Cancer Immunotherapy Treatments, Shifra Sadowsky Jan 2013

Cancer Immunotherapy Treatments, Shifra Sadowsky

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in American, with over half a million deaths from cancer reported in 2009. Cancer chemotherapy treatments were developed in the nineteen hundreds and remain the backbone of current treatments; however, they have some limitations. New immunotherapy cancer treatments, where biologic agents are given to patients to influence the body’s natural immune response, are being researched. Among these immunotherapy treatments are co-inhibition blockade of T cells, and combination blockade treatments together with chemotherapy treatment. This review will discuss T cell activation and the role of T cell coinhibitors such as CTLA-4 and PD-1 …

Associations Of Perceived Stress, Sleep, And Human Papillomavirus In A Prospective Cohort Of Men, Stephanie Kay Kolar Jan 2013

Associations Of Perceived Stress, Sleep, And Human Papillomavirus In A Prospective Cohort Of Men, Stephanie Kay Kolar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Mucosal human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) and is associated with genitals warts, anogenital cancers, and oropharyngeal cancers. Most sexually active persons will become infected with HPV at some point in their lives, however few will develop HPV-related diseases such as warts, lesions, or cancer as a result of the infection. It is unclear why a minority of individuals fail to clear HPV infection and develop clinical disease. Due to initial associations with cervical lesions, much research has focused on women. Th1 type immune responses have been associated with successful response to HPV …

Practices And Factors Influencing Sharps Use And Safety In A Suburban Fire Department And Among Emergency Medical Services Personnel, Christine Michelle Mcguire-Wolfe Jan 2013

Practices And Factors Influencing Sharps Use And Safety In A Suburban Fire Department And Among Emergency Medical Services Personnel, Christine Michelle Mcguire-Wolfe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Needlestick injuries (NSIs) are a recognized risk for occupationally-related transmission of bloodborne pathogens (BBP). The occurrence of NSIs and BBP exposures among firefighters (FFs) and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel has been documented.

The purposes of this study were: 1) to define the problem of NSI among FFs and EMS personnel in a suburban fire department (FD) and identify practices and factors that influence sharps use and safety; 2) design and implement and intervention to promote safer sharps device usage; and 3) to measure the effectiveness of the intervention among FFs and EMS personnel.

A multi-phase, mixed methods approach was …

Characterization Of Brer Interaction With The Bile Response Promoters Breab And Brer In Vibrio Cholerae, Francisca A. Cerda-Maira, Gabriela Kovacikova, Brooke A. Jude, Karen Skorupski, Ronald Taylor Jan 2013

Characterization Of Brer Interaction With The Bile Response Promoters Breab And Brer In Vibrio Cholerae, Francisca A. Cerda-Maira, Gabriela Kovacikova, Brooke A. Jude, Karen Skorupski, Ronald Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

The Vibrio cholerae BreR protein is a transcriptional repressor of the breAB efflux system operon, which encodes proteins involved in bile resistance. In a previous study (F. A. Cerda-Maira, C. S. Ringelberg, and R. K. Taylor, J. Bacteriol. 190:7441-7452, 2008), we used gel mobility shift assays to determine that BreR binds at two independent binding sites at the breAB promoter and a single site at its own promoter. Here it is shown, by DNase I footprinting and site-directed mutagenesis, that BreR is able to bind at a distal and a proximal site in the breAB promoter. However, only one of …

Frequency And Outcome Of Graft Versus Host Disease After Stem Cell Transplantation: A Six-Year Experience From A Tertiary Care Center In Pakistan, Natasha Ali, Salman Naseem Adil, Mohammad Usman Shaikh, Nehal Masood Jan 2013

Frequency And Outcome Of Graft Versus Host Disease After Stem Cell Transplantation: A Six-Year Experience From A Tertiary Care Center In Pakistan, Natasha Ali, Salman Naseem Adil, Mohammad Usman Shaikh, Nehal Masood

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency and outcome of graft versus host disease after stem cell transplantation for various haematological disorders in Pakistan.
Materials and Methods: Pretransplant workup of the patient and donor was performed. Mobilization was done with G-CSF 300 mu g twice daily for five day. Standard GvHD prophylaxis was done with methotrexate 15mg/m(2) on day +1 followed by 10mg/m(2) on days +3 and +6 and cyclosporine. Grading was done according to the Glucksberg classification.
Results: A total of 153 transplants were done from April 2004 to December 2011. Out of these were …

Identification Of Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria Isolated From Clinical Specimens At A Tertiary Care Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study, Imran Ahmed, Kauser Jabeen, Rumina Hasan Jan 2013

Identification Of Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria Isolated From Clinical Specimens At A Tertiary Care Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study, Imran Ahmed, Kauser Jabeen, Rumina Hasan

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background:
Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are opportunistic pathogens in immuno-compromised patients. They are also increasingly recognized as pathogens in immuno-competent individuals. Globally, an increase in NTM isolation is being reported with a varied geographic prevalence of different species around the world. There is lack of data on species distribution of these organisms from Pakistan. Treatment options differ according to the species isolated and its susceptibility profile. Knowledge of local species variation would help targeted therapy. This study was performed to determine frequencies of different NTM species isolated from various clinical specimens submitted at a tertiary care hospital laboratory.
Methods:
NTM isolated …
