The Political Economy Of Oil And The Crisis Of The Arab State System, Daniel Atzori
The Political Economy Of Oil And The Crisis Of The Arab State System, Daniel Atzori
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper argues that the so-called Arab spring is part of a tectonic shift which signals the frailty of the Arab state system as such. Countries benefitting from oil and gas rents have been more resilient, because of their potential to create systems of incentives and disincentives in order to prevent disruptive social change. Islamism, whose emergence is connected with rentier state dynamics is, at the same time, an opportunity and a threat for the survival of the Arab state and, in general, of the Arab states system. In this context, national oil companies can increasingly be conceptualized not merely …

Genomic Investigation Into Strain Heterogeneity And Pathogenic Potential Of The Emerging Gastrointestinal Pathogen Campylobacter Ureolyticus, Susan Bullman, Alan Lucid, Roy D. Sleator, Brigid Lucey, Et. Al.
Department of Biological Sciences Publications
The recent detection and isolation of C. ureolyticus from patients with diarrhoeal illness and inflammatory bowel diseases warrants further investigation into its role as an emerging pathogen of the human gastrointestinal tract. Regarding the pathogenic mechanisms employed by this species we provide the first whole genome analysis of two C. ureolyticus isolates including the type strain. Comparative analysis, subtractive hybridisation and gene ontology searches against other Campylobacter species identifies the high degree of heterogenicity between C. ureolyticus isolates, in addition to the identification of 106 putative virulence associated factors, 52 of which are predicted to be secreted. Such factors encompass …

Snakes of the Neotropical subfamily Dipsadinae are poorly known from both ecological and phylogenetic perspectives, despite unique feeding adaptations and bizarre diets. Some of these snakes specialize on snails and slugs (ecologists refer to them as “goo eaters”), and they have a unique dentition and jaw structure that permits them to extract gastropod snails from their shells. Others have enlarged rear fangs, are mildly venomous, and prey on ectothermal vertebrates such as frogs, frog eggs, and lizards (Fig. 1).

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one leading cause of death in the United States. High blood pressure (hypertension) is a form of CVD and affects nearly 1 in 3 American adults. Men are more likely than women to develop hypertension until 45 years of age. However, percentages of women diagnosed with hypertension rise to exceed that of men around 45-54 years of age.1 This trend in hypertension is a clear age-related sex dimorphism. The trend suggests that following the onset of menopause, women have a higher risk of hypertension, a risk that continues to rise with age.2-3 Current research …

A Review Of Hair Morphology Classification Techniques From The Past Thirty Years, Britten Sessions, Dr. Wilford Hess
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Due to its implicit nature in species identification, hair has been studied and classified since the beginning of the 20th century. Hausman visualized enough hair characteristics and variation between mammalian species to attempt an identification system using light microscopy. His efforts in characterizing species based on hair patterns established the form by which other later mammalogists created taxonomy keys.
Discovery And Development Of New Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus Resistance Genes, David L. Price, Dr. Mikel R. Stevens
Discovery And Development Of New Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus Resistance Genes, David L. Price, Dr. Mikel R. Stevens
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The tomato is susceptible to more than 200 diseases. Tomato spotted wilt virus is one of the most damaging pathogens in tomatoes. Due to its wide spread, TSWV has become an important limiting factor in tomato production worldwide. Most often the virus is spread by Frankliniella occidentalis (commonly known as thrips), tiny insects that act as a vector carrying the virus. After the plant is infected, the virus will spread throughout the plant. Tomatoes showing symptoms of the disease are unmarketable due to severe discolorations. In areas of high infection, the economic losses for farmers are substantial. By developing lines …

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) is an important crop originally from the Andes of South America. Quinoa grows well in high altitude and high saline conditions, for which it is used as a substantial food source by the farmers of the Altiplano (high plains) in Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. Quinoa has great nutritional value, as its seeds contain high quality protein in vast amounts and other nutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, and minerals1. However, quinoa has a seed coat with high levels of saponin that limits its nutritional uptake in humans. In addition, saponins are bitter-tasting compounds, thus making quinoa unpalatable. …

