Public Land & Resources Law Review
The Montana Supreme Court held that the district court erred as a matter of law and abused its discretion when it granted a preliminary injunction preventing Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks (DFWP) from subsequently transferring some Yellowstone quarantined bison from Ft. Peck tribal lands to Ft. Belknap tribal lands. DFWP did not violate the DFWP-specific statute barring it from transferring bison to “public and private lands” without landowner consent, a management plan, and public hearings because tribal lands are neither public nor private lands. Tribal lands are in a special class, and the United States and Tribes retain …
Zombie Economics: Violence And Economics In Three First-Person Shooter Zombie-Themed Video Games., Brynn S. Shaw
Zombie Economics: Violence And Economics In Three First-Person Shooter Zombie-Themed Video Games., Brynn S. Shaw
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis presents a textual analysis of three zombie-themed video games: Left4Dead, Call of Duty: Zombies, and Killing Floor. The relationship between violence and economics presented in the in-game actions is analyzed to demonstrate that when capitalism is seen as ideological in nature, the zombie-themed games observed can be seen as evidence of the reiteration of that ideology. A gradation of economic systems becomes apparent through a comparison of these video games to the zombie myth presented in film, using a combination of the methods of narrative examination and ludology. The games which imitate the capitalistic market do so by …

Central nervous system tumors carry grave clinical prognoses due to limited effectiveness of surgical resection, radiation, and chemotherapy. Thus, improved strategies for brain tumor visualization and targeted treatment are critically needed. We demonstrate that mouse cerebellar medulloblastoma (MB) can be targeted and illuminated with a fluorescent, engineered cystine knot (knottin) peptide that binds with high affinity to α β , α β , and α β integrin receptors. This integrin-binding knottin peptide, denoted EETI 2.5F, was evaluated as a molecular imaging probe in both orthotopic and genetic models of MB. Following tail vein injection, fluorescence arising from dye-conjugated EETI 2.5F …

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) are high-density lipoprotein–associated (HDL-associated) proteins mechanistically linked to inflammation, oxidant stress, and atherosclerosis. MPO is a source of ROS during inflammation and can oxidize apolipoprotein A1 (APOA1) of HDL, impairing its atheroprotective functions. In contrast, PON1 fosters systemic antioxidant effects and promotes some of the atheroprotective properties attributed to HDL. Here, we demonstrate that MPO, PON1, and HDL bind to one another, forming a ternary complex, wherein PON1 partially inhibits MPO activity, while MPO inactivates PON1. MPO oxidizes PON1 on tyrosine 71 (Tyr71), a modified residue found in human atheroma that is critical for …

Effects Of Environmental Factors And Nutrient Availability On The Biochemical Composition Of Algae For Biofuels Production: A Review, Ankita Juneja, Ruben Michael Ceballos, Ganti S. Murthy
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Due to significant lipid and carbohydrate production as well as other useful properties such as high production of useful biomolecular substrates (e.g., lipids) and the ability to grow using non-potable water sources, algae are being explored as a potential high-yield feedstock for biofuels production. In both natural and engineered systems, algae can be exposed to a variety of environmental conditions that affect growth rate and cellular composition. With respect to the latter, the amount of carbon fixed in lipids and carbohydrates (e.g., starch) is highly influenced by environmental factors and nutrient availability. Understanding synergistic interactions between multiple environmental variables and …

Snp Interactions In The Genetic Architecture Of Blood Pressure, Jacob John Basson
Snp Interactions In The Genetic Architecture Of Blood Pressure, Jacob John Basson
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Evidence suggests that there is a substantial genetic component to the regulation of blood pressure: BP) but most BP variance remains unattributed to specific genetic variants. Candidate gene studies show linkage to rare Mendelian disorders but inconsistent association with BP. Massive consortia of genome-wide association studies have identified several dozen loci explaining less than 3% of BP variance. Many explanations have been offered for these observations, of which the current study addresses two: the focus on SNP main effects to the exclusion of interactions, and the low statistical power resulting from the strong multiple-testing burden necessarily imposed when analyzing millions …

Preserving Moral Recognition In The Face Of Aggression: Aikido As A Practice Of Physical Intersubjectivity, Charles W. Wright
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Practitioners of Aikido advance the claim, peculiar to many, that martial training can support moral action. This essay examines the claim by exploring communicative structures implicit in the response to attack made possible by this art's techniques. This exploration reveals three dimensions of intersubjectivity embedded in the practice of Aikido, dimensions that explicate the ethical imperative of the art.

