Getting To Evo-Devo: Concepts And Challenges For Students Learning Evolutionary Developmental Biology, Anna Hiatt, Gregory K. Davis, Caleb Trujillo, Mark Terry, Donald P. French, Rebecca M. Price, Kathryn E. Perez, Diane Ebert-May

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

In this study we used surveys of evo-devo experts to identify the core concepts of evo-devo and outline an underlying conceptual framework. We also use interviews and surveys of conceptual difficulties with these concepts.

To examine how well biology majors have achieved the necessary foundation in evolution, numerous studies have examined how students learn natural selection. However, no studies to date have examined how students learn developmental aspects of evolution (evo-devo). Although evo-devo plays an increasing role in undergraduate biology curricula, we find that instruction often addresses development cursorily, with most of the treatment embedded within instruction on evolution. Based …

The Use Of Experts In Legal Proceedings In Singapore Involving Intellectual Property Rights, David Llewelyn Sep 2013

The Use Of Experts In Legal Proceedings In Singapore Involving Intellectual Property Rights, David Llewelyn

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In intellectual property (IP) cases decided in recent years in Singapore, the use of expert evidence is commonplace. Weaknesses in that expert evidence are commonplace too; sometimes the weaknesses are such that the evidence should be excluded, on other occasions they render the evidence of little value. However, in all cases the reliance on expert evidence will have increased the cost of the litigation for both sides (and rarely does the costs award make that increase good for the successful party). Aside from the more general policy concerns regarding expert evidence, this is an important reason why the courts must …

Not The Power To Destroy: An Effects Theory Of The Tax Power, Robert D. Cooter, Neil S. Siegel Sep 2013

Not The Power To Destroy: An Effects Theory Of The Tax Power, Robert D. Cooter, Neil S. Siegel

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court’s “new federalism” decisions impose modest limits on the regulatory authority of Congress under the Commerce Clause. According to those decisions, the Commerce Clause empowers Congress to use penalties to regulate interstate commerce, but not to regulate noncommercial conduct. What prevents Congress from penalizing non-commercial conduct by calling a penalty a tax and invoking the Taxing Clause? The only obstacle is the distinction between a penalty and a tax for purposes of Article I, Section 8. In National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius (NFIB), the Court considered whether the minimum coverage provision in the Patient Protection and …

What A Girl Wants: Female Mate Selection In Terms Of Monetary Resources And Number Of Children, Stefanit Tucker Sep 2013

What A Girl Wants: Female Mate Selection In Terms Of Monetary Resources And Number Of Children, Stefanit Tucker

Modern Psychological Studies

Several evolutionary theories provide the framework for assessing modern mate selection. Previous research in female mate selection has left a gap in whether and how number of children a male has can impact the perception of monetary resources he possesses and subsequently his desirability as a mate. The present investigation thus set out to examine resource-related differences among males with average ($50,001-75,000) and above average incomes (>$150,000) by analyzing data available through the online dating website, match.com. Furthermore, the geographic locations of New York, New York and Louisville, Kentucky were used to both refine results but also maintain genera …

A Novel Bioassay Using Root Re-Growth In Lemna, A Park, Y-J Kim, E-M Choi, Mt Brown, T Han Sep 2013

A Novel Bioassay Using Root Re-Growth In Lemna, A Park, Y-J Kim, E-M Choi, Mt Brown, T Han

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

A new phytotoxicity test method based on root elongation of three Lemna species (Lemna gibba, L. minor, and L. paucicostata) has been developed. Tests with aquatic plants have, typically, favored measurements on fronds (e.g. frond number, area, biomass) rather than on roots, due, in part, to issues associated with handling fragile roots and the time-consuming procedures of selecting roots with identical root lengths. The present method differs in that roots were excised prior to exposure with subsequent measurements on newly developed roots. Results show that there were species-specific difference in sensitivity to the five metals tested (Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu …

