Cover Crops Impact On Energy And Forage Crops Productivity In North Dakota, Dulan Pravinda Samarappuli Jan 2013

Cover Crops Impact On Energy And Forage Crops Productivity In North Dakota, Dulan Pravinda Samarappuli

Plant Sciences

Forage crops have gained interest as potential source of lignocellulosic feedstock to produce ethanol. More focus is needed on developing cropping systems to improve productivity. This study was conducted to identify the agronomic potential of six different cover crops on five different annual biomass crops. Results indicated that forage pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Arvika) N uptake was 126 kg N ha-1 and was able to fix approximately 60 kg of N ha-1 in only 60 days in the fall. Results across locations indicated that forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench cv. FS-5), and sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench …

Carbohydrate-Based Micro And Nano Scale Materials From Soybean Meal, Distillers Dried Grains, And Sugar Beet Pulp For Food And Other Applications, Nilushni Sivapragasam Jan 2013

Carbohydrate-Based Micro And Nano Scale Materials From Soybean Meal, Distillers Dried Grains, And Sugar Beet Pulp For Food And Other Applications, Nilushni Sivapragasam

Plant Sciences

Study 1 was carried out to isolate and produce enzyme resistant micro and nano scale carbohydrates from soybean meal (SBM), distillers dried grains (DDG), and sugar beet pulp (SBP). All materials produced were in micro and nano scales, and the yields were different depending on the starting material. Study 2 determined the physiological stability of study 1 materials for potential encapsulation applications. Both SBM and SBP were stable under simulated physiological conditions; the stability of the SBM was higher than SBP. In study 3 the SBM nanomaterial from buffer extraction was used for in vitro fermentation by Bifidobacterium brevis. The …

Glycoalkaloid Profiling Of Potato Genotypes From The North Dakota State University Potato Breeding Program, Irene Roman Martinez Jan 2013

Glycoalkaloid Profiling Of Potato Genotypes From The North Dakota State University Potato Breeding Program, Irene Roman Martinez

Plant Sciences

Gylcoalkaloids (GA) are plant secondary metabolites that offer pests and disease resistance. Studies show correlation between GA content and CPB resistance. In this study, CPB resistance was assessed in a field trial at Grand Forks, ND, during 2012 for twenty-four genotypes from the NDSU Potato Breeding Program. Two treatments were applied, a block treated with imidacloprid (Admire®), and an untreated block. The treated block showed decreased CPB damage. Presence of aglycons (non-sugar moiety of GAs) was assessed by gas chromatography in foliar and tuber tissue. Distribution of GAs in the tuber was assessed to determine variation in tuber sections and …

They’Re Planting Stories In The Press: The Impact Of Media Distortions On Sex Offender Law And Policy, Heather Ellis Cucolo, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

Individuals classified as sexual predators are the pariahs of the community. Sex offenders are arguably the most despised members of our society and therefore warrant our harshest condemnation. Twenty individual states and the federal government have enacted laws confining individuals who have been adjudicated as “sexually violent predators” to civil commitment facilities post incarceration and/or conviction. Additionally, in many jurisdictions, offenders who are returned to the community are restricted and monitored under community notification, registration and residency limitations. Targeting, punishing and ostracizing these individuals has become an obsession in society, clearly evidenced in the constant push to enact even more …

A Novel Application Of Motion Analysis For Detecting Stress Responses In Embryos At Different Stages Of Development., Oliver Tills, Tabitha Bitterli, Phil Culverhouse, John I. Spicer, Simon Rundle

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Motion analysis is one of the tools available to biologists to extract biologically relevant information from image datasets and has been applied to a diverse range of organisms. The application of motion analysis during early development presents a challenge, as embryos often exhibit complex, subtle and diverse movement patterns. A method of motion analysis able to holistically quantify complex embryonic movements could be a powerful tool for fields such as toxicology and developmental biology to investigate whole organism stress responses. Here we assessed whether motion analysis could be used to distinguish the effects of stressors on three early developmental stages …

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Abstract

Aims

Central nervous system (CNS) malignancies and/or their treatment in pediatric cancer survivors are known to be associated with deficits in neuropsychological functions. We report findings from a nation-wide study of childhood cancer survivors to investigate intelligence and attention/concentration from a multi-dimensional perspective in a diverse sample from this population.

Main methods

Four hundred forty-four pediatric cancer survivors between 6 and 17 years of age, who had suffered CNS involvement associated with their malignancy, were evaluated. All patients completed a measure of general intelligence. Attention was measured by a continuous performance test (CPT) and by parental report using a …

Probiotic Pediococcus Acidilactici Modulates Both Localised Intestinal- And Peripheral-Immunity In Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus)., B. T. Standen, M. D. Rawling, S. J. Davies, M. Castex, A. Foey, G. Gioacchini, O. Carnevali, D. L. Merrifield

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The application of probiotics in aquaculture has received concerted research efforts but the localised intestinal immunological response of fish to probiotic bacteria is poorly understood. Therefore, a study was conducted to evaluate the probiotic effect of Pediococcus acidilactici on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with specific emphasis on intestinal health and probiotic levels as well as system level responses such as growth performance, feed utilization and haemato-immunological parameters under non-challenged conditions. Fish (9.19 ± 0.04 g) were fed either a control diet or a P. acidilactici supplemented diet (at 2.81 × 10(6) CFU g(-)(1)) for six weeks. At the end of …

Tolerance Of Sponge Assemblages To Temperature Anomalies: Resilience And Proliferation Of Sponges Following The 1997-8 El-Niño Southern Oscillation., Francisco Kelmo, James J. Bell, Martin J. Attrill

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Coral reefs across the world are under threat from a range of stressors, and while there has been considerable focus on the impacts of these stressors on corals, far less is known about their effect on other reef organisms. The 1997-8 El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) had notable and severe impacts on coral reefs worldwide, but not all reef organisms were negatively impacted by this large-scale event. Here we describe how the sponge fauna at Bahia, Brazil was influenced by the 1997-8 ENSO event. Sponge assemblages from three contrasting reef habitats (reef tops, walls and shallow banks) at four sites were …
