Currently, the main options for the treatment of electronic waste are involved in reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling, as well as incineration and land filling. Recycling of e-waste can be broadly divided into three major steps: (a) disassembly: selectively disassembly, targeting on singling out hazardous or valuable components for special treatment, is an indispensable process in recycling of e-waste; (b) upgrading: using mechanical processing and/or metallurgical processing to up-grade desirable materials content, i. e. preparing materials for refining process; (c) refining: in the last step, recovered materials are retreated or purified by using chemical (metallurgical) processing so as to be acceptable …

Quantum-Secured Imaging, Mehul Malik, Omar S. Magaña-Loaiza, Robert W. Boyd

We have built an imaging system that uses a photon's position or time-of-flight information to image an object, while using the photon's polarization for security. This ability allows us to obtain an image which is secure against an attack in which the object being imaged intercepts and resends the imaging photons with modified information. Popularly known as "jamming," this type of attack is commonly directed at active imaging systems such as radar. In order to jam our imaging system, the object must disturb the delicate quantum state of the imaging photons, thus introducing statistical errors that reveal its activity. © …

We identify 69 X-ray sources discovered by the Galactic Bulge Survey (GBS) that are coincident with or very close to bright stars in the Tycho-2 catalog. Additionally, two other GBS sources are resolved binary companions to Tycho-2 stars where both components are separately detected in X-rays. Most of these are likely to be real matches, but we identify nine objects with large and significant X-ray-to-optical offsets as either detections of resolved binary companions or chance alignments. We collate known spectral types for these objects, and also examine Two Micron All Sky Survey colors, variability information from the All-Sky Automated Survey, …

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the carbon footprint and utilization rates in a data center. The long-term goal of this work is to give data center administrators an enhanced perspective of data center operations to allow for more energy efficient operation, to lower the carbon footprint, and to promote green data centers. Previous literature shows that low utilization rates in data centers are due to the forecasting of demand to meet spikes in data center use. This management policy has led to many servers running idle the majority of the time which is a waste of resources. …
Caffeination And Loop: Approaches To Literary And Science Fiction, Griffin O'Hara
Caffeination And Loop: Approaches To Literary And Science Fiction, Griffin O'Hara
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Griffin O'Hara's critical introduction to two of his original stories discusses the author’s merger of two genres, popular science fiction and literary fiction. Previous experiments with this combination appear in the novels of David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest and Samuel Delany’s Dhalgren. O’Hara’s analysis of Foster’s and Delany’s influences on his stories delineates the strengths of both science fiction and literary fiction and explains how the merger results in expanded communication between author and reader. The two original stories resulting from his experimentation and illustrating these ideas are “Caffeination” and “Loop.” “Caffeination” is a work of fiction that follows the …
Emotion Regulation Profiles: Identification Of Subgroups During Middle Childhood, Kelly Buckholdt
Emotion Regulation Profiles: Identification Of Subgroups During Middle Childhood, Kelly Buckholdt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study utilizes a unique approach for examining the role of emotion-related characteristics in predicting adjustment during childhood. The first aim of this study was to examine emotion-related characteristics using a person-centered approach in order to identify subgroups of children based on emotion regulation profiles. These profiles consisted of scores on nine emotion-related variables, assessed through children's self-reports of the experience and expression of sadness and anger, as well as the strategies they used for modifying these emotions. The second aim of the study was to determine if subgroup membership was associated with self- and peer-reports of adjustment (i.e., self-reported …
Thin Films Of Carbon Nanotubes And Nanotube/Polymer Composites, Anthony D. Willey
Thin Films Of Carbon Nanotubes And Nanotube/Polymer Composites, Anthony D. Willey
Theses and Dissertations
A method is described for ultrasonically spraying thin films of carbon nanotubes that have been suspended in organic solvents. Nanotubes were sonicated in N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone or N-Cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone and then sprayed onto a heated substrate using an ultrasonic spray nozzle. The solvent quickly evaporated, leaving a thin film of randomly oriented nanotubes. Film thickness was controlled by the spray time and ranged between 200-500 nm, with RMS roughness of about 40 nm. Also described is a method for creating thin (300 nm) conductive freestanding nanotube/polymer composite films by infiltrating sprayed nanotube films with polyimide.