Cerebral Metabolic And Neuropsychological Outcomes Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Julia L. Evans

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in adolescents and adults can result in cognitive, emotional, behavioral and neurological deficits that can persist more than a year after an injury. The current preliminary study used 3D magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) and comprehensive neuropsychological assessment to determine if prolonged cerebral metabolic and cognitive alterations occur in individuals with persistent neurocognitive deficits following a mild TBI (mTBI). The current study evaluated the potential interactions between cerebral metabolism and neuropsychological performance, coping style, mood, and perceived quality of life in mTBI subjects with chronic post-concussive symptoms. The mTBI subjects performed worse than controls on neuropsychological …

Role Of Vimf In Gingipain Maturation In Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Arun S. Muthiah Sep 2013

Role Of Vimf In Gingipain Maturation In Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Arun S. Muthiah

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Gingipain activity in Porphyromonas gingivalis, the major etiological agent in adult periodontitis, is post-translationally regulated by unique Vim proteins including VimF, a putative glycosyltransferase. To ascertain the VimF mediated phenotype we first inactivated the vimF gene in P. gingivalis ATCC 33277 (FLL476), a less virulent fimbriated strain. We observed that the vimF-defective mutant (FLL476) showed a phenotype similar to that of the vimF-defective mutant (FLL95) in the P. gingivalis W83 background. While hemagglutination was not detected and autoaggregationn was reduced, biofilm formation was increased in FLL476. Also, invasive capacity decreased for this mutant. Furthermore, fimbrial structures were missing in FLL476, …

Neuropsychological Correlates Of Anosognosia In Mci And Dementia, Krystle Dina Barrera Sep 2013

Neuropsychological Correlates Of Anosognosia In Mci And Dementia, Krystle Dina Barrera

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Anosognosia is a general term used to describe a lack of awareness of a disability and is well documented in various disorders associated with neurological compromise. While anosognosia is well documented as part and parcel to Alzheimer's dementia, less research has focused on determining the presence of anosognosia in what has come to be viewed as the subclinical precursor to dementia, mild cognitive impairment. In addition, a number of different methodologies and instruments are employed in quantifying and assessing anosognosia in various populations, which make comparison across studies and diagnoses difficult. Research commonly employs a paradigm that uses the discrepancy …

Psychometrically Valid Relationships Between Acculturation And Neuropsychological Factors, Eunice E. Kwon

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Neuropsychological tests play a significant role in detecting brain dysfunction and treatment planning for patients. However, discrepancies in neurocognitive tests among ethnic minorities continue to perplex neuropsychologists and place ethnic minorities at a greater risk for misdiagnoses (Byrd et al., 2006). The aim of this study was to ascertain significant acculturation predictors influencing neuropsychological performance in ethnic minorities, particularly verbally mediated tasks which were known to be more susceptible to discrepancies in acculturation level were examined (Razani et al., 2007). Healthy participants from Hispanic (n = 52), Asian (n = 52), and Middle-Eastern (ME; n = 68) descents between the …

Characterization Of Neural Ion Regulation Dysfunction During Insult And Evaluation Of Micro-Opioid Receptor Activation During Simulated Ischemia In The Pre-Botzinger Complex, Kyle F. Dobiszewski Aug 2013

Characterization Of Neural Ion Regulation Dysfunction During Insult And Evaluation Of Micro-Opioid Receptor Activation During Simulated Ischemia In The Pre-Botzinger Complex, Kyle F. Dobiszewski

Dissertations

The health and vitality of brain tissue is dependent upon the cells' abilities to maintain ionic homeostasis across their plasma membranes. Even slight alterations in intracellular or extracellular can have a devastating effect on excitability and neural vitality. This thesis investigates several concepts related to ion flux. First, it investigates how ion flux affects characterization of brain tissue by dielectric spectroscopy and what can be done to overcome that effect. Second, it investigates how ion flux can be used to describe the state of health of the tissue. Finally, it investigates if pharmacological intervention can attenuate some of the deleterious …

