We report the successful synthesis of single crystals of the layered iridate (Na1−xLix)2IrO3, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.9, and a thorough study of its structural, magnetic, thermal, and transport properties. This compound allows a controlled interpolation between Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3, while maintaining the quantum magnetism of the honeycomb Ir4+ planes. The measured phase diagram demonstrates a suppression of the Néel temperature TN at an intermediate x, indicating that the magnetic orders in Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 …

The Question Of Instability, Uncompetitiveness And Growth Slowdown Of Small Middle –Income Countries In The Euro Area, Marjan Senjur
Economic and Business Review
The thesis of this article is that a small country with a below-average per capita income is in a disadvantaged macroeconomic position inside the euro area. Small middle-income countries expected an acceleration of growth by joining the EMU. They were hoping to catch up in the convergence process within the euro area. Yet things turned out differently. The crisis in 2009–2012 has led to excessive instability due to exogenous macroeconomic prices and the lack of a lender of last resort for sovereign debtors. Small MICs are more vulnerable to asymmetric shocks from abroad due to the ‘one-size-fits-all’ economic policy at …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background: Mountaineering and hiking have become popular activities recently, but related research in Taiwan has focused mainly on physiological reactions, much more than on the musculoskeletal system. However, the results of studies from abroad cannot be directly transferred because of the unique mountain and forest environment in Taiwan. In addition, chronic mountaineering injuries and derivative benefits in terms of specific physical performances still await further study. Therefore, it is important to investigate the possible relationship between mountaineering activities and musculoskeletal or knee function changes. Purpose: This study seeks to compare the differences in sports injuries, body composition and thigh muscle …

The social and environmental pressures exerted on white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus in the southeastern United States are dynamic. Understanding factors that contribute to neonatal white-tailed deer mortality is vital to population management. To determine survival rates and causes of mortality, we captured and radio-monitored neonate white-tailed deer in the coastal plain of South Carolina. Using date of birth, mass, sex, age, and year as predictor variables, we created a candidate set of survival models to evaluate which factors influenced daily survival rates. We captured and monitored 210 fawns and recorded 68 total mortalities (32.3%). We recorded few mortalities in 2006 …

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether, in a case study of Indonesia, financial derivatives are used as a means of tax avoidance as literature shows that derivative users incline to avoid tax. Two samples treatment are conducted in examining the problem. Initially, using the sample all derivative users, this study does not find that derivative users are significantly related to tax avoidance. However, when the sample is separated into two groups based on the level of disclosure on financial derivatives, the results show otherwise. Firms with low level of disclosure on financial derivatives is more tax aggressive …

BACKGROUND: Obesity affects a third of adults in the US and results in an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. While the mechanisms underlying this increased risk are not well understood, animal models of obesity have shown direct effects on the heart such as steatosis and fibrosis, which may affect cardiac function. However, the effect of obesity on cardiac function in animal models is not well-defined. We hypothesized that diet-induced obesity in mice reduces strain, torsion, and synchrony in the left ventricle (LV).
METHODS: Ten 12-week-old C57BL/6 J mice were randomized to a high-fat or low-fat diet. After 5 months on …

Criticism Of The Testamentary Undue Influence Doctrine In The United States: Lessons For South Africa?, François Du Toit
Criticism Of The Testamentary Undue Influence Doctrine In The United States: Lessons For South Africa?, François Du Toit
Journal of Civil Law Studies
This article analyzes undue influence in the South African law of wills in light of scholarly criticism of the testamentary undue influence doctrine in the United States. The article assesses in particular whether the so-called “undue influence paradox” identified in American scholarship is manifest in the South African law of wills: is testamentary undue influence’s role as guardian of testamentary freedom undermined by the judicial pursuit of family protectionism? The article proceeds, with due recognition of the differences between the American and South African legal traditions, from American scholars’ conceptualization of the paradox and their views on other complexities associated …
