Transient And Selective Suppression Of Neural Activity With Infrared Light, Michael W. Jenkins, Hui Lu, Jeffrey M. Mcmanus, Hillel J. Chiel Sep 2013

Transient And Selective Suppression Of Neural Activity With Infrared Light, Michael W. Jenkins, Hui Lu, Jeffrey M. Mcmanus, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

Analysis and control of neural circuitry requires the ability to selectively activate or inhibit neurons. Previous work showed that infrared laser light selectively excited neural activity in endogenous unmyelinated and myelinated axons. However, inhibition of neuronal firing with infrared light was only observed in limited cases, is not well understood and was not precisely controlled. Using an experimentally tractable unmyelinated preparation for detailed investigation and a myelinated preparation for validation, we report that it is possible to selectively and transiently inhibit electrically- initiated axonal activation, as well as to both block or enhance the propagation of action potentials of specific …

Using Snow Fences To Augment Fresh Water Supplies In Shallow Arctic Lakes, Svetlana L. Stuefer Sep 2013

Using Snow Fences To Augment Fresh Water Supplies In Shallow Arctic Lakes, Svetlana L. Stuefer

WERC Project Reports

This project was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) to address environmental research questions specifically related to Alaska’s oil and gas natural resources development. The focus of this project was on the environmental issues associated with allocation of water resources for construction of ice roads and ice pads. Earlier NETL projects showed that oil and gas exploration activities in the U.S. Arctic require large amounts of water for ice road and ice pad construction. Traditionally, lakes have been the source of freshwater for this purpose. The distinctive hydrological regime of northern lakes, caused by …

The Unique Photo-Toxic Properties Of Pyridinium Bis-Retinoid Compounds, Matthew Sparks, Dr. Heidi Vollmer-Snarr

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an ocular disease that currently afflicts approximately 25–30 million people around the globe.1,2 The disease is characterized by the destruction of the macula, the central region of the retina. As the disease progresses, central vision becomes distorted, clouded, and eventually lost entirely.3 Although currently receiving much attention from researchers, the chemical pathway(s) causing the disease have remained elusive. Much research has focused on A2E, the most commonly known photo-toxic compound implicated in AMD pathogenesis.

Winter Activity Of Bats In Cache, Juab And Utah Counties, Utah, Benjamin T. Jones, Dr. Duke S. Rogers Sep 2013

Winter Activity Of Bats In Cache, Juab And Utah Counties, Utah, Benjamin T. Jones, Dr. Duke S. Rogers

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Historically, studies of bat activity have been conducted during spring, summer and fall when migratory bats are most abundant and non-migratory bats are most active. Due to the high energy expenditure required to maintain body temperatures sufficient for flight (Fenton, 1992) and the low availability of aerial insects, (Whitaker and Rissler, 1992) activity levels decline markedly with the onset of winter and the corresponding fall in temperatures. Non-migratory bats conserve energy by hibernating through the winter. However, in previous winter surveys conducted in Southern Utah, five of sixteen species know to occur in that area were netted. (Hasenyager, 1980) Bats …

Identifying Sheep Parentage By Polymorphic Genetic Markers In Suffolk Sheep, Jennifer A. Jerman, Robert L. Park Sep 2013

Identifying Sheep Parentage By Polymorphic Genetic Markers In Suffolk Sheep, Jennifer A. Jerman, Robert L. Park

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Polymorphic genetic markers aid in parentage testing among individuals of the same breed. Suffolk sheep randomly mate and the need for accurate, reliable, and rapid testing for resolution of such mating is mandatory for the animals’ record and further genetic production. Therefore, it is necessary to identify such matings of individuals.

Clinician Perspectives On Using Mindfulness-Baed Therapeutic Intervention When Working With Veterans, Lindsay E. Stonecash Sep 2013

Clinician Perspectives On Using Mindfulness-Baed Therapeutic Intervention When Working With Veterans, Lindsay E. Stonecash

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this research study was to explore clinicians' perspectives on using mindfulness practices with veterans suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other stress-related problems. While applying mindfulness techniques in clinical settings is not new to mental health fields, researchers have yet to agree on an explicit definition of mindfulness, and amid growing support for its efficacy, it remains to be categorized as evidence based practice for PTSD. Due to the high need for more widely available treatment interventions for veterans with PTSD, researchers are exploring the potential for mindfulness to be broadly applicable among populations seeking PTSD …

The Effects Of Bryostatin I On The Progression Of Papillomavirus Dna-Induced Tumors, David J. Hoopes, Dr. Richard Robison, Dr. Beverly Roeder

