The Involvement Of Secondary Messengers In Plant Receptor-Like Kinase Signal Transduction, Yichen Zhao
The Involvement Of Secondary Messengers In Plant Receptor-Like Kinase Signal Transduction, Yichen Zhao
Doctoral Dissertations
In plant signaling networks, plasmalemma localized leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinases (LRR-RLKs) are involved in signal perception and initiation of cytosolic signal transduction cascades that alter cell function. Little is currently known about the molecular mechanisms involved in the translation of ligand binding to any LRR-RLK into the initiation of a cytosolic signal. This dissertation presents studies with BRI1, PEPR1, and FLS2; LRR-RLKs involved with hormone perception and plant immunity. The ligands for these receptors are the steroid hormone brassinosteroid (BR), an endogenous plant elicitor peptide ‘Peps’, and the bacteria flagellin (flg) protein, respectively. Binding of BR, Peps, and flg22 to …

Are Characiform Fishes Gondwanan In Origin? Insights From A Time-Scaled Molecular Phylogeny Of The Citharinoidei (Ostariophysi: Characiformes), Jairo Arroyave, John S. S. Denton, Melanie L. J. Stiassny
Publications and Research
Fishes of the order Characiformes are a diverse and economically important teleost clade whose extant members are found exclusively in African and Neotropical freshwaters. Although their transatlantic distribution has been primarily attributed to the Early Cretaceous fragmentation of western Gondwana, vicariance has not been tested with temporal information beyond that contained in their fragmentary fossil record and a recent time-scaled phylogeny focused on the African family Alestidae. Because members of the suborder Citharinoidei constitute the sister lineage to the entire remaining Afro-Neotropical characiform radiation, we inferred a time-calibrated molecular phylogeny of citharinoids using a popular Bayesian approach to molecular dating …

Emerging Trends For Radioimmunotherapy In Solid Tumors., Maneesh Jain, Suprit Gupta, Sukhwinder Kaur, Moorthy P. Ponnusamy, Surinder K. Batra
Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Due to its ability to target both known and occult lesions, radioimmunotherapy (RIT) is an attractive therapeutic modality for solid tumors. Poor tumor uptake and undesirable pharmacokinetics, however, have precluded the administration of radioimmunoconjugates at therapeutically relevant doses thereby limiting the clinical utility of RIT. In solid tumors, efficacy of RIT is further compromised by heterogeneities in blood flow, tumor stroma, expression of target antigens and radioresistance. As a result significant efforts have been invested toward developing strategies to overcome these impediments. Further, there is an emerging interest in exploiting short-range, high energy α-particle emitting radionuclides for the eradication of …

The Sexy Issue: Visual Expressions Of Heteronormativity And Gender Identities In Cosmopolitan Magazine, Michael J. Saraceno, Rachel B. Tambling
The Qualitative Report
The current study used a qualitative image analysis to explore observed interactional behaviors communicated through images printed in Cosmopolitan magazine during the calendar year of 2009 as a means to infer social values . Two general inquiries were used to guide the manner with which behavior was observed: is a heteronormative bias present and what values regarding the expressions of sexual orientation and gender identities can be inferred from these images. The sample consisted of 722 individual images depicting groups of two or more persons. Images were coded for group gender composition, activities engaged in, and physical touch . Results …

A Comparison Of The Impact Of A Heart-Healthy Diet Versus Paleolithic Nutrition On Hyperlipidemia In Adults, Robert Pastore
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Paleolithic nutrition can optimize serum lipids in adults with hyperlipidemia who have been on a heart-healthy diet based on the current recommendations by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (the Academy) or the American Heart Association (AHA). Twenty subjects (10 male and 10 female) age 40 to 62 were selected based on the criteria of a diagnosis of hypercholesterolemia. Subjects were not taking any cholesterol lowering medication and had followed a calorie-controlled diet, based on either the dietary principles of the Academy or the AHA, for at least four months followed by a Paleolithic diet for four months. Multivariate analysis …
Applying Design To Learning: Cognitive Science Supports Visual Language Principles In The Design Of Effective Reading Materials, Lou Tetlan

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
For over fifty years, Catholic nongovernmental organizations have been actively engaged in the promotion and protection of human rights around the world. From grassroots training programs to targeted advocacy work in Geneva, these organizations are helping to shape both scholarly discourse and political policy.
Given the growing role played by civil society actors, this paper will critically consider the ethical and theological significance of human rights NGOs, in particular Catholic organizations, in three parts. It will begin with a brief sketch of the present reality and historical relationship of Catholic NGOs to the human rights movements. Following Vatican II and …
