Our research study expands the frontiers of knowledge concerning Latin American culture by exploring generational changes in the three components of culture: values, attitudes and behaviors. We examined generational changes in Latin American values, attitudes towards women and Type A stress behaviors with two population cohorts (2006 and 2012) of working adults in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

A question of significant importance in today’s global marketplace is how employees balance their conflicting work and family lives. The purpose of this paper is to explore cross-cultural differences and interrelationships between work-family conflict and family-work conflict and Type A stress behaviors in working adults in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. We found statistically significant crosscultural differences between Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico for work-family and family-work conflict and for Type A stress behaviors; we also found both positive and negative correlations between the work-family and family-work conflict and Type A stress behaviors.

Cognitive function decline secondary to cardiovascular disease has been reported. However, little is known about the impact of coronary artery disease (CAD) on the aging brain macrostructure or whether exercise training, in the context of cardiovascular rehabilitation, can affect brain structure following a coronary event. This study employed voxel-based morphometry of high resolution structural MRI images to investigate; 1) changes in regional gray matter volume (GMV) in CAD patients compared to age-matched controls, and 2) the effects of a six-month exercise-based cardiovascular rehabilitation program on CAD-related GMV decline. Compared to controls, significant decreases in regional GMV were found in the …

Local Wellness Policy 5 Years Later: Is It Making A Difference For Students In Low-Income, Rural Colorado Elementary Schools?, Elaine S. Belansky, Nicholas J. Cutforth, Lynn Gilbert, Jill Litt, Hannah Reed, Sharon Scarbro, Julie A. Marshall
Research Methods and Statistics: Faculty Scholarship
Introduction
The federally mandated Local Wellness Policy (LWP) was intended to promote student health in schools. This study assesses the 5-year effects of the LWP on the health practices of rural elementary schools in Colorado.
Methods
One year before and 5 years after the LWP mandate, a survey was administered to a random sample of principals, physical education (PE) teachers, and food-service managers in 45 rural, low-income elementary schools in Colorado. Response rates were 71% in 2005 and 89% in 2011.
Results
Minutes for PE and recess did not increase, nor did offerings of fresh fruits and vegetables. More schools …

Latent Networks: Ties, Structures, And Effects Within An Anonymous Community, Daric P. Thorne
Latent Networks: Ties, Structures, And Effects Within An Anonymous Community, Daric P. Thorne
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This research sought to understand the dynamics of latent network structures – what they look like in action, how the social forces within function, and how ties within such a structure may develop. Relying on initial theory developed by Caroline Haythornthwaite (2005), incorporates empirical observations to elaborate upon network latency. Carrying out the research in a virtual community known as 4chan, a survey approach was first undertaken (N = 768) and then followed up with semi-structured interviews (N = 29). The sense of community index, version 2 (SCI-2), measured social capital exchange while cultural and symbolic capital measured participation in …

The Role Of Asset Allocation Decisions In Planning For A Private Pension: The Case Of Slovenia, Aleš Berk Skok, Mitja Čok, Marko Košak, Jože Sambt
Economic and Business Review
Current demographic dynamics driven by low fertility and increasing longevity requires adjustments of the traditional frameworks of providing pensions. In this article we highlight three crucial issues policymakers should address by implementing those adjustments. First, fiscal limitations given the current and projected demographic dynamics will dramatically reduce PAYG pensions. Without sufficient savings during the active period, individuals will increasingly end up in poverty. Their savings will not be enough to support their desired consumption in old age. Second, we highlight the impact of the asset allocation decision and the general public’s related lack of awareness on this issue. Therefore, we …

The prediction of late effects after radiotherapy in organs outside a treatment field requires accurate estimations of out-of-field dose. However, out-of-field dose is not calculated accurately by commercial treatment planning systems (TPSs). The purpose of this study was to develop and test an analytical model for out-of-field dose during craniospinal irradiation (CSI) from photon beams produced by a linear accelerator. In two separate evaluations of the model, we measured absorbed dose for a 6 MV CSI using thermoluminescent dosimeters placed throughout an anthropomorphic phantom and fit the measured data to an analytical model of absorbed dose versus distance outside of …

Is Student Debt Compromising Homeownership As A Wealth-Building Tool?, William Elliott, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Ilsung Nam
Center for Social Development Research
In this study, the authors use 2007–2009 Survey of Consumer Finance longitudinal data to examine if having student loans affected home equity during the Great Recession. We find that median 2009 home equity ($90,000) for households with no outstanding student loan debt is twice as high as that of households with outstanding student loan debt ($45,000). Further, multivariate statistics reveal that a household with a college graduate, median 2007 home equity, and student loan debt had $54,334 (40%) less home equity in 2009 than a household with a college graduate, median home equity, and no college debt. The main policy …
