Two Biochemically Distinct Lipophosphoglycans From Leishmania Braziliensis And Leishmania Infantum Trigger Different Innate Immune Responses In Murine Macrophages, Izabela Coimbra Ibraim, Rafael Ramiro De Assis, Natália Lima Pessoa, Marco Antônio Campos, Maria Norma Melo, Salvatore Joseph Turco, Rodrigo Pedro Soares

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The dominant, cell surface lipophosphoglycan (LPG) of Leishmania is a multifunctional molecule involved in the interaction with vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. Although the role of LPG on infection has been extensively studied, it is not known if LPG interspecies variations contribute to the different immunopathologies of leishmaniases. To investigate the issue of interspecies polymorphisms, two Leishmania species from the New World that express structural variations of side chains of LPG repeat units were examined. In this context, the procyclic form of L. braziliensis LPG (strain M2903), is devoid of side chains, while the L. infantum LPG (strain BH46) has …

Status Of Nutria (Myocastor Coypus) Populations In The Pacific Northwest And Development Of Associated Control And Management Strategies, With An Emphasis On Metropolitan Habitats, Trevor Robert Sheffels

Dissertations and Theses

The nutria (Myocastor coypus) is a semi-aquatic rodent native to South America that was introduced to the Pacific Northwest, USA, in the 1930s. Primary damage categories from this invasive species include burrowing and herbivory, resulting in habitat degradation. Nutria have become well-established in metropolitan habitats, and anecdotal information suggests the problem has increased in recent years. However, little regional research on the species has been conducted. The scope of this research, which emphasizes metropolitan habitats, includes three primary foci in relation to nutria populations in the Pacific Northwest: modeling habitat suitability, assessing activity and movement patterns, and identifying and managing …

Health Management and Policy Presentations

Efforts to improve the health and economic performance of the U.S. health system require evidence about how best to deliver public health strategies that protect health and prevent disease and injury on a population-wide basis. The field of public health services and systems research is building a "science of delivery" in public health that complements the evidence-based practice movement in medical care.

Tumor Antigens Revealed By Exome Seqeuncing Drive Editing Of Tumor Immunogenicity, Matthew David Vesely Mar 2013

Tumor Antigens Revealed By Exome Seqeuncing Drive Editing Of Tumor Immunogenicity, Matthew David Vesely

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Accumulated data from animal models and human cancer patients strongly support the concept that immunity cannot only function as an extrinsic tumor suppressor, but also shape tumor immunogenicity. These observations led to the development of the cancer immunoediting hypothesis that stresses the dual host-protective and tumor-sculpting actions of immunity on developing cancers. We previously demonstrated important roles for lymphocytes and type I: IFN-α/β) and type II: IFN-γ) interferons in cancer immunoediting. In the present work, we confirmed the role of IFN-γ in sculpting tumor immunogenicity and provide evidence that antigens expressed by tumors drive the destructive or sculpting actions of …

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Cordyceps sinensis is a medicinal mushroom used for centuries in Asian countries as a health supplement and tonic. Hirsutella sinensis—the anamorphic, mycelial form of C. sinensis—possesses similar properties, and is increasingly used as a health supplement. Recently, C. sinensis extracts were shown to inhibit the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β in lipopolysaccharide-treated macrophages. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this process has remained unclear. In addition, whether H. sinensis mycelium (HSM) extracts also inhibit the production of IL-1β has not been investigated. In the present study, the HSM extract suppresses IL-1β and IL-18 secretion, and ATP-induced activation of caspase-1. Notably, …

Genetic And Epigenetic Interactions In In Vivo And In Vitro Reprogramming, Margaret Ashley Young Mar 2013

Genetic And Epigenetic Interactions In In Vivo And In Vitro Reprogramming, Margaret Ashley Young

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In cancer pathogenesis and induced pluripotent stem: iPS) cell production, an essential step for reprogramming is acquisition of self-renewal. In hematopoietic cells, HOX genes are partially responsible for self-renewal, and HOX gene dysregulation commonly occurs in acute myeloid leukemia: AML). HOX dysregulation is seen in AML with translocations involving HOX genes themselves: e.g. NUP98-HOXA9) and with other disease-initiating translocations: e.g. MLL translocations and inv(16)). However, HOX genes are also highly expressed in many AML samples without translocations; the mechanism that causes "dysregulation" in these cases is unknown. Whole genome sequencing of 45 de novo AML genomes showed that recurrent mutations …

Broadening Access To Medical Care During A Severe Influenza Pandemic: The Cdc Nurse Triage Line Project., Lisa M. Koonin, Dan Hanfling

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

The impact of a severe influenza pandemic could be overwhelming to hospital emergency departments, clinics, and medical offices if large numbers of ill people were to simultaneously seek care. While current planning guidance to reduce surge on hospitals and other medical facilities during a pandemic largely focuses on improving the “supply” of medical care services, attention on reducing “demand” for such services is needed by better matching patient needs with alternative types and sites of care. Based on lessons learned during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and its partners are currently exploring the acceptability …

Guidance On Performing Focused Ethnographies With An Emphasis On Healthcare Research, Gina M.A Higginbottom, Jennifer J. Pillay, Nana Y. Boadu