The Far Field Transformation Using The Iterative Srm Based On The Phaseless Data, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Conventional equivalent source reconstruction methods (SRM) require both phase and amplitude information of the field data. However, there are situations where the phase information is not easy to obtain. Hence, developing novel SRM based on phaseless data is necessary. In this paper, a novel iterative SRM based on two sets of measured phaseless data is presented. It can reproduce the 3D radiation pattern with very good accuracy. Integral equation (IE) is employed to build reconstruct equivalent source. Combined field IE (CFIE) is also employed to obtain more physical current distribution. © 2012 IEEE.

This letter presents a novel dual-band (HF and UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna. Two key challenges are faced: the compact dimension and the impaired bandwidth due to the couplings between two band structures. To enable the implementation of whole design on a credit-card-size single-layer support, a spiral coil along the edges of the card is designed to handle the HF (13.56 MHz) near-field coupling, and the UHF antenna is placed inside the coil instead of outside. Meanwhile, a diagonal symmetric design consisting of two meander lines inside the spiral coil is adopted for UHF band. This structure supports …

Integral Equation Method For Analyzing Purcell Effect In Plasmonic System, Yongpin P. Chen, Weng Cho Chew, Wei E.I. Sha, W. C.H. Choy, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Integral equation method is applied to analyze the Purcell effect in plasmonic system in this paper. By applying the Fermi's golden rule, the Purcell effect of a quantum emitter can be calculated from the local density of states (LDOS), which can be further expressed by the imaginary part of the Green's function of the whole system. To obtain this Green's function numerically, the layered medium Green's function is utilized to simplify the modeling of planarly layered substrate, where the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be sustained. The metallic nano scatterers are introduced to excite the localized surface plasmons (LSP), and …

Helmholtz decomposition (HD) is a fundamental tool of vector calculus and plays an important role in electromagnetics. In this work, arbitrary vector field defined on the open or closed surface is decomposed into the sum of an irrotational (curl-free) vector field and a solenoidal (divergence-free) vector field by using the surface integral equation method. Unlike the popular loop-tree decomposition that is only a quasi-HD suitable for the circuit physics in the low frequency regime, the HD developed in this paper is rigorous and can capture both circuit and wave physics from very low frequency to high frequency regimes. The work …

An Efficient Method For Highly Oscillatory Physical Optics Integrals, Yu Mao Wu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Weng Cho Chew
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this work, we use the steepest descent path (SDP) method in the complex analysis to calculate the highly oscillatory physical optics (PO) integral with quadratic phase and amplitude variations on the triangular patch. Compared with traditional approximate asymptotic expansion approach, our method has significantly improved the PO integral accuracy by one to two digits (10 1 to 102) for evaluating the PO integral. Moreover, the computation effort for the highly oscillatory integral is frequency independent. © 2012 IEEE.

When distributed generation (DG) units operate in a microgrid environment, there is a need for coordinated operation between the DGs, the utility grid and the loads. a Microgrid Central Controller (MGCC) can keep track of the status from the systemic point of view and command the local micro source controllers (MC) to ensure system stability. in various modes of operation, vis-à-vis grid-connected, islanded and during transition from grid-connected to islanded mode and vice versa, the MGCC can support the MCs by feeding the necessary information to contribute towards stable system operation. This paper discusses the implementation of the MGCC for …

Reliability Evaluation Of Distribution Systems Containing Renewable Distributed Generations, Abdulaziz A. Alkuhayli, Srinath Raghavan, Badrul H. Chowdhury
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Reliability evaluation of distribution networks under grid-tied and islanded microgrid modes is presented. the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) algorithm is applied to a modified RBTS Bus 2 distribution network. the network includes three types of distributed energy resources, namely, solar photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), and diesel turbine generator (DTG). These distributed generators contribute to supply part of the load during grid-connected mode but supply 100% of the load in the islanded microgrid mode. This study shows that the implementation of distributed generations can improve the reliability indices of the distribution network. © 2012 IEEE.

HR 8799 is an hF0 mA5 γ Doradus-, λ Bootis-, Vega-type star best known for hosting four directly imaged candidate planetary companions. Using the CHARA Array interferometer, we measure HR 8799's limb-darkened angular diameter to be 0.342 ± 0.008 mas (an error of only 2%). By combining our measurement with the star's parallax and photometry from the literature, we greatly improve upon previous estimates of its fundamental parameters, including stellar radius (1.44 ± 0.06 R⊙), effective temperature (7193 ± 87 K, consistent with F0), luminosity (5.05 ± 0.29 L ⊙), and the extent of the habitable zone (HZ; 1.62-3.32 AU). …
