Noise-Induced Tinnitus Using Individualized Gap Detection Analysis And Its Relationship With Hyperacusis, Anxiety, And Spatial Cognition, Edward Pace, Jinsheng Zhang Sep 2013

Noise-Induced Tinnitus Using Individualized Gap Detection Analysis And Its Relationship With Hyperacusis, Anxiety, And Spatial Cognition, Edward Pace, Jinsheng Zhang

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Research Publications

Tinnitus has a complex etiology that involves auditory and non-auditory factors and may be accompanied by hyperacusis, anxiety and cognitive changes. Thus far, investigations of the interrelationship between tinnitus and auditory and non-auditory impairment have yielded conflicting results. To further address this issue, we noise exposed rats and assessed them for tinnitus using a gap detection behavioral paradigm combined with statistically-driven analysis to diagnose tinnitus in individual rats. We also tested rats for hearing detection, responsivity, and loss using prepulse inhibition and auditory brainstem response, and for spatial cognition and anxiety using Morris water maze and elevated plus maze. We …

Local Attitudes Towards Bear Management After Illegal Feeding And Problem Bear Activity, Sara Dubois, David Fraser Sep 2013

Local Attitudes Towards Bear Management After Illegal Feeding And Problem Bear Activity, Sara Dubois, David Fraser

Wildlife Population Management Collection

The “pot bears” received international media attention in 2010 after police discovered the intentional feeding of over 20 black bears during the investigation of an alleged marijuana-growing operation in Christina Lake, British Columbia, Canada. A two-phase random digit dialing survey of the community was conducted in 2011 to understand local perspectives on bear policy and management, before and after a summer of problem bear activity and government interventions. Of the 159 households surveyed in February 2011, most had neutral or positive attitudes towards bears in general, and supported the initial decision to feed the food-conditioned bears until the autumn hibernation. …

An Analysis Of The Marketing Tactics Used To Influence Millennial Generation Students In Their Decision To Attend A Two-Year Or A Four-Year College, Andrea Stanton Sep 2013

An Analysis Of The Marketing Tactics Used To Influence Millennial Generation Students In Their Decision To Attend A Two-Year Or A Four-Year College, Andrea Stanton

Theses and Dissertations

This study will attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of college recruitment marketing tactics used to influence Millennial Generation students, ages 17 to 22 years old, in their decision to attend either a two-year or a four-year college. Changing demographics and projections indicate a decline in the number of high school graduates within the next three to five years. This shift translates into fewer college applications and more competition among institutions of higher learning making it easier for most students to get accepted into college. The researcher will use focus groups and a survey to examine the perception of community colleges …

The Effects Of Planting Techniques On Maize Grain Yield And Silage Production, Tyler D. Kaufman Sep 2013

The Effects Of Planting Techniques On Maize Grain Yield And Silage Production, Tyler D. Kaufman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a comprehensive analysis of the effects of seed orientation, row direction and planting population on grain yield, kernel composition, and silage yield and composition. Producers are striving to increase profit by efficiently using their available land area to maximize crop production. However, little research is available testing the effect of seed orientation on grain or silage production. Quantifying the impacts of seed orientation and row direction on grain and silage is essential for maximum crop production. Dissemination of the results should benefit grain and silage producer.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of manipulating seed …

Radiological Analysis Of Osteoarthritis In The Mouse Knee Joint, Mark Newcomer, Dr. Robert Seegmiller

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cites that nearly 21 million Americans currently suffer from osteoarthritis (OA) and has recently issued a news release which states that, “Today, 35 million people, 13 percent of the U.S. population, are 65 and older, and more than half of them have radiological evidence of osteoarthritis in at least one joint. By 2030, an estimated 20% of Americans – about 70 million people – will have passed their 65th birthday and will be at increased risk of OA.” Arthritis can present itself in many ways and degrees of severity. Osteoarthritis is by …

The Use Of 13c/12c And 15n/14n Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis To Determine Carnivory Level In Gender Identified Free-Ranging Utah American Black Bears (Ursus Americanus), Eric Olsen, Beverly Roeder

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Stable isotope analysis of carbon (13C/12C or d13C) and nitrogen (15N/14N or d15N) has been shown to provide a more accurate estimate of overall diet in various mammalian species (Sponheimer et al. 2003). This technique was used to determine the amount of vegetation and animal protein in the nutritional uptake of free ranging Utah black bears (Ursus americanus). Samples were obtained from harvested bears taken during the fall 2005 and spring 2006 hunt from various regions of Utah via the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR). Gender was reported by the hunters at time of harvest. Age was determined by …

Reflections On Europe And The Visual Portrayal Of A Culture, Jennie M. Doezie, James C. Christensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The intent and purpose for which this grant was awarded was to assist me in my goal of producing a well-illustrated children’s book. My greatest artistic interest lies in depicting other cultures, and my desire is to educate children of these cultures through my paintings. The original basis for completion of my project entailed accompanying the BYU “Art in Europe” Study Abroad program to Spain and Italy in the spring of 1997. There I was to experience, visually research, and document those countries for seven weeks, under the instruction of my faculty mentor, James C. Christensen. There from I would …

