Preosteocytes/Osteocytes Have The Potential To Dedifferentiate Becoming A Source Of Osteoblasts, Elena Torreggiani, Brya G. Matthews, Slavica Pejda, Igor Matic, Danka Grcevic, Mark C. Horowitz, Ivo Kalajzic

UCHC Articles - Research

Presently there is no clear evidence for the ability of mature osteogenic lineage cells to dedifferentiate. In order to identify and trace mature osteogenic lineage cells, we have utilized transgenic mouse models in which the dentin matrix protein 1 (Dmp1) promoter drives expression of GFP (active marker) or Cre recombinase (historic label) in preosteocytes/osteocytes. In long bone chip outgrowth cultures, in which cells on the bone surface were enzymatically removed, cells with previous activity of the Dmp1 promoter migrated onto plastic and down-regulated Dmp1-GFP expression. Dmp1Cre-labeled cells from these cultures had the potential to re-differentiate into the osteogenic lineage, while …

Distinguishing The Corporal From The Divine: Legal Fictions Create Bodies Not Souls, Daisy Ayllon Sep 2013

Distinguishing The Corporal From The Divine: Legal Fictions Create Bodies Not Souls, Daisy Ayllon

Seventh Circuit Review

Can a for-profit, secular corporation exercise religion? If so, does the Affordable Care Act's requirement that employer-provided health insurance plans offer women of reproductive age contraceptives violate free exercise rights?

Plaintiffs challenging the "contraceptive mandate," as it is commonly known, argue that it violates their rights under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) because it imposes a substantial burden on their religious exercise without meeting strict scrutiny. Although these challenges do present courts with a novel issue (whether a secular, for-profit corporation is a "person" capable of "exercising religion"), the answer to the broader question should be clear: requiring corporate-provided …

Honor Thy Father And Thy Mother: Religious Accommodation Under Title Vii In Adeyeye V. Heartland Sweeteners, Llc, Zeke Katz

Seventh Circuit Review

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act provides that an employer must reasonably accommodate an employee's request for a leave of absence due to a religious observance or practice, as long as that accommodation does not present an undue hardship for the employer. The amendments to Title VII, and the Guidelines issued by the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission in response to Title VII, reveal a trend towards a broad interpretation of religious accommodation in the workplace. The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals continued and exemplified this trend in Adeyeye v. Heartland Sweeteners, LLC.

In Adeyeye, where an employee …

Plural Policing: The Multifaceted World Of Irish State “Policing” Authorities, Thomas Talbot Sep 2013

Plural Policing: The Multifaceted World Of Irish State “Policing” Authorities, Thomas Talbot

Dissertations

aim of this research was to explore the rather undocumented world of the wider policing community acting in an official capacity on behalf of the Irish state in 2013 and to produce a comprehensive empirical mapping of these governance entities. This group was defined as those operating in a coercive manner at the most extreme end of the social control spectrum and the research therefore focused on those organisations actively prosecuting cases in the Irish courts.

A mixed method design was used to maximise both quantitative and qualitative information. As this mapping exercise was the first of its kind, a …

Integration Of Sustainability In Higher Education: Three Case Studies Of Curricular Implementation, David Gosselin, Rod Parnell, Nicholas J. Smith-Sebasto, Shirley Vincent Sep 2013

Integration Of Sustainability In Higher Education: Three Case Studies Of Curricular Implementation, David Gosselin, Rod Parnell, Nicholas J. Smith-Sebasto, Shirley Vincent

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The integration of sustainability into higher education academic programs is occurring at an accelerated pace in response to international and national imperatives to rethink the way it serves the needs of society. Three case studies from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, Northern Arizona University, and Kean University (NJ) outlines the academic structure, program, resources, the motivation and mechanisms for curricular change, key sustainability-learning outcomes and program goals, curricular changes, and assessment strategies these institutions used to integrate sustainability into their undergraduate curriculum. These three case studies exhibit several commonalities. They emphasize systems thinking and explicitly link human behavior and ecological …

Valuation Of The Ecosystem Services Provided By Coastal Ecosystems In Shandong, China: Developing A Non-Market Valuation System, Stephen Hynes, Rui Zhao, Jing Guo

Working Papers

Based on unique geographical, economic and ecological characteristics, the coastal regions have been serving as the most important supports for human benefits. From food provision, ecosystem regulation, wildlife habitat to various recreational and aesthetic activities, humans have been obtaining direct and indirect well-being from the coastal ecosystems. If properly managed and sustainably protected, these benefits should be translated to human welfare for current and future generations (Brenner, et al., 2010) . The lack of complete understanding of total values obtained from coastal ecosystems, especially the underestimating of ecosystem benefits has led to management failures. As a result, most coastal resources …

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a widespread pathogen in the human population, affecting many immunologically immature and immunocompromised patients, and can result in severe complications, such as interstitial pneumonia and mental retardation. Current chemotherapies for the treatment of HCMV infections include ganciclovir (GCV), foscarnet, and cidofovir. However, the high incidences of adverse effects (neutropenia and nephrotoxicity) limit the use of these drugs. Cyclopropavir (CPV), a guanosine nucleoside analog, is 10-fold more active against HCMV than GCV (50% effective concentrations [EC50s] = 0.46 and 4.1 μM, respectively). We hypothesize that the mechanism of action of CPV is similar to that …