The brain’s chemistry is influenced by these drugs. This study aimed to evaluate how alcohol and other drugs affect the brain’s chemistry and identify potential avenues for therapy.
Bromus Tectorum: Cheating Its Way To The Top, Keith R. Merrill, Dr. Craig E. Coleman
Bromus Tectorum: Cheating Its Way To The Top, Keith R. Merrill, Dr. Craig E. Coleman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass, or downy brome) is an exotic annual weed (recently?) introduced to the United States (ca. 1890) . Since its introduction, B. tectorum has been extremely effective at invading the Intermountain West, displacing native vegetation and causing extensive loss of shrub and rangeland habitats. Because B. tectorum is almost entirely self-pollinating, successful individuals within a given region can be distinguished by genetic analysis. We are using microsatellite markers for genotyping ecologically diverse populations of B. tectorum. Our goal is to better understand the correlation between B tectorum genotypes and the ecological habitats in which they are found, as …
Dna Barcoding In Chenopodium, Benjamin L. King, Dr. Peter J. Maughan
Dna Barcoding In Chenopodium, Benjamin L. King, Dr. Peter J. Maughan
Journal of Undergraduate Research
DNA barcoding is one of the most important, novel techniques to be introduced in molecular systematics and genetics research in the last decade. Barcoding has been established as a consistent and reliable indicator of taxonomic relationships in eukaryotes, particularly in animals, where a uniform barcode sequence in the mitochondrial genome is used. In plants, a standard barcoding system has only been settled upon in the past year, and it is based on combining DNA sequences from three regions of the chloroplast genome. As part of the greater C. quinoa project overseen by the faculty of the Plant and Wildlife Sciences …

The development of multimedia design is influenced by various theories, such as visual aesthetic principles. Aesthetic principles are used to guide the design process and play a role in increasing the attractiveness of messages. However, along with advances in computer graphics, the application of graphic design aesthetics in multimedia learning has led to the concept of multimedia performance that is entertaining and aesthetically oriented. In addition, this technological development, together with multimedia technology, has expanded the professional scope of multimedia learning design beyond the field of education to include professions such as graphic design.
Mechanics And Modeling Of Postnatal Arterial Development In Mouse Models Of Varying Elastin, Jeffrey Karl Cheng
Mechanics And Modeling Of Postnatal Arterial Development In Mouse Models Of Varying Elastin, Jeffrey Karl Cheng
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Proper arterial function requires a specific composition of extracellular matrix: ECM) proteins to produce a vessel with the right mechanical properties. Closed circulatory systems driven by a beating heart have pulsatile flow, requiring the large elastic arteries to have the ability to distend and recoil to dampen the pulsatile output. This unique ability is made possible by elastin in the ECM that imparts elastic behavior to the artery. Genetic mutations that affect the amount and organization of elastin result in congenital cardiovascular defects that lead to lifelong cardiovascular complications. In order to devise proper treatments we must understand how development …

The Creation Of Α2nc1 Transgenic Drosophila Melanogaster, Jordan Olberding
The Creation Of Α2nc1 Transgenic Drosophila Melanogaster, Jordan Olberding
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The α2 isoform of collagen IV’s noncollagenous 1 domain (α2NC1 or canstatin) has shown promise as an anti-cancer molecule, possessing both angiostatic and pro-apoptotic properties. This work aims to further the knowledge of α2NC1 by conducting a truly in vivo study in which the Gal4-induced endogenous overexpression of α2NC1 in Drosophila melanogaster will be used to assess the effects of α2NC1 upon normal development as well as tumorigenesis. To this end, transgenic fly lines capable of overexpressing α2NC1 were created. Initial overexpression studies indicated no developmental phenotype was caused by abundance of α2NC1. However, future overexpression studies in which α2NC1 …

Rice And Magic: A Cultural History From The Precolonial World To The Present, Filomeno V.; Aguilar Jr.
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Beliefs in rice spirits were integral to the magical worldview of the precolonial inhabitants of these islands. Under Spanish colonialism, rice became a staple but it underwent disenchantment and symbolic marginality. By the 1870s rice production fell short relative to demand. Twentieth-century initiatives to address persistent shortages culminated in the 1960s Green Revolution, which further altered the rice plant and ushered in the age of practicality. Nonetheless, because rice production cannot be fully controlled, farmers still deploy culturally meaningful strategies to deal with uncertainties. The old meanings of rice for commensality have also proven resilient and reveal peculiarly Filipino ways. Keywords: …

It was supposed to be simple, a quick project, inexpensive, from the gut, a chance to experience a puppet production from beginning to end, learn from every step, and come away with an intricate knowledge of film, puppetry, green screen, and post production; a project meant to last six months: tops. But as other people became involved, idea leading to idea and way onto way it didn’t take long for my simple puppet show to turn into its namesake: a monster in the woods.

Investigation Of The Structure Of Quinoa Saponins By Hplc And Mass-Spec, Samuel Swainhart, Dr. Steve Wood
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Quinoa is a grain grown mainly by Natives in diverse areas throughout Latin America that is considered by many nutritional scientists as possibly the most nourishing grain available. Its contents include high levels of protein, an exceptional composition of amino acids, and many carbohydrates. Unfortunately, quinoa is very climate sensitive, and currently can only be grown in certain areas of the world, due to a low tolerance for intense heat. For this reason, quinoa is not grown everywhere and its annual yields are nowhere near the enormous quantities of rice and grain harvested annually. There are many different known varieties …
