Feeding World’S Hungry-Food Security Or Food Sovereignty, Vinod Raina
Feeding World’S Hungry-Food Security Or Food Sovereignty, Vinod Raina
South South Forum 南南論壇
The increased wealth creation by nations stands in contrast with the extent of hunger around the World. By hunger we simply mean the want or scarcity of food in a country. The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) estimates that 925 million people in the World are hungry. Against a total World population of 6.8 billion, this means 1 out of every 7 in the World goes hungry. Most of them live in developing countries, and sixty-five percent of them live in only seven countries: China,India,Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of Congo,Indonesia,PakistanandEthiopia(FAO, 2011). Furthermore, each year more people die due to hunger …
Economic Resilience : Including A Case Study Of The Global Transition Network, Julie Richardson
Economic Resilience : Including A Case Study Of The Global Transition Network, Julie Richardson
South South Forum 南南論壇
This paper explores the dynamic properties of organisms and ecosystems that make them so resilient and capable of adapting to changing circumstances, allowing them to maintain an overall condition of coherence, wholeness and health while living in balance within the resources of the planet. Key principles of resilient ecological systems are explored including: self-regulation; positive and negative feedback; diversity; scale and context; cooperation; emergence and novelty; and ecological tipping points. In contrast, market based economic systems can produce unstable growth with unintended destruction of cultural and species diversity and homogenisation of global life-styles. The paper re-examines fundamental economic principles using …

Contemporary capitalism is a capitalism of generalized monopolies. By this I mean that monopolies are now no longer islands (albeit important) in a sea of other still relatively autonomous companies, but are an integrated system. Therefore, these monopolies now tightly control all the systems of production. Small and medium enterprises, and even the large corporations that are not strictly speaking oligopolies are locked in a network of control put in place by the monopolies. Their degree of autonomy has shrunk to the point that they are nothing more than subcontractors of the monopolies. This system of generalized monopolies is the …

主权外部性与币缘战略 : 关于发展陷阱的案例研究 = Sovereignty Externalities And Currency-Strategy Development Trap Case Studies, Tiejun Wen

Based on an understanding that the crises of core nations are being transferred to developing countries and thus globalized, two perspectives are highlighted here: first, the development trap most developing countries are caught in due to “cost transfer” by advanced countries can be attributed to the negative externalities of having lost part of their resources and economic sovereignty in the transaction with their former suzerains for gaining “legitimate” independence; second, the currency-strategy of political dominance by the super power in contemporary financial capitalism is different from traditional geo-strategy in the age of industrial capitalism. In the …

Intraspecific Genetic Variability In Temperature Tolerance In The Coral Pocillopora Damicornis: Effects On Growth, Photosynthesis And Survival, Phillip Gillette
Open Access Theses
Coral reef ecosystems worldwide are in decline as a result of climate change and other anthropogenic impacts. Prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures are predicted to occur more frequently in the future, resulting in coral bleaching and/or mortality. Different coral colonies within a species often show variation in both bleaching and mortality when exposed to temperature stress, but whether this is a result of genetic differences in the coral host, or its algal symbiont communities, is not clear. To distinguish these influences, the effect of different temperatures (20, 26, 30 and 32ºC) on four different genotypes of Pocillopora damicornis (identified using …

Changes In Thermospheric Temperature Induced By High-Speed Solar Wind Streams, Larry Gardner, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, Rod Heelis

During high-speed stream (HSS) events the solar wind speed increases, and the cross polar cap potential increases, leading to increased Joule heating at high latitudes. The heat input at high latitudes heats the polar regions, which then conducts to lower latitudes, producing global heating. The heating occurs during the risetime of the cross polar cap potential and throughout the period of high cross polar cap potential as seen in our simulation. These simulations are performed using the Utah State University global thermosphere model driven by Joule heating rates that are consistent with electric fields observed by DMSP-15 observations of HSS …

Influence Of Volatile Degassing On Initial Flow Structure And Entrainment During Undersea Volcanic Fire Fountaining Eruptions, P. D. Friedman, Steven Carey, M. Raessi

Release of dissolved volatiles during submarine fire fountaining eruptions can profoundly influence the buoyancy flux at the vent. Theoretical considerations indicate that in some cases buoyant magma can be erupted prior to fragmentation (~75% vesicle volume threshold). Laboratory simulations using immiscible fluids of contrasting density indicate that the structure of the source flow at the vent depends critically on the relative magnitudes of buoyancy and momentum fluxes as reflected in the Richardson number (Ri). Analogue laboratory experiments of buoyant discharges demonstrate a variety of complex flow structures with the potential for greatly enhanced entrainment of surrounding seawater. Such conditions are …
Comparing Theory And Experiment For Analyte Transport In The First Vacuum Stage Of The Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, Matthew R. Zachreson
Comparing Theory And Experiment For Analyte Transport In The First Vacuum Stage Of The Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, Matthew R. Zachreson
Theses and Dissertations
The Direct Simulation Monte Carlo algorithm as coded in FENIX is used to model the transport of trace ions in the first vacuum stage of the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Haibin Ma of the Farnsworth group at Brigham Young University measured two radial trace density profiles: one 0.7 mm upstream of the sampling cone and the other 10 mm downstream. We compare simulation results from FENIX with the experimental results. We find that gas dynamic convection and diffusion are unable to account for the experimentally-measured profile changes from upstream to downstream. Including discharge quenching and ambipolar electric fields, however, …

The Use Of Infliximab To Control Recurrent Cytokine Storms In Ebv-Associated Angioimmunoblastic Lymphoma And Hemophagocytic Syndrome, Sameh Gaballa, Emmanuel Besa, Onder Alpdogan
Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
Introduction: Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection (CAEBV) has been implicated in several diseases including hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH) and lymphomas including Angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma. The exact mechanism by which EBV infection causes these complications is currently not well understood. EBV-HLH is a syndrome in which T-cells, NK cells and macrophages are aberrantly activated. Cytokine storms play a major role in cellular damage and organ dysfunction. In the event that the body is unable to clear the EBV viremia, dysregulated T, NK cells and macrophages continue to release cytokines leading to the accumulation of lymphohistiocytic infiltrates into organs and organ damage. …

We used structural equation modeling to explore associations between inhibitory maternal gatekeeping attitudes, reports of inhibitory maternal gatekeeping behaviors, maternal psychological control, observed mother–adolescent warmth, and adolescent reports of maternal involvement. Our random stratified sample consisted of 315 mothers and their adolescents. Results revealed that inhibitory maternal gatekeeping attitudes were positively associated with reports of inhibitory gatekeeping behaviors. Psychological control fully mediated the relationship between inhibitory gatekeeping attitudes, reports of inhibitory gatekeeping behaviors, and adolescent reports of maternal involvement. Though gatekeeping attitudes and behaviors were not associated with observed mother–adolescent warmth, psychological control was negatively associated with observed mother–adolescent warmth. …

Range Safety Concerns For Launching Winged Vehicles From Canaveral Spaceport, Wayne Devoid
Space Congress® Proceedings
The thrill of spaceflight has unleashed a flood of new space launch concepts in the United States. A host of reusable launch vehicles are being considered to launch private citizens on a suborbital jaunt to the edge of space. Private launch vehicle manufacturers are employing unique winged vehicle design concepts to attempt to significantly reduce the cost of launching space hardware. Additionally, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being tested for a myriad of applications such as border patrol, homeland security, military training, gathering scientific data, etc. Some of these UAV programs are poised to join space launch vehicles and commercial …
