International Commercial Arbitration And Competition Law – Selected Legal Issues From The Perspective Of An Arbitrator, Piotr Nowaczyk, Szymon Syp Sep 2013

International Commercial Arbitration And Competition Law – Selected Legal Issues From The Perspective Of An Arbitrator, Piotr Nowaczyk, Szymon Syp

internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)

The subject-matter of this article encompasses selected legal issues on the relationship between international commercial arbitration and competition law. The main perspective used in this paper is that of an arbitrator (clearly being only one of several possible). The paper points to two main issues of universal (international) meaning in response to the following questions: 1) Can (or in fact must) the arbitrator apply competition law (in terms of admissibility of the submission of the dispute to arbitration)? 2) which competition law should the arbitrator apply? The arguments presented in the paper refer to a potential fact scenario of a …

Leukemia-Associated Rhogef (Larg) Is A Novel Rhogef In Cytokinesis And Required For The Proper Completion Of Abscission., Matthew K Martz, Elda Grabocka, Neil Beeharry, Timothy J Yen, Philip B Wedegaertner

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Proper completion of mitosis requires the concerted effort of multiple RhoGEFs. Here we show that leukemia-associated RhoGEF (LARG), a RhoA-specific RGS-RhoGEF, is required for abscission, the final stage of cytokinesis, in which the intercellular membrane is cleaved between daughter cells. LARG colocalizes with α-tubulin at the spindle poles before localizing to the central spindle. During cytokinesis, LARG is condensed in the midbody, where it colocalizes with RhoA. HeLa cells depleted of LARG display apoptosis during cytokinesis with unresolved intercellular bridges, and rescue experiments show that expression of small interfering RNA-resistant LARG prevents this apoptosis. Moreover, live cell imaging of LARG-depleted …

Contextually Teaching Motion Design, Gretchen Caldwell Rinnert Sep 2013

Contextually Teaching Motion Design, Gretchen Caldwell Rinnert

Learn X Design Conference Series

Motion design (also called motion graphics) is an underdeveloped subject within design education. Often taught as part of a separate elective course, housed in a computer lab and taught by graduate students or adjunct faculty, this subject is often associated with long planning hours, tedious software exercises, and inadequate formal results. However, at Kent State University, we believe that motion design has significant value for the design student's education and deserves integration into design curriculum. Integration of motion into curriculum has exponential value: it teaches systems thinking, research skills, and information design. We are entering an exciting time in graphic …

"She Stands For Freedom": A Thematic Unit Plan For 4th And 5th Graders, Jeremiah Sammons Sep 2013

"She Stands For Freedom": A Thematic Unit Plan For 4th And 5th Graders, Jeremiah Sammons

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

According to researchers such as Bell (1984) and Fisher (1991), few activities are more powerful for developing historical empathy than engaging students in role-play. This thematic unit plan for fourth and fifth grade children integrates the learning objectives and skills required by the Common Core standards. It consists of a two-act play, The Golden Door, and sample lesson plans that include assessments. Beginning with the Statue of Liberty, the original theatrical work will introduce numerous historical figures as well as interesting historical tidbits, and familiarize students with famous women (as opposed to men), while also allowing teachers an opportunity to …

Teaching Design Project In Sight Of Design Partnership: A New-Old Way To Teach Design, Flavia Nizia Ribeiro, Roberta Portas, Maria Apparecida Mamede-Neves, Izabel Oliveira, Rita Couto

Learn X Design Conference Series

This work intends to deepen the discussion on Design Partnership. To build this argument we propose a reflection that will be introduced by a bibliographic revision followed by a presentation of different Design concepts. In a second moment, we examine the concept of Design Partnership, and analyze how it occurred in the undergraduated Design programme. The Design Partnership experience is a model of teaching, used in the project disciplines also offered in the first year of the course, the student, a future designer, have to work with a partner in a defined context, and to work with a real problem. …

Palliative Care For The Medically Complex Child, Melanie Anspacher, Neha H. Shah

E-Learning Modules

**From the AAMC website: Contains time-sensitive information that will likely be inaccurate, obsolete, or irrelevant by August 12, 2016**

Children with special health care needs are increasingly prevalent in US hospitals. The pediatric hospitalist is often the primary provider of inpatient care for these patients. The Complex Care Curriculum was developed to provide a multi-modal educational curriculum for providers with the overall goal of improving inpatient care for this population. The curriculum is composed primarily of a series of topic-specific learning modules. This particular resource was created to provide pediatricians with educational materials related to palliative care for the medically …

Antibiotic Thin Films, Timothy Jennings, Jason Nielsen, Brian Ratcliff, Nina Wallace, Xin Zhong Lai, Paul B. Savage

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Nosocomial infections lead to septicemia, a severe problem in the United States. The Savage group has developed a novel class of antibiotics (CSAs) that can be attached to polymers. Invasive medical equipment can be coated with CSA polymers, forming an antibiotic thin film. Testing has shown the ability of CSA polymers to kill bacteria, which will lead to further testing and future use in the medical field.

