Release Of A Wound-Healing Agent From Plga Microspheres In A Thermosensitive Gel, H. A. Machado, J. J. Abercrombie, T. You, Patrick P. Deluca, K. P. Leung

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The purpose of this research was to develop a topical microsphere delivery system in a thermosensitive 20% poloxamer 407 gel (Pluronic F127) to control release of KSL-W, a cationic antimicrobial decapeptide, for a period of 4-7 days for potential application in combat related injuries. KSL-W loaded microsphere formulations were prepared by a solvent extraction-evaporation method (water-oil-water), with poly (D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) (50 : 50, low-weight, and hydrophilic end) as the polymeric system. After optimization of the process, three formulations (A, B, and C) were prepared with different organic to water ratio of the primary emulsion while maintaining other components and …

Consumer Animosity And Purchase Behavior : The Role Of Corporate Social Responsibility, Chun Zhang Oct 2013

Consumer Animosity And Purchase Behavior : The Role Of Corporate Social Responsibility, Chun Zhang

Lingnan Theses

Consumer animosity may have a negative impact on consumers’ purchase behavior for foreign products. The consequences of the negative influence include boycotting and reluctant to purchase. This study explores the research on consumer animosity and focuses on how to attenuate the negative effect of consumer animosity towards consumers’ purchase behavior. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is considered to have a moderating effect on the relationship between consumer animosity and purchase intention. In addition, individual thinking styles are expected to influence the moderating role of CSR. In this study, a 2 (consumer animosity: high vs. low) x 2 (CSR: high vs. low) …

Interpreting Social Organization At Industrial Sites: An Example From The Ohio Trap Rock Mine, David B. Landon Oct 2013

Interpreting Social Organization At Industrial Sites: An Example From The Ohio Trap Rock Mine, David B. Landon

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Historical archaeologists have frequently tried to interpret aspects of the social organization of production from artifacts at industrial sites. These studies have encompassed a variety of issues: the role of skilled immigrants, the effects of de-skilling work, and the ways workers resisted work discipline or used material culture to express their autonomy. Some recent studies protray the organization of production and the forces of industrialization as the overarching determinants of domestic assemblage pattering, while other studies emphasize factors such as household composition, household lifecycle, and the gender organization of labor. This paper reviews several studies of artifact assemblages from industrial …

Who's Been Drinking On The Railroad? Archaeological Excavations At The Central Railroad Of New Jersey's Lakehurst Shops, Richard Veit, Paul W. Schopp Oct 2013

Who's Been Drinking On The Railroad? Archaeological Excavations At The Central Railroad Of New Jersey's Lakehurst Shops, Richard Veit, Paul W. Schopp

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Archaeological excavations at the former shops of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, in Lakehurst (28-Oc-138), uncovered several large bottle caches within a 19th-century railroad maintenance facility. These caches, situated in clandestine locations within the plant, apparently reflect a considerable amount of on-the-job alcohol consumption by railroad workers. This surprising discovery and its implications for understanding turn-of-the-century workplace culture are explored.

Seventeenth-Century Portuguese Faianca And Its Presence In Colonial America, Charlotte Wilcoxen Oct 2013

Seventeenth-Century Portuguese Faianca And Its Presence In Colonial America, Charlotte Wilcoxen

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Nineteenth- and 20th-century writers deprecated Portugal's 17th-century ceramics, and some American archaeologists have not recognized the quantity or quality of the remains of these on east coast American colonial sites, or learned to identify the sherds. Civil War in England in the 1640s deprived that country's colonies of critical economic support during those years; the colonists were forced to build ships and engage in their own trade with European countries. Colony by colony, this is examined; Sphardic Jewish merchants from Portugal living here at times promoted the trade, as well as American factors living in Portugal or its islands. The …

Inception And Ibn 'Arabi, Oludamini Ogunnaike Oct 2013

Inception And Ibn 'Arabi, Oludamini Ogunnaike

Journal of Religion & Film

Many philosophers, playwrights, artists, sages, and scholars throughout the ages have entertained and developed the concept of life being a "but a dream." Few works, however, have explored this topic with as much depth and subtlety as the 13thC Andalusian Muslim mystic, Ibn 'Arabi. Similarly, few works of art explore this theme as thoroughly and engagingly as Chistopher Nolan's 2010 film Inception. This paper presents the writings of Ibn 'Arabi and Nolan's film as a pair of mirrors, in which one can contemplate the other. As such, the present work is equally a commentary on the film based on …

Go With Peace Jamil - Affirmation And Challenge Of The Image Of The Muslim Man, Sofia Sjö Oct 2013

Go With Peace Jamil - Affirmation And Challenge Of The Image Of The Muslim Man, Sofia Sjö

