Cutting The Cord To Private Cord Blood Banking: Encouraging Compensation For Public Cord Blood Donations After Flynn V. Holder, Seema Mohapatra
Cutting The Cord To Private Cord Blood Banking: Encouraging Compensation For Public Cord Blood Donations After Flynn V. Holder, Seema Mohapatra
University of Colorado Law Review
This Article argues that the Ninth Circuit's recent ruling in Flynn v. Holder, which allowed compensation for peripheral blood stem cells ("PBSCs") obtained via apheresis] under the National Organ Transplant Act ("NOTA'), also opens up the possibility for compensation for umbilical cord blood ("cord blood"). The holding in Flynn applies to cord blood for several reasons. First, Flynn held that bone marrow was subject to NOTA's prohibition on compensation because bone marrow was explicitly mentioned in the statute. In contrast, no mention of cord blood appears in NOTA or its applicable regulations. Also, the procedure to utilize cord blood was …

Natural killer T cells (NKT) represent a group of CD1d-restricted T-lineage cells that provide a functional interface between innate and adaptive immune responses in infectious disease, cancer, allergy and autoimmunity. There have been remarkable advances in understanding the molecular events that underpin NKT development in the thymus and in the complex array of functions in the periphery. Most functional studies have focused on activation of T cell antigen receptors expressed by NKT cells and their responses to CD1d presentation of glycolipid and related antigens. Receiving less attention has been several molecules that are hallmarks of Natural Killer (NK) cells, but …
Calcifying Nanoparticles As Novel Etiologic Agents Of Idiopathic Preterm Birth And Preterm Premature Rupture Of The Membranes, Lydia Shook
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Preterm birth (PTB) is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. In many cases, preterm birth is preceded by preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PPROM) without any identifiable cause. Pathological calcification, i.e. the deposition of hydroxyapatite (HA) in non-skeletal tissue, has been implicated in degenerative diseases of soft tissue, such as atherosclerosis. Multiple pathogenic mechanisms have been described, including the aberrant aggregation of HA into calcifying nanoparticles (CNPs) and the HA-induced differentiation of mesenchymal cells into osteoblasts in a process called ectopic osteogenesis. The objective of this thesis was to explore the possibility that CNPs form in human …

Biological And Clinical Markers Of Neuronal Injury In Primary And Chronic Hiv-1 Infection, Michael Peluso
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has shifted the neurological manifestations of HIV-1 infection toward mild but debilitating HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). Through two studies, we sought to characterize neuronal injury during primary and chronic HIV infection and to describe its relationship with HAND.
The aim of the first study was to quantify cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and neuroimaging biomarkers of neuronal injury in primary HIV infection (PHI). We compared CSF levels of neurofilament light chain (NFL), tau, and amyloid proteins in 92 subjects with PHI and 25 controls and examined relationships with disease progression and neuroinflammation, neuropsychological testing, and proton-magnetic …

Abstract Peculiar findings of orofacial actinomycosis mimicking the clinical appearance of a tumor of the upper gingiva are reported. An 83-year-old man with bleeding of the gingiva visited our hospital. The clinical diagnosis was a benign gingival tumor, and the lesion was surgically removed. Histologically, the excised specimens showed an ulcerative granuloma lesion covered by bacterial colonies consisting of club-shaped filaments. DNA samples were extracted from paraffin sections and examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Actinomyces species. The PCR products examined by direct DNA sequencing demonstrated the presence of Actinomyces israelii . Finally, a pathological diagnosis was made of …
Finding Still Waters And Green Pastures: Understanding And Reducing Stress In Urban Church Planting, David R. Dunaetz
Finding Still Waters And Green Pastures: Understanding And Reducing Stress In Urban Church Planting, David R. Dunaetz
Great Commission Research Journal
The work of urban church planters is often hindered by high levels of stress. Stress may be viewed as a process that involves stressors and an individual’s perceptions of both the level of threat and his or her ability to deal with the threat. The long-term and the short-term consequences of stress can be attenuated through appropriate coping strategies such as problem solving, prayer, and seeking social support. Recent empirical evidence indicates that exposure to nature is also very effective, a strategy that might be especially beneficial to urban church planters and their ministries. Several practical applications are suggested.
Green Harms Of Green Projects, John Copeland Nagle
Green Harms Of Green Projects, John Copeland Nagle
Journal Articles
This article describes the recent development of renewable energy to examine environmental law’s three contrasting approaches to the green harms of green projects. Sometimes the law allows the green benefit regardless of the green harm. Sometimes the law prohibits the green harm regardless of the green benefit. And sometimes the law allows a balancing of all of the harms and benefits, green or not. Given these options, I argue that the law should not ignore or understate green harms even if they are caused by green projects. There are some types of green harms that no benefit can justify. But …

Is Circumcision Legal?, Peter W, Adler
Is Circumcision Legal?, Peter W, Adler
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
An important, divisive, and unanswered question of American law - and indeed of international law - is whether it is legal to circumcise healthy boys. American medical association and experts assert that circumcision is a common, safe, and relatively painlesss procedure with many medical benefits that exceed the risks. They argue that insurance should pay for it. Some religious organizations argue that circumcision is a sacred religious ritual. In any event, proponents claim that parents have a general and religious right to make the circumcision decision. They can point to the fact that no physician has ever been held liable …