While a number of studies have measured multivariate sexual selection actingon sexual signals in wild populations, few have confirmed these findings withexperimental manipulation. Sagebrush crickets are ideally suited to such investi-gations because mating imposes an unambiguous phenotypic marker on malesarising from nuptial feeding by females. We quantified sexual selection operat-ing on male song by recording songs of virgin and mated males captured fromthree wild populations. To determine the extent to which selection on malesong is influenced by female preference, we conducted a companion study inwhich we synthesized male songs and broadcast them to females in choicetrials. Multivariate selection analysis revealed …

Demonstration Of Crispr/Cas9/Sgrna-Mediated Targeted Gene Modification In Arabidopsis, Tobacco, Sorghum And Rice, Wen Zhi Jiang, Huanbin Zhou, Honghao Bi, Michael E. Fromm, Bing Yang, Donald P. Weeks
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The type II CRISPR/Cas system from Streptococcus pyogenes and its simplified derivative, the Cas9/ single guide RNA (sgRNA) system, have emerged as potent new tools for targeted gene knockout in bacteria, yeast, fruit fly, zebrafish and human cells. Here, we describe adaptations of these systems leading to successful expression of the Cas9/ sgRNA system in two dicot plant species, Arabidopsis and tobacco, and two monocot crop species, rice and sorghum. Agrobacterium tumefaciens was used for delivery of genes encoding Cas9, sgRNA and a non-fuctional, mutant green fluorescence protein (GFP) to Arabidopsis and tobacco. The mutant GFP gene contained target sites …

In this study, a series of twenty-five ring-substituted 4-arylamino-7-chloroquinolinium chlorides were prepared and characterized. The compounds were tested for their activity related to inhibition of photosynthetic electron transport (PET) in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts and also primary in vitro screening of the synthesized compounds was performed against mycobacterial species. 4-[(2-Bromophenyl)amino]-7-chloroquinolinium chloride showed high biological activity against M. marinum, M. kansasii, M. smegmatis and 7-chloro-4-[(2-methylphenyl)amino]quinolinium chloride demonstrated noteworthy biological activity against M. smegmatis and M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis. The most effective compounds demonstrated quite low toxicity (LD50 > 20 μmol/L) against the human monocytic leukemia THP-1 cell line within preliminary in …
Mutations In The Chaperone Hsp104 Differentially Propagate Yeast Prions, Jennifer Elizabeth Dulle
Mutations In The Chaperone Hsp104 Differentially Propagate Yeast Prions, Jennifer Elizabeth Dulle
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Molecular chaperones are critical elements of the protein quality control network and are responsible for protecting cells from protein misfolding and aggregation. In yeast, molecular chaperones also participate in the propagation of self-replicating, protein-only elements called prions. The AAA+ ATPase Hsp104 is a disaggregase essential for yeast prion maintenance and is responsible for fragmentation of prions to generate the transmissible prion propagons. This work focuses on further understanding the role of Hsp104 in prion propagation and protein aggregate resolubilization. To do this, I first identified novel mutations in Hsp104 which altered [PSI+] propagation and characterized their effects on Hsp104 function, …

An Exploration Of The Lives Of Young, African American Women With Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Sarah Bollinger
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Compared to other subtypes of breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer: TNBC) accounts for a disproportionate number of metastatic cases and cancer deaths. Glaring disparities are present in the occurrence of TNBC, such that those diagnosed are more likely to be African American: prevalence of 26% vs. 16% in non-African Americans) and premenopausal: 24% vs. 15% postmenopausal). A critical factor to consider regarding the disparities associated with TNBC is the evidence documenting the link between psychosocial stress over the life course and the occurrence of large, aggressive tumors that are characteristic of this subtype. Because issues such as crime, isolation, stress, …
Rescue Breathing In Noisy Environments, Brianna Slutsky
Rescue Breathing In Noisy Environments, Brianna Slutsky
Theses
This study considered rhythmic performance of rescue breathing by trained emergency responders and lay persons. Participants were asked to complete rescue breathing in 10 different scenarios. Such scenarios were intended to evaluate the effects of target rhythms and distractors on the responder's ability to administer rescue breathing ventilations at the appropriate rate and rhythm, in accordance with the standards established by the American Red Cross (2011). Current research concerning rhythmic performance with target and distractor rhythms suggests that auditory rhythms, whether target or distractor, have a greater influence on the motor behaviors of the human than visual rhythms. This research …