Journal of Religion & Film

Lately, several studies have looked at how Muslims are represented in film. This article takes a Scandinavian perspective on the topic and presents an analysis of masculinity and Islam in the Danish action drama Go with Peace Jamil. First an introduction to Islam in film in the western world in general and in Scandinavia in particular is presented, after which Go with Peace Jamil is discussed as a film that affirms some of the problematic images of Muslim men in film, but also challenges these images. As in so many other western films, Muslim men in Go with Peace …

With An Eye On A Set Of New Eyes: Beasts Of The Southern Wild, Kette Thomas Oct 2013

With An Eye On A Set Of New Eyes: Beasts Of The Southern Wild, Kette Thomas

Journal of Religion & Film

This article focuses on how, Beasts of the Southern Wild, represents both divergence and transgression from paradigmatic structures that determine how certain visual representations are to be used. Specifically, the cinematic detours taken by the filmmakers, Lucy Alibar and Behn Zeitlin, do not lead to alien places for most viewers; on the contrary, ancient myths, legends, heroes and prehistoric references are recalled in total isolation from current social and political discourse. In this way, Beasts of the Southern Wild, effectively, highlights mythological structures operating in contemporary American society. Mircea Eliade, Roger Caillois and G.S. Kirk define mythology as a …

Fire, Water And The Goddess: The Films Of Deepa Mehta And Satyajit Ray As Critiques Of Hindu Patriarchy, David F. Burton Oct 2013

Fire, Water And The Goddess: The Films Of Deepa Mehta And Satyajit Ray As Critiques Of Hindu Patriarchy, David F. Burton

Journal of Religion & Film

This article focuses on Fire (1996) and Water (2005), two films directed by Deepa Mehta that present patriarchal Hindu attitudes to women and sexuality as in need of reform. Mehta’s films have met with hostility from Hindu conservatives and have also been accused of Orientalist misrepresentations. While these objections highlight the contested nature of “authentic” Hindu identity, Fire and Water remain powerful indictments of male hegemony in Hinduism. Mehta has cited Satyajit Ray as a major influence on her work; there are interesting parallels between Mehta’s films and Ray’s film Devi (The Goddess, 1960), which explores the plight …

Waiting For The Second Coming: The Canterbury Shakers, An Archaeological Perspective On Blacksmithing And Pipe Smoking, David R. Starbuck Oct 2013

Waiting For The Second Coming: The Canterbury Shakers, An Archaeological Perspective On Blacksmithing And Pipe Smoking, David R. Starbuck

Northeast Historical Archaeology

While the Shakers are primarily known for their religious beliefs, their lives have also reflected a fascination with technological innovation and a desire for self-sufficiency in certain manufactures. Over the past six years, excavations have been conducted at the Shaker Village in Canterbury, New Hampshire, into the remains of two Shaker blacksmith shops, one of which was accompanied by a waster dump filled with redware tobacco pipes, indicating that this had been a site of pipe manufacture. This was the very first evidence that the Canterbury Shakers had engaged in pipemaking, probably prior to the Shaker prohibition upon tobacco in …

From The Dust Bowl To Frederick Manfred’S The Golden Bowl—A Journeyman’S Masterpiece, Randi Eldevik Oct 2013

From The Dust Bowl To Frederick Manfred’S The Golden Bowl—A Journeyman’S Masterpiece, Randi Eldevik

Western Writers Online

The time and place of Frederick Manfred’s birth—1912, on a farm in a corner of northwestern Iowa close to the South Dakota and Minnesota borders—gave him several perspectives on American life, resulting in the creation of several kinds of fiction. Manfred’s most celebrated novels, the five Buckskin Man tales, take place in the nineteenth century and have a wild west (mostly South Dakota) setting: they arose out of Manfred’s awareness of the dramatic and tumultuous events that had occurred near his home during the hundred years before his birth. But Manfred’s own childhood and youth in a settled agricultural community …

Neighborhoods Have Little Effect On Fungal Attack Or Insect Predation Of Developing Seeds In A Grassland Biodiversity Experiment, Noelle G. Beckman, Ray Dybzinski, G. David Tilman Oct 2013

Neighborhoods Have Little Effect On Fungal Attack Or Insect Predation Of Developing Seeds In A Grassland Biodiversity Experiment, Noelle G. Beckman, Ray Dybzinski, G. David Tilman

Biology Faculty Publications

Numerous observational studies have documented conspecific negative density-dependence that is consistent with the Janzen–Connell Hypothesis (JCH) of diversity maintenance. However, there have been few experimental tests of a central prediction of the JCH: that removing host-specific enemies should lead to greater increases in per capita recruitment in areas of higher host density or lower relative phylogenetic diversity. Using spatially randomized plots of high and low host biomass in a temperate grassland biodiversity experiment, we treated developing seedheads of six prairie perennials to factorial applications of fungicide and insecticide. We measured predispersal seed production, seed viability, and seedling biomass. Results were …
