptive. There is nothing natural about Outlaw spaces and it is not always clear where they begin and where they end. While Outlaw …

Determining Code Choice: Written Slogans During Egyptian Revolution-January 2011, Hanzada Hesham Amin Jun 2013

Determining Code Choice: Written Slogans During Egyptian Revolution-January 2011, Hanzada Hesham Amin

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study aims at depicting the phenomenon of the written code switching between Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and Egyptian colloquial Arabic (ECA) in the written slogans during the Egyptian revolution January 2011. Findings show that ECA clauses comprise a significant percentage as observed from the survey done through the questionnaire and application of Myers-Scotton's (1993) theoretical framework of Matrix Language Frame (MLF). These findings shed light on 1) Merging between MSA and ECA is a distinctive feature in Arabic in many domains 2)The best ways to benefit from this phenomenon in AFL teaching 3)The importance of the event in …

The Effect Of Input-Based And Output-Based Feedback On The Short-Term Development Of Afl Learners' Inter-Language, Heba Mohamed Said El Ramly Jun 2013

The Effect Of Input-Based And Output-Based Feedback On The Short-Term Development Of Afl Learners' Inter-Language, Heba Mohamed Said El Ramly

Theses and Dissertations

This quasi-experimental study was designed to investigate the role and value of two major interactional feedback techniques: recasts and elicitations in communicative Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA) classrooms. A preliminary pilot study based on observing 20 AFL classes suggested to the author of this paper that both recasts and elicitations are widely used in correcting learners' grammatical mistakes, especially subject-verb agreement errors (50%, and 30% for recasts and elicitations, respectively). Accordingly, the purpose of the current classroom-based study is to investigate which of the two feedback strategies, under investigation, could lead to substantial changes in Arabic as a Foreign Language (AFL) …

Real Time Event Detection In Twitter, Xun Wang, Feida Zhu, Jing Jiang, Sujian Li Jun 2013

Real Time Event Detection In Twitter, Xun Wang, Feida Zhu, Jing Jiang, Sujian Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Event detection has been an important task for a long time. When it comes to Twitter, new problems are presented. Twitter data is a huge temporal data flow with much noise and various kinds of topics. Traditional sophisticated methods with a high computational complexity aren’t designed to handle such data flow efficiently. In this paper, we propose a mixture Gaussian model for bursty word extraction in Twitter and then employ a novel time-dependent HDP model for new topic detection. Our model can grasp new events, the location and the time an event becomes bursty promptly and accurately. Experiments show the …

Ambiguity In Literature: Recovering The Life Of Reading, Eden Unger Bowditch Jun 2013

Ambiguity In Literature: Recovering The Life Of Reading, Eden Unger Bowditch

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis contends that ambiguity in meaning performs an essential role in the reader’s response to literature. Ambiguity is not simply an incidental or marginal feature of literary texts but relates in basic ways to the reader’s experience of literature. It is the still point around which a literary text revolves. In examining the function of ambiguity in literary texts, I will show how ambiguity both defines a text as literary and allows it to live and grow through time. The notion of a text is meaningless apart from the reading of it, and, ambiguity, in the unchanging presence of …

Ethnicity Homegrown: How The Lebanese-Argentines In Buenos Aires Construct Ethnicity, Bianca Kemp Jun 2013

Ethnicity Homegrown: How The Lebanese-Argentines In Buenos Aires Construct Ethnicity, Bianca Kemp

Theses and Dissertations

This work explores the construction of ethnicity among the Lebanese-Argentine population of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Although exact figures for the Lebanese population of Argentina are unknown, estimates hover around one and a half million (the national census does not require specification of ethnicity). The majority of these third-, fourth- and fifth-generation Lebanese-Argentines are descendents of early Syro-Lebanese immigrants. These migrants from Greater Syria culturally assimilated to their new “home” at the insistence of the Argentine government and xenophobic elite of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Consequently, constructing a Lebanese-Argentine ethnic identity today means doing so when distance and …

The Language Of Contemporary Egyptian Newspapers: Re-Visiting Badawi's Model, Yasser Elshami Jun 2013

The Language Of Contemporary Egyptian Newspapers: Re-Visiting Badawi's Model, Yasser Elshami

Theses and Dissertations

It is believed that the language of newspapers plays a major role in developing and reflecting the reality of the contemporary language in Egypt, where the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA) have become much closer and the gap between them has shrunk (Badawi, 2012). The linguistic reality described in Badawi's model (1973) demonstrates the structure of the contemporary Egyptian community. He gives a horizontal picture of the spoken language used in Egypt at that time. This study aims at re-visiting Badawi's model and focusing on the language used in opinion articles in the current Egyptian newspapers. …

Corpus-Based Analysis Of Three Arabic Adversative Conjunctions In Current Egyptian Newspapers, Shaemaa Essa Jun 2013

