Why Communication Rights Are Essential To The Protection And Advancement Of Human Rights In The 21st Century, Andy Valeri Oct 2013

Why Communication Rights Are Essential To The Protection And Advancement Of Human Rights In The 21st Century, Andy Valeri

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Communication is an intrinsically fundamental process to our being human. The very defining of our humanity, and our ability to fulfill all of our essential needs and capabilities is dependent upon it. The right to it is recognized as a fundamentally human one in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as within numerous internationally recognized constitutions and covenants. However, the human rights community - its scholars, practitioners, advocates, and organizations – have devoted insufficient attention to the importance of this process, and its implications for making possible any truly effective progress in the ongoing efforts to advance human …

"In Delaware The Millennium Has Begun": 19th-Century Farmstead Archaeology And The Methodist Discipline, Michael D. Scholl

Northeast Historical Archaeology

By the beginning of the 19th century the Methodist movement had gained so many converts in the state of Delaware that Francis Asbury had likened it to the coming of the New Millenium. The growth of Methodism I the state was a powerful social force in rural 19th-century Delaware. Guidlines and behavioral rules were published annually in a series entitled the Discipline. The Methodist Discipline provides a contextual backdrop for understanding 19th-century farming families. This case study examines the Methodist farmer George W. Buchanan and his family who in the mid-part of the century established a farmstead in southern New …

Development Of A Conditional Mesd (Mesoderm Development) Allele For Functional Analysis Of The Low-Density Lipoprotein Receptor-Related Family In Defined Tissues, Andrew V. Taibi, Janet K. Lighthouse, Richard C. Grady, Kenneth R. Shroyer, Bernadette Holdener

Department of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The Low-density lipoprotein receptor-Related Protein (LRP) family members are essential for diverse processes ranging from the regulation of gastrulation to the modulation of lipid homeostasis. Receptors in this family bind and internalize a diverse array of ligands in the extracellular matrix (ECM). As a consequence, LRPs regulate a wide variety of cellular functions including, but not limited to lipid metabolism, membrane composition, cell motility, and cell signaling. Not surprisingly, mutations in single human LRPs are associated with defects in cholesterol metabolism and development of atherosclerosis, abnormalities in bone density, or aberrant eye vasculature, and may be a contributing factor in …

Thomas Jeckyll, James Mcneill Whistler, And The Harmony In Blue And Gold: The Peacock Room: A Re-Examination, Cynthia Fischer Oct 2013

Thomas Jeckyll, James Mcneill Whistler, And The Harmony In Blue And Gold: The Peacock Room: A Re-Examination, Cynthia Fischer

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation uncovers three previously unrecognized innovations of Thomas Jeckyll in the Peacock Room. At the same time, the dissertation admits that sometimes James McNeill Whistler chose a more conventional path in the design of the room than previously acknowledged. The dissertation illuminates the often overlooked principle of Classical Decor, first described in the first century BC by Vitruvius, and analyzes how it was instituted in the Peacock Room. Four major points illustrate this conclusion. First, the meaning of the sunflower in the West is explored to account for the flower’s popularity and absorption into ancient heliotropic lore. Thomas Moore’s …

Predicting The Behavioral Impact Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation: Issues And Limitations, Archy O. De Berker, Marom Bikson, Sven Bestmann Oct 2013

Predicting The Behavioral Impact Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation: Issues And Limitations, Archy O. De Berker, Marom Bikson, Sven Bestmann

Publications and Research

The transcranial application of weak currents to the human brain has enjoyed a decade of widespread use, providing a simple and powerful tool for non-invasively altering human brain function. However, our understanding of current delivery and its impact upon neural circuitry leaves much to be desired. We argue that the credibility of conclusions drawn with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is contingent upon realistic explanations of how tDCS works, and that our present understanding of tDCS limits the technique’s use to localize function in the human brain. We outline two central issues where progress is required: the localization of currents, …