Vitamin K And Omega-3 Fatty Acids In Osteoporosis Treatment, Brandon J. Valgardson, Dr. Robert Davidson Sep 2013

Vitamin K And Omega-3 Fatty Acids In Osteoporosis Treatment, Brandon J. Valgardson, Dr. Robert Davidson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Bone deterioration affects all people. Postmenopausal women are affected more than men. However, the elderly tend to shrink instead of maintain the same height because their bone density is diminishing. Death is a result of severe osteoporosis. Bone mineral growth is said to be increased by pharmacologic levels of vitamin K, supplemented by a diet high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Frequent doses of vitamin K in one’s diet cause the bone mineral density to increase in individuals affected by the disorder. Omega-3 fatty acids decrease the risk for the onset of osteoporosis. This research experiment is based on the hypothesis …

Up-Regulation Of Ddr2 And Mmp13 As A Mechanism Of Osteoarthritis, Allyson Merrell, Kenneth Merrell Sep 2013

Up-Regulation Of Ddr2 And Mmp13 As A Mechanism Of Osteoarthritis, Allyson Merrell, Kenneth Merrell

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Arthritis is a painful, debilitating disease that affects sixty-six million Americans (The Arthritis Foundation 2005). Osteoarthritis (OA) results in joint degeneration caused by cartilage erosion and synovial inflammation. While the causes of OA remain unclear, current evidence suggests that both mechanical and biochemical factors can initiate OA. Since ethical and practical issues limit the availability of human tissue in OA research it is necessary to use animal models. Mice with the disproportionate micromelia mutation (Dmm) exhibit histological characteristics similar to those of humans with OA. Current research suggests the heterozygous Dmm mouse (D/+) is a valid model for early-onset OA …

Characterization Of A Cdna Encoding Β-Amyrin Synthase Involved In Saponin Biosyntheses In Chenopodium Quinoa, Derrick J. Reynolds, Dr. P. Jeff Maughan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) is an important crop for subsistence farmers in the Altiplano (high plains) of Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. Quinoa has the potential to be an effective crop for many temperate and highland-tropical regions due to its ability to thrive in drought, saline and high-altitude conditions. The nutritional value of quinoa has been well documented. Several analyses have confirmed that quinoa grain has an excellent balance of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins and provides an ideal balance of essential amino acids for human nutrition.1 Quinoa grain also has a seed coating consisting of various saponins. Saponins are waxy, soap-like …

Biology Faculty Publications

We have translated a powerful genetic tool, designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADDs), from mammalian systems to Drosophila melanogaster to selectively, rapidly, reversibly, and dose-dependently control behaviors and physiological processes in the fly. DREADDs are muscarinic acetylcholine G protein-coupled receptors evolved for loss of affinity to acetylcholine and for the ability to be fully activated by an otherwise biologically inert chemical, clozapine-N-oxide. We demonstrate its ability to control a variety of behaviors and processes in larvae and adults, including heart rate, sensory processing, diurnal behavior, learning and memory, and courtship. The advantages of this particular technology include the …

The Role Of Nitric Oxide Dysregulation In Tumor Maintenance, Christopher Rabender Sep 2013

The Role Of Nitric Oxide Dysregulation In Tumor Maintenance, Christopher Rabender

Theses and Dissertations

The inflammatory nature of the tumor microenvironment provides a cytokine and chemokine rich proliferative environment. Much of the responsibility of this environment is due to the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). These studies examined the proliferative rich tumor environment from a new perspective of Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) dysregulation. NOS’s have the ability to become uncoupled and generate superoxide in lieu of nitric oxide (NO). A requirement of NOS for the production of NO is the cofactor tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) and when it is missing NOS becomes uncoupled and turns into a peroxynitrite synthase. Here I demonstrate that NOS is …

Ultrasonic Incisions Produce Less Inflammatory Mediator Response During Early Healing Than Electrosurgical Incisions., Bindu Nanduri, Ken Pendarvis, Leslie A. Shack, Ranjit Kumar, Jeffrey W. Clymer, Donna L. Korvick, Shane C. Burgess

CVM Publications

As the use of laparoscopic surgery has become more widespread in recent years, the need has increased for minimally-invasive surgical devices that effectively cut and coagulate tissue with reduced tissue trauma. Although electrosurgery (ES) has been used for many generations, newly-developed ultrasonic devices (HARMONIC? Blade, HB) have been shown at a macroscopic level to offer better coagulation with less thermally-induced tissue damage. We sought to understand the differences between ES and HB at a microscopic level by comparing mRNA transcript and protein responses at the 3-day timepoint to incisions made by the devices in subcutaneous fat tissue in a porcine …