Corpus-Based Analysis Of Three Arabic Adversative Conjunctions In Current Egyptian Newspapers, Shaemaa Essa

Theses and Dissertations

Conjunctions function as cohesive and text building elements in Modern Standard Arabic. They play various semantic and discursive roles at different textual levels: phrase, clause, sentence, paragraph and discourse (Al-Batal, 1990). This study investigates the linguistic behavior of three Arabic adversative conjunctions, namely "innam", baynam, and bal. It draws its data mainly from the sub-corpus of Shruq Columns (2,067,137 words) in the Arabicourpus. A random sample has been collected for "innam" and bal, covering 50% of their instances in the corpus. On the other hand, all the instances of baynam with the adversative meaning have been analyzed due to the …

Arabic Sentence-Level Sentiment Analysis, Amira Magdy Shoukry Jun 2013

Arabic Sentence-Level Sentiment Analysis, Amira Magdy Shoukry

Theses and Dissertations

Sentiment analysis has recently become one of the growing areas of research related to text mining and natural language processing. The increasing availability of online resources and popularity of rich and fast resources for opinion sharing like news, online review sites and personal blogs, caused several parties such as customers, companies, and governments to start analyzing and exploring these opinions. The main task of sentiment classification is to classify a sentence (i.e. review, blog, comment, news, etc.) as holding an overall positive, negative or neutral sentiment. Most of the current studies related to this topic focus mainly on English texts …

Shimoda's Program For Japanese And Chinese Women's Education, Mamiko Suzuki Jun 2013

Shimoda's Program For Japanese And Chinese Women's Education, Mamiko Suzuki

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Shimoda Program for Japanese and Chinese Women's Education" Mamiko Suzuki discusses Western developments as a facet of educational curricula in Japan in the early twentieth century. When in the early 1900s a number of elite Chinese women traveled to Tokyo — for most, their first time abroad — to receive a modern education, it was at Jissen Women's Academy, which was the first to enroll female Chinese students in Tokyo and thus a crucial site for the development of a modern pan-Asian female identity. A central figure in the popularization of women's education and household and hygiene …

Re-Defining South Korean Scholarship And Education Within The Context Of Globalization, Simon C. Estok Jun 2013

Re-Defining South Korean Scholarship And Education Within The Context Of Globalization, Simon C. Estok

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Re-defining South Korean Scholarship and Education within the Context of Globalization" Simon C. Estok discusses effects of globalization on the educational and scholarly goals and realities of Korea. Estok argues that although the transformational impacts of globalization in terms of sports, entertainment, politics, and business in Korea are visible, efforts to produce more globally visible Korean scholarship have been ineffective and counter-productive. Estok shows that the imagined dangers to Korean nationhood are rooted in fears of invasion which have strong historical and contemporary justification. Colonized for a third of the twentieth century, Korea in the twenty-first century …

Current Status Of Shodhgangotri: Repository Of Indian Research In Progress, Shantashree S. Sengupta Jun 2013

Current Status Of Shodhgangotri: Repository Of Indian Research In Progress, Shantashree S. Sengupta

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Across the globe, new research projects are undertaken every year by the researchers. There should be some system which will maintain a database of ongoing research work in order to avoid duplication of research. Some universities and institutions in foreign countries maintain database of research in progress. In India, various universities and institutions like INFLIBNET, DELNET, NASSDOC, IISc, CSIR and University of Mysore etc. have their Electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) repository providing open or login based access to full-text ETDs. But, none of these have any database of Research in Progress. Recently, INFLIBNET introduced ShodhGangotri, which has been built …

Executive Functions And Social Interactions: Developing Social Scenarios, Mackenzie Waite Jun 2013

Executive Functions And Social Interactions: Developing Social Scenarios, Mackenzie Waite

Masters Theses

The aim of this study was to develop a series of vignettes to form the basis for an assessment of executive functions (EFs) for 9 – 12 year old children. Although EFs are necessary for effective social communication and positive social interactions, currently, most EF assessments focus on impersonal activities. Little research exists that incorporates real-time processing using ecologically valid social scenarios. The current study aims to develop realistic scenarios that children could encounter in daily life. Ethnographic interviews were conducted with six participants, who worked in a school with 9-12 year old children, to gain their perspective on social …

Does Selective Migration Explain The Hispanic Paradox?: A Comparative Analysis Of Mexicans In The U.S. And Mexico, Georgiana Bostean Jun 2013

Does Selective Migration Explain The Hispanic Paradox?: A Comparative Analysis Of Mexicans In The U.S. And Mexico, Georgiana Bostean

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Latino immigrants, particularly Mexican, have some health advantages over U.S.-born Mexicans and Whites. Because of their lower socioeconomic status, this phenomenon has been called the epidemiologic “Hispanic Paradox.” While cultural theories have dominated explanations for the Paradox, the role of selective migration has been inadequately addressed. This study is among the few to combine Mexican and U.S. data to examine health selectivity in activity limitation, self-rated health, and chronic conditions among Mexican immigrants, ages 18 and over. Drawing on theories of selective migration, this study tested the “healthy migrant” and “salmon-bias” hypotheses by comparing the health of Mexican immigrants in …

