Physicians, Patients, And Facebook: Could You? Would You? Should You?, Joy Peluchette, Katherine Karl, Alberto Coustasse
Management Faculty Research
This paper investigates the opinions of physicians and patients regarding the use of Facebook to communicate with one another about health-related issues. We analyzed 290 comments posted on online discussion boards and found that most (51.7%) were opposed to physicians being Facebook “friends” with patients and many (42%) were opposed to physicians having any kind of Facebook presence. The primary reasons for this opposition were concerns about privacy and the need to maintain professional boundaries in the physician-patient relationship. Others expressed concerns about HIPAA violations. Some believed it was acceptable for physicians to use Facebook as long as they were …

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation can affect phenotypic variation; therefore, knowing its distribution within and among individuals is of importance to understanding many human diseases. Intra-individual mtDNA variation (heteroplasmy) has been generally assumed to be random. We used massively parallel sequencing to assess heteroplasmy across ten tissues and demonstrate that in unrelated individuals there are tissue-specific, recurrent mutations. Certain tissues, notably kidney, liver and skeletal muscle, displayed the identical recurrent mutations that were undetectable in other tissues in the same individuals. Using RFLP analyses we validated one of the tissue-specific mutations in the two sequenced individuals and replicated the patterns in …

Privacy & Security In The Cloud, Edgar A. Whitley, Leslie P. Willcocks, Will Venters
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Privacy and security issues are frequently presented as major inhibitors of cloud adoption. Some of these are operational issues and others relate to regulatory and compliance requirements that vary by industry and location. There is a growing body of guidance that seeks to clarify the implications of these concerns for various parts of the cloud supply chain. This paper provides a review of the business and legal risks associated with cloud computing and critically reviews the guidance available. It pays particular attention to the implications of the PRISM revelations for the development of a cloud marketplace that aims to keep …

Communication And Common Interest, Peter Godfrey-Smith, Manolo Martínez
Communication And Common Interest, Peter Godfrey-Smith, Manolo Martínez
Publications and Research
Explaining the maintenance of communicative behavior in the face of incentives to deceive, conceal information, or exaggerate is an important problem in behavioral biology. When the interests of agents diverge, some form of signal cost is often seen as essential to maintaining honesty. Here, novel computational methods are used to investigate the role of common interest between the sender and receiver of messages in maintaining cost-free informative signaling in a signaling game. Two measures of common interest are defined. These quantify the divergence between sender and receiver in their preference orderings over acts the receiver might perform in each state …

Fully Homomorphic Encryption For Wireless Network, Olive Mbianda
Fully Homomorphic Encryption For Wireless Network, Olive Mbianda
Research Papers
This work provides a mathematical approach of the Fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) and its implementation in a wireless network. FHE has been presented as the "Holy Grail" by the cryptographers. This special encryption scheme enables one to perform complex operations(both addition and multiplication) on a cypher text without ever decrypting the text. An immediate application is the delegated computation, an untrusted party can process the data without endangering the privacy of the source and the integrity of the data. The first FHE scheme was introduced in 2009, by Craig Gentry. His scheme was based on the properties of rings especially …

The Court decided four issues: (1) Whether a deceased’s blood alcohol content (BAC) may be submitted to show his comparative negligence in a wrongful death action; (2) whether a district court abuses its discretion by allowing an expert to testify based on an allegedly unreliable report; (3) whether a jury’s damages award should be reduced based on comparative negligence before or after imposing a statutory damage cap; and (4) whether awards for attorney fees may include charges for nonattorney staff.

Broken News: Market Segmentation And Selective Exposure In Online News, Deidra Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Research has revealed that more Americans than ever are turning to the World Wide Web as their primary source for news and information instead of legacy media outlets such as printed newspapers and magazines and broadcast news. As more and more people rely on the Internet as a primary source for news, it is important to analyze the characteristics and content of online news to expose and correct problems associated with the practices that inform its production and presentation. There are several longstanding practices in the American journalistic tradition that have been adapted to the online news environment. The practices …

Sustainability Initiatives In The Workplace And Employee Productivity, Megan R. Nollman
Sustainability Initiatives In The Workplace And Employee Productivity, Megan R. Nollman
Research Papers
Sustainability in the workplace has the potential to affect many aspects of an organization, including employee productivity. Sustainable designers, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) professionals, claim that sustainability has numerous positive impacts in the workplace. These impacts include fewer employee sick days, increased building occupant satisfaction, and increased employee productivity. Researchers that have studied this claim have found that in many cases, sustainable initiatives and buildings have had a slight to profound positive effects on occupant satisfaction, attendance, and productivity. Lower levels of satisfaction for lighting and acoustics are common, though, because many sustainable workplaces use …

Effects Of Cerebral Hypothermia On Cerebral Vasculature And Neuronal Activity During Pharmacologically-Induced Neonatal Seizures, Elliott James Jolly
Effects Of Cerebral Hypothermia On Cerebral Vasculature And Neuronal Activity During Pharmacologically-Induced Neonatal Seizures, Elliott James Jolly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Seizures, a common form of neurological dysfunction in newborns, occur when large groups of neurons fire in a synchronous and excessive manner. During seizures, cerebral vessels dilate to match excessive neuronal activation via increased heart rate, blood pressure, and cerebral blood flow. We hypothesized that cerebral hypothermia has beneficial neuronal, cerebrovascular, and systemic effects in neonatal seizures. Bicuculline, a GABAA receptor blocker, produces sustained seizure activity in neonatal piglets for over two hours. Electrocorticogram recordings provided no evidence that excessive neuronal activation or cerebral vasodilation were mitigated by hypothermia. These novel data suggest that cerebral hypothermia has no anticonvulsant effects …
Common Pool Resource Issues In Managing Herbicide Resistant Weeds, David E. Ervin
Common Pool Resource Issues In Managing Herbicide Resistant Weeds, David E. Ervin
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Controlling herbicide resistance (HR) will require the integration of economics and social science with the biophysical and technological aspects of this growing problem. The existence of mobile herbicide resistance and/or herbicide tolerance traits adds complexity as genetic susceptibility to the herbicide is a resource open to all farmers impacting the weed population. Weed scientists have recognized that the “tragedy of the commons” may appear when herbicide resistance is mobile across farms. However, the private and public institutions that can influence individual and group decisions about HR have received sparse analysis. When such conditions prevail, reliance on voluntary education, technical assistance …