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The bryostatins are a unique family of at least 13 naturally occurring macrocyclic lactones which have demonstrated considerable anti-neoplastic activity. Bryostatin 1 was isolated by G. R. Pettit from the marine bryozoan Bugula neritina. B. neritina is a colonial filter-feeder commonly know as a sea-mat or false coral and often grows on the docks, rocks and ships of the Pacific Ocean.1

Synthetic Model Of Vocal Folds, Todd C. Groesbeck, Dr. Scott Thomson Sep 2013

Synthetic Model Of Vocal Folds, Todd C. Groesbeck, Dr. Scott Thomson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The influence and treatment of human vocal fold scarring is a topic of great interest to the speech community (clinicians, surgeons, educators, etc). Understanding how voice production occurs “is sought in order to improve predictive, diagnostic, and corrective practices related to vocal fold health” . When a patient undergoes vocal fold surgery, scarring frequently occurs. The same surgery intended to heal the vocal fold thus leaves it damaged; scarring results in impaired vibration and prevents the individual from normal, healthy voice use.

Pathology, East Africa

Cholera remains a significant public health challenge in many sub-Saharan countries including Kenya. We have performed a combination of phylogenetic and phenotypic analysis based on whole genome DNA sequences derived from 40 environmental and 57 clinical V. cholerae from different regions of Kenya isolated between 2005 and 2010. Some environmental and all clinical isolates mapped back onto wave three of the monophyletic seventh pandemic V. cholerae El Tor phylogeny but other environmental isolates were phylogenetically very distinct. Thus, the genomes of the Kenyan V. cholerae O1 El Tor isolates are clonally related to other El Tor V. cholerae isolated elsewhere …

Introducing High School Students To Design And Creative Thinking In A Teaching Lab Environment, Gretchen Caldwell Rinnert, Jillian Coorey Sep 2013

Introducing High School Students To Design And Creative Thinking In A Teaching Lab Environment, Gretchen Caldwell Rinnert, Jillian Coorey

Learn X Design Conference Series

Many students in the United States have limited exposure to design thinking, formal techniques or creative experimentation. For many, a design education begins in college, as one selects their major. Unfortunately, many high school art programs have been eliminated or dramatically reduced, resulting in students receiving less creative exposure and limiting their design preparation before college. Creative problem solving skills are in demand. Sir Ken Robinson, a recognized leader in the development of creativity and innovation, believes our schools are educating students out of their creativity. He argues that we train students to become good workers instead of creative problem …

Protein Kinase Ck2 Phosphorylates And Activates P21-Activated Kinase 1, Yong Jae Shin, Yong-Bae Kim, Jeong-Ho Kim Sep 2013

Protein Kinase Ck2 Phosphorylates And Activates P21-Activated Kinase 1, Yong Jae Shin, Yong-Bae Kim, Jeong-Ho Kim

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Activation of the p21-activated kinase 1 (PAK1) is achieved through a conformational change that converts an inactive PAK1 dimer to an active monomer. In this paper, we show that this change is necessary but not sufficient to activate PAK1 and that it is, rather, required for CK2-dependent PAK1S223 phosphorylation that converts a monomeric PAK1 into a catalytically active form. This phosphorylation appears to be essential for autophosphorylation at specific residues and overall activity of PAK1. A phosphomimetic mutation (S223E) bypasses the requirement for GTPases in PAK1 activation, whereas the constitutive activity of the PAK1 mutant (PAK1H83,86L), postulated to mimic GTPase-induced …

The Tipnis Conflict: Sovereignty, Development, And Indigenous Resistance In Bolivia, Stefanie Wickstrom Sep 2013

The Tipnis Conflict: Sovereignty, Development, And Indigenous Resistance In Bolivia, Stefanie Wickstrom

Political Science Faculty Scholarship

This paper introduces readers to conflict during the presidency of Juan Evo Morales Ayma over construction of a highway through the Isiboro Sécure Indigenous Territory and National Park (TIPNIS) in Bolivia. The Morales government is pursuing the highway project that will facilitate local development tied to the capitalist world-system and serve as a segment of a transcontinental system giving Brazil access to ports on the Pacific Ocean, thereby making engagement in the capitalist world-economy by regional South American power blocs more profitable and enhancing Bolivia’s economic and political status internationally. This development is made possible by the exercise of state …

Faculty Publications

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans secretes ascarosides, structurally diverse derivatives of the 3,6-dideoxysugar ascarylose, and uses them in chemical communication. At high population densities, specific ascarosides, which are together known as the dauer pheromone, trigger entry into the stress-resistant dauer larval stage. In order to study the structure-activity relationships for the ascarosides, we synthesized a panel of ascarosides and tested them for dauer-inducing activity. This panel includes a number of natural ascarosides that were detected in crude pheromone extract, but as yet have no assigned function, as well as many unnatural ascaroside derivatives. Most of these ascarosides, some of which have …