Why Is Ca3 More Vulnerable Than Ca1 In Experimental Models Of Controlled Cortical Impact-Induced Brain Injury?, Haojie Mao, Benjamin S. Elkin, Vinay V. Genthikatti, Barclay Morrison Iii, King H. Yang

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research Publications

One interesting finding of controlled cortical impact (CCI) experiments is that the CA3 region of the hippocampus, which is positioned further from the impact than the CA1 region, is reported as being more injured. The current literature has suggested a positive correlation between brain tissue stretch and neuronal cell loss. However, it is counterintuitive to assume that CA3 is stretched more during CCI injury. Recent mechanical studies of the brain have reported on a level of spatial heterogeneity not previously appreciated—the finding that CA1 was significantly stiffer than all other regions tested and that CA3 was one of the most …

The advent of complete-genome genotyping across phenotype cohorts has provided a rich source of information for bioinformaticians. However the search for SNPs from this data is generally performed on a study-by-study case without any specific hypothesis of the location for SNPs that are predictive for the phenotype. We have designed a method whereby very large SNP lists (several gigabytes in size), combining several genotyping studies at once, can be sorted and traced back to their ultimate consequence in protein structure. Given a working hypothesis, researchers are able to easily search whole genome genotyping data for SNPs that link genetic locations …

Quantification Of Α-Ketoglutarate Cyanohydrin In Swine Plasma By Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Brendan L. Mitchell, Gary A. Rockwood, Brian A. Logue Sep 2013

Quantification Of Α-Ketoglutarate Cyanohydrin In Swine Plasma By Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Brendan L. Mitchell, Gary A. Rockwood, Brian A. Logue

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Determination of exposure to cyanide can be accomplished by direct cyanide analysis or indirectly by analysis of cyanide detoxification products, such as thiocyanate and 2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid. A potentially important marker and detoxification product of cyanide exposure, α-ketoglutarate cyanohydrin (α-KgCN), is produced by the reaction of cyanide and α-ketoglutarate. Therefore, an ultra high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method to determine α-KgCN in plasma was developed. Swine plasma was spiked with α-KgCN and α-KgCN-d4 (internal standard) and proteins were precipitated with 1% formic acid in acetonitrile. After centrifugation, the supernatant was dried, reconstituted, separated by reversed phase high performance liquid …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Poisoning by cyanide can be verified by analysis of the cyanide detoxification product, α-ketoglutarate cyanohydrin (α-KgCN), which is produced from the reaction of cyanide and endogenous α-ketoglutarate. Although α-KgCN can potentially be used to verify cyanide exposure, limited toxicokinetic data in cyanide-poisoned animals are available. We, therefore, studied the toxicokinetics of α-KgCN and compared its behavior to other cyanide metabolites, thiocyanate and 2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (ATCA), in the plasma of 31 Yorkshire pigs that received KCN (4 mg/mL) intravenously (IV) (0.17 mg/kg/min). α-KgCN concentrations rose rapidly during KCN administration until the onset of apnea, and then decreased over time in all …

Getting To Evo-Devo: Concepts And Challenges For Students Learning Evolutionary Developmental Biology, Anna Hiatt, Gregory K. Davis, Caleb Trujillo, Mark Terry, Donald P. French, Rebecca M. Price, Kathryn E. Perez

Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship

To examine how well biology majors have achieved the necessary foundation in evolution, numerous studies have examined how students learn natural selection. However, no studies to date have examined how students learn developmental aspects of evolution (evo-devo). Although evo-devo plays an increasing role in undergraduate biology curricula, we find that instruction often addresses development cursorily, with most of the treatment embedded within instruction on evolution. Based on results of surveys and interviews with students, we suggest that teaching core concepts (CCs) within a framework that integrates supporting concepts (SCs) from both evolutionary and developmental biology can improve evo-devo instruction. We …

A Napoleonic Approach To Climate Change: The Geoengineering Branch, Anthony E. Chavez Sep 2013

A Napoleonic Approach To Climate Change: The Geoengineering Branch, Anthony E. Chavez

Washington and Lee Journal of Energy, Climate, and the Environment

Climate change is an inevitable consequence of human greenhouse gas emissions. Without substantial changes in anthropogenic causes of climate change, there will be severe negative impacts on our planet. Complete abolition of greenhouse gas emissions, however, is not possible, nor will it necessarily stop the negative impacts of climate change. Therefore, substantial research must be done in geoengineering to understand better how we can positively act to avert significant climate change. Given the practical difficulties and potential effects, there must be comprehensive oversight. Currently, differing national laws makes this difficult. Additionally the United States laws do not properly cover climate …

Application Of Neural Network And Its Extension Of Derivative To Problems Of Visual Realism On Web Pages, Lan-Ting Wang, Chang-Franw Lee

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This study utilizes information sciences (i.e., neural networks and extensions) to reduce the burden for investigation of social sciences. Without loss of generality, the visual realism of pictures is utilized as the example to illustrate the proposed research flow chart. Pictures of web pages are important media for conveying meanings of information systems. Visual realism of pictures means the degree of similarity between pictures and real objects, and is an important topic in designing contents of information systems. In this paper, the neural network and its extension of derivative are applied to participants’ preference for visual realism on web pages. …