The Qualitative Report

Focused ethnographies can have meaningful and useful application in primary care, community, or hospital healthcare practice, and are often used to determine ways to improve care and care processes. They can be pragmatic and efficient ways to capture data on a specific topic of importance to individual clinicians or clinical specialties. While many examples of focused ethnographies are available in the literature, there is a limited availability of guidance documents for conducting this research. This paper defines focused ethnographies, locates them within the ethnographic genre, justifies their use in healthcare research, and outlines the methodological processes including those related to …

Batf3-Deficient Mice: Susceptibility To Toxoplasma Gondii And Responses To Il-12 Treatment In Vivo, Mona Mashayekhi Mar 2013

Batf3-Deficient Mice: Susceptibility To Toxoplasma Gondii And Responses To Il-12 Treatment In Vivo, Mona Mashayekhi

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

CD8α+ dendritic cells are important in vivo for cross-presentation of antigens derived from intracellular pathogens and tumors. Additionally, stimulation of IL-12 production by CD8α+ DCs has suggested a role for these cells in response to Toxoplasma gondii antigens, although no experiments have yet shown an in vivo requirement for these cells against T. gondii infection. Towards this goal, we examined T. gondii infection of Batf3-/- mice, which selectively lack only lymphoid-resident CD8α+ DCs and related peripheral CD103+ DCs. Batf3-/- mice were extremely susceptible to T. gondii infection, with defective priming of CD8+ T cells, and decreased production of IL-12 and …

Use Of Soybean Lecithin In Shape Controlled Synthesis Of Gold Nanoparticles, Benjamin Robert Ayres Mar 2013

Use Of Soybean Lecithin In Shape Controlled Synthesis Of Gold Nanoparticles, Benjamin Robert Ayres

Dissertations and Theses

The work presented in this dissertation is a composite of experiments in the growth of gold nanoparticles with specific optical properties of interest. The goal is to synthesize these gold nanoparticles using soybean extract for not only shape control, but for propensity as a biocompatible delivery system. The optical properties of these nanoparticles has found great application in coloring glass during the Roman empire and, over the centuries, has grown into its own research field in applications of nanoparticulate materials. Many of the current functions include use in biological systems as biosensors and therapeutic applications, thus making biocompatibility a necessity. …

A Branching Process Approximation Of The Final Size Of A Multitype Collective Reed-Frost Model, A. Eseghir, A. Kissami, H. El Maroufy, T. Ziad

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

We consider the asymptotic behavior of the final size of a multitype collective Reed-Frost process. This type of models was introduced by [9] and include most known epidemic models of the type SIR (Susceptible, Infected, Removed) as special cases. Under certain conditions, we show that, when the initial number of susceptible is very large and the initial number of infected individuals is finite, the infection process behaves as a multitype Galton-Watson process. This fact is proved using a simple argument based on Bernstein polynomials. We use this result to study the final size of the epidemic.

In this study, we investigated the potential role of the PCR assay in detection of Brucella species, from patients suspect to have brucellosis, using blood samples in both human and animal. To establish a PCR technique for diagnosis of active brucellosis in our samples, DNA extraction was carried out using a commercial kit, and a laboratory extraction procedure. PCR amplification was done using 1 set of primers: B4/B5 for Brucella species. Extraction of Brucella DNA using the commercial kit was successful. The laboratory extraction was successful and more economic. A …

Lipid Profile Changes In Toxoplasmosis Aborted Women, Azhar Hatif Al-Kuraishi, Huda Hamed Hasan, Shatha M. J. Al-Kateeb Mar 2013

Lipid Profile Changes In Toxoplasmosis Aborted Women, Azhar Hatif Al-Kuraishi, Huda Hamed Hasan, Shatha M. J. Al-Kateeb

Baghdad Science Journal

Blood lipids are important mediators of host defense during the acute phase of innate immunity. Parasites may induce significant changes in lipid parameters, as has been shown in vitro study where substitution of serum by lipid/cholesterol in medium and in experimental models (in vivo). Thus changes in lipid profile occur in patients that having active infections with most of the parasites. Toxoplasma cannot synthesize cholesterol and depends upon acquisition of low density lipoprotein (LDL)-derived from the host cell, via endocytosis mediated by the LDL receptor or the LDL receptor-related protein. The present study is conducted to evaluate the changes in lipid …

The Last Page: The Other Sars Epidemic, John Hughes Mar 2013

The Last Page: The Other Sars Epidemic, John Hughes

Colby Magazine

In the weeks before I left for my job teaching English in Wuhan, in central China’s Hubei province, I worried about whether I would be a good teacher, how I would cope with spicy Sichuan cuisine every day and even whether Chinese girls would like me. I didn’t, however, give a thought to the possibility that a deadly disease—and the even more invasive rumors that accompanied it—would consume my life so fully that, in the end, I would count masks as I walked down the street, trying to time my breathing so I exhaled as I passed large groups of …

Foodborne Urinary Tract Infections: A New Paradigm For Antimicrobial-Resistant Foodborne Illness, Lora Nordstrom, Cindy M. Liu, Lance B. Price

Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Publications

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections worldwide. Disproportionately affecting women, UTIs exact a substantial public burden each year in terms of direct medical expenses, decreased quality of life, and lost productivity. Increasing antimicrobial resistance among strains of extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia colichallenges successful treatment of UTIs. Community-acquired UTIs were long considered sporadic infections, typically caused by the patients’ native gastrointestinal microbiota; however, the recent recognition of UTI outbreaks with probable foodborne origins has shifted our understanding of UTI epidemiology. Along with this paradigm shift come new opportunities to disrupt the infection process and possibly quell …