Camels are the most valuable livestock species in the Horn of Africa and play a pivotal role in the nutritional sustainability for millions of people. Their health status is therefore of utmost importance for the people living in this region. Streptococcus agalactiae, a Group B Streptococcus (GBS), is an important camel pathogen. Here we present the first epidemiological study based on genetic and phenotypic data from African camel derived GBS. Ninety-two GBS were characterized using multilocus sequence typing (MLST), capsular polysaccharide typing and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing. We analysed the GBS using Bayesian linkage, phylogenetic and minimum spanning tree …

Grief Lives Online: An Empirical Study Of Kübler-Ross' Categories Of Bereavement On Myspace Profiles, Ilona Yurivna Malenkovich

Dissertations and Theses

With the widespread use of the Internet, grief has been extended in its representation. Specifically, social networking sites, like MySpace, have turned grief presentation from private expressions into public displays of mourning. This study utilizes the theoretical foundations of the grief presentation process of Kübler-Ross' (1969) five categories of bereavement (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance) to determine whether the grief presentation process is present in an online setting. In this study, the researcher conducted an empirical investigation of 4,931 comments, resulting in 22,263 bereavement themes outlined by Kübler-Ross, which were condensed into 2,288 time-point comparisons posted to 140 MySpace …

Background: Leptospira-induced macrophage death has been confirmed to play a crucial role in pathogenesis of leptospirosis, a worldwide zoonotic infectious disease. Intracellular free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) elevation induced by infection can cause cell death, but [Ca2+]i changes and high [Ca2+]i-induced death of macrophages due to infection of Leptospira have not been previously reported.

Methodology/Principal Findings: We first used a Ca2+-specific fluorescence probe to confirm that the infection of L. interrogans strain Lai triggered a significant increase of [Ca2+]i in mouse J774A.1 or human THP-1 macrophages. Laser confocal microscopic examination …

A Source Of Terrestrial Organic Carbon To Investigate The Browning Of Aquatic Ecosystems, Jay T. Lennon, Stephen K. Hamilton, Mario E. Muscarella, A. Stuart Grandy, Kyle Wickings, Stuart E. Jones

Faculty Publications

There is growing evidence that terrestrial ecosystems are exporting more dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to aquatic ecosystems than they did just a few decades ago. This “browning” phenomenon will alter the chemistry, physics, and biology of inland water bodies in complex and difficult-to-predict ways. Experiments provide an opportunity to elucidate how browning will affect the stability and functioning of aquatic ecosystems. However, it is challenging to obtain sources of DOC that can be used for manipulations at ecologically relevant scales. In this study, we evaluated a commercially available source of humic substances (“Super Hume”) as an analog for natural sources …

Disjointed Cosmopolitanism: Climate Change And Lived Experience In Portland, Oregon, Stephen Wayne Flinn Oct 2013

Disjointed Cosmopolitanism: Climate Change And Lived Experience In Portland, Oregon, Stephen Wayne Flinn

Dissertations and Theses

Climate change has emerged as one of the most significant issues facing the world. This research endeavored to uncover and describe the lived experience of Portland, Oregon residents in relation to the substantive issue of climate change. The specific purpose of this research was to gain a better understanding of the ways that Portland residents conceive of and communicate about climate change. Utilizing semi-structured phenomenological interviews, particular attention was paid to the culture of Portland residents, their lived experience and how the issue of climate change manifests itself in their everyday experiences. In addition, this particular phenomenological inquiry incorporated elements …

Borges And The Basques: Notes On Reading An Invisible Literature, David Laraway Oct 2013

Borges And The Basques: Notes On Reading An Invisible Literature, David Laraway

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

Critics and readers sometimes unnecessarily limit the scope of what is to be counted as “Basque literature” to texts originally composed in Euskera. In the present study I argue for a hermeneutics of Basque literature that does not seek to identify Basque literature by means of the language of composition, theme, or any particular biographical information about the author. Taking the work of Jorge Luis Borges as a touchstone—and , in particular, his canonical short story, “Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote”—I sketch a strategy for reading Basque literature from a minimalist perspective that takes the identity of a …