Social And Emotional Learning Competencies And Cross-Thematic Curriculum Related Skills Of Greek Students: A Multifactorial And Triangulation Analysis., Olympia Tsolou, Vasileios Margaritis

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

The cross-thematic curriculum (CTC) for school education has recently been implemented so that the quality of the Greek educational system is improved. This study aimed at assessing social and emotional learning competencies and CTC-related skills of 541 Greek students aged 11–13. Data triangulation was also used for validating these findings, having 145 school teachers reporting their perceptions on students' skills. Both students and teachers reported moderate scores of all students' skills. Multivariate analysis revealed that gender remained a significant predictor for high scores of all students' skills, and that the higher the grade level of the students, the lower the …

Concept Graphs: Applications To Biomedical Text Categorization And Concept Extraction, Said Bleik May 2013

Concept Graphs: Applications To Biomedical Text Categorization And Concept Extraction, Said Bleik

Dissertations

As science advances, the underlying literature grows rapidly providing valuable knowledge mines for researchers and practitioners. The text content that makes up these knowledge collections is often unstructured and, thus, extracting relevant or novel information could be nontrivial and costly. In addition, human knowledge and expertise are being transformed into structured digital information in the form of vocabulary databases and ontologies. These knowledge bases hold substantial hierarchical and semantic relationships of common domain concepts. Consequently, automating learning tasks could be reinforced with those knowledge bases through constructing human-like representations of knowledge. This allows developing algorithms that simulate the human reasoning …

Its main purpose is to study a business potential of this new competitive advantage resource and its productivity paradox. A competitive advantage factor model (CAF model) has been proposed and the structural modelling (SEM) has been performed on the case of a small transitional Slovenian hotel sector. The study contributes to knowledge on ICT competiveness and ICT productivity paradox …

The Intersection Of Aging And Spirituality In The Psychology Of Lesbian, Bisexual, And Queer Women, Bridget Renee Dunnavant May 2013

The Intersection Of Aging And Spirituality In The Psychology Of Lesbian, Bisexual, And Queer Women, Bridget Renee Dunnavant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Although a recent surge in the literature has begun to address the existence and needs of the growing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) older adult population in the United States, there is little established research that has examined their contextualized lived experiences. Having been exposed to triple discrimination through ageism, heterosexism, and sexism, older LBQ women may uniquely experience increased levels of minority stress and decreased psychological wellbeing (Almack, 2010; Gluhoski et al., 1997). Much of this discrimination is grounded in current ‘religious’ discourse in the United States, particularly in the South; at the same time, ample research connects …

Educational Services For Tibetan Students With Disabilities In India: A Case Study, Britany Anne Barnes

Theses and Dissertations

This case study describes services for students with disabilities at Karuna Home in Bylakuppe, Karnataka, India. Karuna Home is a residential rehabilitation center for students with cognitive or physical disabilities whose parents are Tibetan refugees. The study triangulated data from interviews, observations, and school documents to describe educational policies and procedures, and cultural attitudes toward disability. Results show that the Karuna Home program is undergirded by Buddhist thought and theology regarding care and concern for those in difficult circumstances. The school serves students with a range of mild to severe disabilities and is fully staffed, but teachers and other service …

Research On Mppt Methods For Photovoltaic System Based On Microgrid, Jingchu Ji May 2013

Research On Mppt Methods For Photovoltaic System Based On Microgrid, Jingchu Ji

Theses

This thesis introduces some basic concepts about a microgrid. Then it discusses the structure of photovoltaic system (PVS) which contains a solar panel and simplified PV models. Next, it discusses and compares different methods for Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) with PVS. It presents three types of DC-DC converters -- Buck, Boost and Buck-Boost converter. This work proposes to apply a DC-DC converter of Buck-Boost type to make PVS controllable because this type of converter has the largest range for operational region so that it can get the best result on MPPT. Finally, this thesis presents a kind of new …

Deer Impact And Plant Resistance Traits, Xueyang Fan May 2013

Deer Impact And Plant Resistance Traits, Xueyang Fan

Theses

White-tail deer (Odocoileus virginianus), a generalist herbivore, are widely considered to influence ecological communities, ecosystems and human wellbeing by foraging preferentially on certain plant species. Previous research has shown that high deer density can change the relative abundance of tree species in forest communities. Furthermore, some evidence shows that resistance traits of plants can influence plant photosynthetic ability which is an important factor in an ecosystem. The purpose of this experiment is to test whether plant resistance traits can change within species when they are exposed to high levels of deer herbivores. The experiment, established in 1979, enclosed …