Women Of The River: Grassroots Organizing And Natural Disaster, Larry G. Morton, Samuel R. Terrazas, Matthew G. Herriman Aug 2013

Women Of The River: Grassroots Organizing And Natural Disaster, Larry G. Morton, Samuel R. Terrazas, Matthew G. Herriman

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This study, a sub-study of a larger project, the Missouri Mobile Home Estates Project, examines the grassroots efforts of three women in an impoverished Midwestern river community to improve the lives of the children living there. The women’s efforts included infrastructure improvements, a summer meal program for the children, a food bank, and a thrift shop. This community was devastated by floods in 1973, 1986, and 1993; at these times, crisis intervention services were provided to the residents. Yet, it appears little assistance was offered to the community between these floods, despite the community’s well-publicized crime and poverty. Using a …

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: There are arguably no reliable figures to confirm the formal and informal, legal or illegal ways popular culture products permeate throughout East and Southeast Asia today. Movies, comics, music, games, television programs, and other popular formats have circulated in large waves from a country of origin to others, subsequently creating industries and producing material for fans and, inevitably, data for academic investigators. The Internet and translation through subtitles or voice dubbing have facilitated the appreciation and acceptance of most products. But accommodating and eventually incorporating popular cultural fare from a different country into one’s entertainment rituals is not necessarily …

The Art Of Character Design, Matthew Wilson, Bethanne Andersen Aug 2013

The Art Of Character Design, Matthew Wilson, Bethanne Andersen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

How many people do you know have physical characteristics that match their personality? The idea that a personality and the way a person looks are connected is not new. Illustrators and animators have been capitalizing on it in their work for decades. However, it has just been since the last half of this century that this concept has really taken hold. This idea intrigued me so much that I spent two semesters of my educational experience at Brigham Young University researching, interviewing and learning about the subject.

Deficiencies: Mental Disability And The Imagination In Scott's Waverley Novels, Colin Carman Aug 2013

Deficiencies: Mental Disability And The Imagination In Scott's Waverley Novels, Colin Carman

Studies in Scottish Literature

Argues that Walter Scott's novels, especially Waverley and The Heart of Midlothian, represent a shift in Anglo-scottish attitudes towards the mentally ill, and that mental disability, operating in Scott's novels under the guises of idiocy and insanity, was integral to Scott’s articulations of the romantic imagination.

Development Of Correction Algorithm For Pulsed Terahertz Computed Tomography (Thz-Ct), Suman Mukherjee Aug 2013

Development Of Correction Algorithm For Pulsed Terahertz Computed Tomography (Thz-Ct), Suman Mukherjee

Dissertations

For last couple of decades, there has been a considerable improvement in Terahertz (THz) science, technology, and imaging. In particular, the technique of 3-D computed tomography has been adapted to the THz range. However, it has been widely recognized that a fundamental limitation to THz computed tomography imaging is the refractive effects of the sample under study. The finite refractive index of materials in the THz range can severally refract THz beams which probe the internal structure of a sample during the acquisition of tomography data. Refractive effects lead to anomalously high local absorption coefficients in the reconstructed image near …

A Robot With A Suspended Load: The Statistical Relationship Between Energy Cost And Mass Center Motion, Xingye Da Aug 2013

A Robot With A Suspended Load: The Statistical Relationship Between Energy Cost And Mass Center Motion, Xingye Da

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

In this research, the objective is to reduce energy (or power) consumption for a legged robot and demonstrate a correlation between energy (or power) consumption and center of mass (CoM) motion. The approach used is to experimentally measure and analyze the power consumption and center of mass motion of a legged robot carrying an elastically suspended load. A high-speed motion-tracking camera system was used to capture the robot body and load trajectories, and an analog-to-digital converter was used to record the robot’s average power. By analyzing the frequency content of the trajectories, we found that the center of mass dynamics …