Connecting After Killing : An Exploration Of The Intersubjective Space Between Therapist And Client When Combat Rests Between Them, Alicia L. Simoni Sep 2013

Connecting After Killing : An Exploration Of The Intersubjective Space Between Therapist And Client When Combat Rests Between Them, Alicia L. Simoni

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study examines how the psychological dimensions of killing in combat manifest in intersubjective space between civilian therapists and service member clients. The investigation is based on interviews with 10 civilian therapists who provide psychotherapy to combat service members who have killed or think they may have killed in combat. The reality of killing in combat renders most individuals both viscerally and existentially uncomfortable, and thus is often turned away from. Civilian psychotherapists are not immune to this. The aim of this study was to explore how therapists' subjectivities—in the form of conscious and unconscious actions, thoughts, and emotions …

Clinicians all had training …

To Hold And To Discipline : A Winnicottian And Foucauldian Examination Of Adolescent Athletics Through The Case Of Friday Night Lights, Westley C. Rutter Sep 2013

To Hold And To Discipline : A Winnicottian And Foucauldian Examination Of Adolescent Athletics Through The Case Of Friday Night Lights, Westley C. Rutter

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study examined the impact of organized team sports participation on adolescent psychosocial functioning and development. Theoretical concepts were illustrated with examples present in the high school football themed television series, Friday Night Lights. Winnicottian theories were used to explain how athletics could facilitate adolescent development and be psychologically reparative for adolescents who experienced early childhood caregiver failures. In contrast, Foucauldian concepts were applied to demonstrate how disciplinary mechanisms in sports may augment the effects of internalized oppression for adolescents of color and economically marginalized adolescents. The study explored the possible impact of sports-based interventions for youth, cautioning social …

The Role Of Outer Membrane Protein A In Anaplasma Marginale Cellular Invasion And Its Potential As A Cross-Protective Antigen, Sarvani Emani Sep 2013

The Role Of Outer Membrane Protein A In Anaplasma Marginale Cellular Invasion And Its Potential As A Cross-Protective Antigen, Sarvani Emani

Theses and Dissertations

Anaplasma phagocytophilum and A. marginale are the etiologic agents of human granulocytic anaplasmosis and bovine anaplasmosis, respectively. Both diseases can be severe, even fatal, and protective vaccines for each are lacking. We recently identified A. phagocytophilum outer membrane protein A (ApOmpA) as being critical for cellular invasion and is expressed during infection of mammalian but not tick cells. Disrupting ApOmpA-host cell interactions significantly inhibits A. phagocytophilum entry into host cells. ApOmpA and its A. marginale ortholog, AM854 (A. marginale OmpA; AmOmpA) exhibit 44% amino acid identity. The ApOmpA invasin domain is highly conserved between both proteins. In this study, we …

A Study Of The Universities Of The Third Age In Hong Kong : An Evaluation Of Elder Academy Model For The Life Long Learning Of Older People, Ka Fai Wong Sep 2013

A Study Of The Universities Of The Third Age In Hong Kong : An Evaluation Of Elder Academy Model For The Life Long Learning Of Older People, Ka Fai Wong

Lingnan Theses

Education aims at the development of knowledge and skills for its own sake and pleasure. People aged over 65 years currently comprise 11% of the Hong Kong population. Such aging population in Hong Kong constitutes a challenge to our society. To be adaptive to changes in the environment, especially in aging, more emphasis is placed on “lifelong learning” than on “lifelong education” for self-fulfillment Active aging is evidently supported as a solution to the impact of aging population. Lifelong learning is an important strategy for enhancing active aging. The provision and process of lifelong learning for older people can take …

Japan As China's 'Other': China's Identity And Policy Towards Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands, Filip Viskupic Sep 2013

Japan As China's 'Other': China's Identity And Policy Towards Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands, Filip Viskupic

Lingnan Theses

This thesis examines contemporary Sino-Japanese relations, in particular the Chinese policy towards the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands following the end of the Cold War. It answers the puzzle of why the territorial dispute emerged as such a divisive issue in the bilateral relations between China and Japan.

This thesis embraces a constructivist perspective of international relations and puts forward the concept of identity. Identity is understood here as the image of individuality and distinctiveness held by a state in international relations and by having an identity is to live and act according to the defining features of identity. Drawing upon discourse analysis …

AIM: As technological interventions treating acute myocardial infarction (MI) improve, post-ischemic heart failure increasingly threatens patient health. The aim of the current study was to test whether FADD could be a potential target of gene therapy in the treatment of heart failure.

METHODS: Cardiomyocyte-specific FADD knockout mice along with non-transgenic littermates (NLC) were subjected to 30 minutes myocardial ischemia followed by 7 days of reperfusion or 6 weeks of permanent myocardial ischemia via the ligation of left main descending coronary artery. Cardiac function were evaluated by echocardiography and left ventricular (LV) catheterization and cardiomyocyte death was measured by Evans blue-TTC …

Blameworthiness, Trustworthiness, And The Second-Personal Standpoint: Foundations For An Ethical Theory Of Accountability, Melvin J. Dubnick Sep 2013

Blameworthiness, Trustworthiness, And The Second-Personal Standpoint: Foundations For An Ethical Theory Of Accountability, Melvin J. Dubnick

Faculty Publications

In this paper I make the case for a theory of accountability. Moreover, I will make the case for an ethical theory of accountability, one that centers our subject in human relationships rather than mechanisms and institutions. The foundation for this effort involves adapting a “second-personal standpoint” elaborated by moral theorist Stephen Darwall, with specific attention to the role of blameworthiness and trustworthiness is establishing an aspirational standard that informs efforts to enhance accountable governance. I contend that efforts to improve or enhance the quality (and integrity) of governance arrangements are driven by a collective ambition to achieve moral accountability …
