Civil Justice Reform In Social Security Adjudications, Jeffrey S. Wolfe Nov 2013

Civil Justice Reform In Social Security Adjudications, Jeffrey S. Wolfe

Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary

Part I of this Article explores the actions of the Social Security Administration over time, both as related directly to the role of the administrative law judge in the case management process and to the agency's management of the backlog crisis generally, examining the cultural environment of bureaucratic management that has, despite the passage of decades, failed to remedy a persistent animus between the agency and its cadre of administrative law judges to the public detriment. Part II next examines the core attributes of the managerial judge and contrasts this in Part III with the agency's handling of the backlog …

Taking People's History Back To The People: An Approach To Making History Popular, Relevant, And Intellectual, David H. Lempert

Democracy & Education

This article takes the educational vision of people’s history an additional step, combining it with experiential approaches to democratic education that have developed over the past century and presenting the tools for students and adults to take control of their own historical study, control their heritage, and personalize the study of history on the very landscapes of their own communities. Through this approach, history becomes an exciting democratic exercise not merely in storytelling but in discovery of, participation in, and interaction with history on the very grounds of the community. The new approach to history, being tested in several communities, …

University-State Child Welfare Training Partnerships: The Challenge Of Matching Dollar Contributions, Jerry D. Marx, Melissa Wells Nov 2013

University-State Child Welfare Training Partnerships: The Challenge Of Matching Dollar Contributions, Jerry D. Marx, Melissa Wells

Social Work

Universities are uniquely positioned to provide the very best training opportunities to public child welfare workers. However, university–child welfare agency training partnerships require a significant commitment of time and resources by university personnel at a time of extensive state cuts to public higher education. This national survey of university partnership administrators found significant differences among university respondents involving length of the contractual relationship, matching dollar requirements, and overall satisfaction with the training partnership.

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Strong feedback between global biodiversity loss and persistent, extreme rural poverty are major challenges in the face of concurrent food, energy, and environmental crises. This paper examines the role of industrial agricultural intensification and market integration as exogenous socio-ecological drivers of biodiversity loss and poverty traps in Latin America. We then analyze the potential of a food sovereignty framework, based on protecting the viability of a diverse agroecological matrix while supporting rural livelihoods and global food production. We review several successful examples of this approach, including ecological land reform in Brazil, agroforestry, milpa, and the uses of wild varieties in …

One, Two And Three-Dimensional Ultrasound Measurements Of Carotid Atherosclerosis Before And After Cardiac Rehabilitation: Preliminary Results Of A Randomized Controlled Trial., Tamas J Lindenmaier, Daniel N Buchanan, Damien Pike, Tim Hartley, Robert D Reid, J David Spence, Richard Chan, Michael Sharma, Peter L Prior, Neville Suskin, Grace Parraga

Medical Biophysics Publications

BACKGROUND: It is still not known how patients who are post-transient ischemic attack (TIA) or post-stroke might benefit from prospectively planned comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation (CCR). In this pilot evaluation of a larger ongoing randomized-controlled-trial, we evaluated ultrasound (US) measurements of carotid atherosclerosis in subjects following TIA or mild non-disabling stroke and their relationship with risk factors before and after 6-months of CCR.

METHODS: Carotid ultrasound (US) measurements of one-dimensional intima-media-thickness (IMT), two-dimensional total-plaque-area (TPA), three-dimensional total-plaque-volume (TPV) and vessel-wall-volume (VWV) were acquired before and after 6-months CCR for 39 subjects who had previously experienced a TIA and provided written informed …

Parental Support Group Member's Views On Inclusion, Kaitlyn Blasy Nov 2013

Parental Support Group Member's Views On Inclusion, Kaitlyn Blasy

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to measure the view that parents involved in support groups for parents of children with special needs have on inclusion. Parents were surveyed using the "Parent Opinion About Inclusion/Mainstreaming" questionnaire developed by Leyser and Kirk (2004). Children whose parents completed the survey were ages 4 through 20 and were included in various educational settings. Parents were found to be generally supportive of the idea of inclusion. Benefits of inclusion included social skills for both students with and without disabilities, academic skills, and equal opportunities. Perceived problems with inclusion included experience and adaptability of general …
