A Business Plan For A Custom Dry Cow Transition Facility And A Calf Ranch, Landon Joseph Fernandes Mar 2013

A Business Plan For A Custom Dry Cow Transition Facility And A Calf Ranch, Landon Joseph Fernandes

Dairy Science

In recent economic times the dairy industry has witnessed historic lows in milk price and historic highs in feed prices. As a result many dairies have been forced out of business or have found other ways to diversify in order to offset the accumulated debt from dairying. One possible way a dairy can minimize debt is by sending its transition cows to custom transition cow management facility from dry-off through freshening. This management facility would give optimal care and attention to these cows to ensure metabolic and post calving health issues are minimal and that cows are returned to the …

Lyme disease is transmitted by the bite of certain Ixodes ticks, which can also transmit Anaplasma phagocytophilum, the cause of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA). Although culture can be used to identify patients infected with A. phagocytophilum and is the microbiologic gold standard, few studies have evaluated culture-confirmed patients with HGA. We conducted a prospective study in which blood culture was used to detect HGA infection in patients with a compatible clinical illness. Early Lyme disease was defined by the presence of erythema migrans. The epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory features of 44 patients with culture-confirmed HGA were compared with those of …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Pathogens target important components of host immunity to cause disease. The Pseudomonas syringae type III-secreted effector HopU1 is a mono-ADP-ribosyltransferase required for full virulence on Arabidopsis thaliana. HopU1 targets several RNA-binding proteins including GRP7, whose role in immunity is still unclear. Here, we show that GRP7 associates with translational components, as well as with the pattern recognition receptors FLS2 and EFR. Moreover, GRP7 binds specifically FLS2 and EFR transcripts in vivo through its RNA recognition motif. HopU1 does not affect the protein–protein associations between GRP7, FLS2 and translational components. Instead, HopU1 blocks the interaction between GRP7 and FLS2 and …

Effective removal of apoptotic cells, particularly apoptotic neutrophils, is essential for the successful resolution of acute inflammatory conditions. In these experiments, we found that whereas interaction between vitronectin and integrins diminished the ability of macrophages to ingest apoptotic cells, interaction between vitronectin with urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) on the surface of apoptotic cells also had equally important inhibitory effects on efferocytosis. Preincubation of vitronectin with plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 eliminated its ability to inhibit phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Similarly, incubation of apoptotic cells with soluble uPAR or Abs to uPAR significantly diminished efferocytosis. In the setting of LPSinduced ALI, enhanced …

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Problem/background : Hookworm infection is one of the major neglected tropical infectious diseases causing both overt and cryptic morbidity among ~600 million people living in tropical areas. As conventional hookworm control measures by improving sanitation and mass anthelminthic drug administration are not sustainable, development of hookworm vaccines is mandatory. One of the major vaccine candidates is Ancylostoma secreted protein-2 of Necator americanus (Na-ASP-2). To date, only one Na-ASP-2 sequence is available; therefore, it remains unknown whether the effectiveness of a vaccine derived from this molecule may be compromised by antigenic diversity in hookworm population. Objectives : To determine the Na-ASP-2 …

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Daptomycin is an extensively used anti-staphylococcal agent due to the rise in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, but the mechanism(s) of resistance is poorly understood. Comparative genome sequencing, transcriptomics, ultrastructure, and cell envelope studies were carried out on two relatively higher level (4 and 8 mu g/ml(-1)) laboratory-derived daptomycin-resistant strains (strains CB1541 and CB1540 respectively) compared to their parent strain (CB1118; MW2). Several mutations were found in the strains. Both strains had the same mutations in the two-component system genes waIK and agrA. In strain CB1540 mutations were also detected in the ribose phosphate pyrophosphokinase (prs) and polyribonucleotide nucleotidyltransferase genes (pnpA), a …

Minimal change disease (MCD), the most common idiopathic nephrotic syndrome in children, is characterized by proteinuria and loss of glomerular visceral epithelial cell (podocyte) ultrastructure. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN) are used to study podocyte injury in models of MCD in vivo and in vitro. We hypothesized that LPS and PAN influence components of the innate immune system in podocytes such as the Toll-Like Receptor (TLRs), TLR adapter molecules, and associated cytokines. Our results show that cultured human podocytes constitutively express TLRs 1-6 and TLR-10, but not TLRs 7-9. LPS (25 μg/ml) or PAN (60 μg/ml) caused comparable derangement …

Mechanisms Of Protective Activity Of West Nile Virus Anti-Envelope Antibodies In Vitro And In Vivo, Matthew Raymond Vogt

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

West Nile virus: WNV) is a neurotropic flavivirus capable of causing severe disease and death in humans. Studies in mice have demonstrated that the humoral immune response against WNV limits primary infection and protects against a secondary challenge. Accordingly, passive transfer of immune serum or monoclonal antibodies: MAb) against the envelope: E) protein either prior to WNV infection or shortly thereafter is sufficient to protect mice from disease. The E protein is an immunodominant antigen in the antibody response to WNV infection, and the most potent neutralizing MAbs recognize an epitope on the lateral ridge of domain III: DIII-LR) of …

Doctoral Dissertations

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Inhibitors that target key enzymes involved in epigenetic alterations, particularly histone deacetylases (HDACs), are garnering interest in cancer research because of their unique ability to reversibly induce terminal differentiation of transformed cells by influencing chromatin structure. Through an in-house collaborative effort, derivatives of hinokitiol, a troplone-related non-benzenoid aromatic compound, are being synthesized and characterized by the Wright and Anderson laboratories as HDAC inhibitors (HDACi). Given the novelty of these tropolones as antineoplastic agents, a number of biochemical and functional studies were conducted in order to develop tropolones as …

Targeted Estimation Of Variable Importance Measures With Interval-Censored Outcomes, Stephanie Sapp, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Kimberly Page Feb 2013

Targeted Estimation Of Variable Importance Measures With Interval-Censored Outcomes, Stephanie Sapp, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Kimberly Page

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In most experimental and observational studies, participants are not followed in continuous time. Instead, data is collected about participants only at certain monitoring times. These monitoring times are random, and often participant specific. As a result, outcomes are only known up to random time intervals, resulting in interval-censored data. In contrast, when estimating variable importance measures on interval-censored outcomes, practitioners often ignore the presence of interval-censoring, and instead treat the data as continuous or right-censored, applying ad-hoc approaches to mask the true interval-censoring. In this paper, we describe Targeted Minimum Loss-based Estimation methods tailored for estimation of variable importance measures …