A Case Of Isolated Neurosarcoidosis Associated With Psychosis, Arif Celebi, Sule Deveci, Azize E. Gursoy, Mehmet Kolukisa
Neurosciences
Sarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. Isolated neurosarcoidosis without signs of systemic involvement has rarely been reported in the literature. We report a case of isolated neurosarcoidosis that presented with psychiatric symptoms and headache. Cranial MRI revealed bilateral diffuse high intensity lesions in the deep white matter, with a linear contrast enhancement of perivascular areas. Histological examination of a stereotactic brain biopsy specimen demonstrated noncaseating granulomas. Further research did not reveal any evidence of systemic disease. The patient was treated with corticosteroids and responded well to medical therapy. The diagnosis of isolated neurosarcoidosis is a challenge and …

Development Of Safe And Ready To Eat Frozen Oyster Products Using Microwave Steam-Venting Technology, Luis Alberto Espinoza
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Gulf Coast region, principally Louisiana, leads the nation in oyster production. The National Marine Fisheries Service reported that 19.7 million pounds of oyster meat, valued at $62.3 million dollars were harvested from the Gulf Coast region in 2010. One of the main concerns for this industry is the health risk associated with the consumption of oysters, particularly for at-risk populations. Oysters are filter feeders. They tend to concentrate microbes present in surrounding waters, some of which can cause severe illness in susceptible humans. Among pathogens that contaminate the gastrointestinal system of oysters, Vibrio spp (especially V. parahaemolyticus and V. …

Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Interactions With Chitin In Response To Environmental Factors, Vanessa Molina
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a naturally occurring chitinoclastic human pathogen that adsorbs to substrates, including chitinous copepods and oysters, as part of its ecology, a phenomenon that is important in its responses to changes in environmental factors such as temperature and salinity. Little is known about acute responses of V. parahaemolyticus when subjected to abrupt environmental changes such as those encountered during postharvest oyster treatments such as icing, exposure to mammalian host conditions, and transport via ballast water. The following in vitro studies investigated V. parahaemolyticus adsorption and gene expression as a function of substrate, temperature, and salinity as a model …
Disinfection Performance Of Peracetic Acid In Florida Wastewater Reuse Applications, Killian Eckert
Disinfection Performance Of Peracetic Acid In Florida Wastewater Reuse Applications, Killian Eckert
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As Florida’s population continues to grow and urbanization increases, traditional freshwater sources are in danger of being exhausted. Wastewater reuse programs offer a way to create a potable offset in order to protect these freshwater sources and the environments in which they are found. Reuse regulations for the disinfection of wastewater are increasingly becoming more stringent. In addition to tough regulations, operating costs have also become a driving force behind a movement to assess new and potentially economical chemicals and processes for disinfection. The objective of this thesis is to assess the disinfection performance of peracetic acid (PAA), an alternative …

Hipaa As An Evidentiary Rule: An Analysis Of Miguel M. And Its Impact , Jennifer Clark
Journal of Law and Health
In New York suppression of evidence is only appropriate where constitutional, statutory, or decisional authority mandates it, even if obtained by unethical or unlawful means. The courts have been split on how to apply this standard to evidence obtained in violation of HIPAA. In the case In re Miguel M., the New York Court of Appeals addressed this question for the first time, finding that such evidence should be suppressed. Because it is the first authoritative case in New York addressing the evidentiary impact of a HIPAA violation, it is tempting to read Miguel M. as creating a new evidentiary …

Development Of Enhanced Lateral Flow Test Devices For Point-Of-Care Diagnostics, Roman Gerbers
Development Of Enhanced Lateral Flow Test Devices For Point-Of-Care Diagnostics, Roman Gerbers
Open Access Master's Theses
Lateral flow Imunoassays (LFIA) are common, simple to use point-of-care devices for the diagnostic market. Conventionally LFIAs are limited in their complexity since they are optimized for minimally trained operators. Paper-based analytical devices (PAD) are advanced sensors based on a wide range of recently developed techniques for complex analytical methods. In this research, a point-of-care (POC) immunosensor was developed based on techniques adapted from lateral flow and paper-based analytical devices. Alternating layers of paper and tape were used to expand the common 2D design of lateral flow tests to 3D in order to enable complex fluid flow control. Four fluidic …
Microsatellite Analysis Of Trophy Largemouth Bass From Arkansas Reservoirs, K. A. Lamothe, Ronald L. Johnson
Microsatellite Analysis Of Trophy Largemouth Bass From Arkansas Reservoirs, K. A. Lamothe, Ronald L. Johnson
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) has introduced Florida largemouth bass (FLMB; Micropterus salmoides floridanus) to water bodies historically containing the northern largemouth bass (NLMB; Micropterus salmoides salmoides) subspecies since the late 1970s in an attempt to produce a trophy LMB fishery. Since 2006, the AGFC has been biannually sampling reservoirs stocked with FLMB to determine levels of admixture. Here, total sampling efforts between 2006 and 2011 have been combined, and LMB heavier than 2,268 g (5 lb) were analyzed in an effort to investigate distribution of bass by their genetic composition designated as trophy LMB by the AGFC. …
