Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers
A primary cause of morbidity and mortality following cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) is respiratory compromise, regardless of the level of trauma. In particular, SCI at mid-cervical regions targets degeneration of both descending bulbospinal respiratory axons and cell bodies of phrenic motor neurons, resulting in deficits in the function of the diaphragm, the primary muscle of inspiration. Contusion-type trauma to the cervical spinal cord is one of the most common forms of human SCI; however, few studies have evaluated mid-cervical contusion in animal models or characterized consequent histopathological and functional effects of degeneration of phrenic motor neuron-diaphragm circuitry. We have …

Health Management and Policy Presentations
Fiscal pressures and policy imperatives have created a need for rigorous economic analyses of public health programs and policies. ROI analyses can reveal whether the benefits of public health strategies justify their costs, who realizes these benefits and costs, and under what circumstances.

It is well known that humans have the capacity to prefer certain rewards over others. This idea has been studied in animals and is considered the relative reward processing theory. Research conducted on primates and rodents have found that they form an opinion on, and behave according to the relative magnitude of a reward compared to others (Cromwell, Hasani, & Schultz, 2005; Onge, Chiu, & Floresco, 2010). It is also accepted experience the emotion of jealousy in response to many different situations including uneven reward payoff. It has been theorized that some nonhuman animals including primates and domestic dogs are …

Honors Projects
The final project consists of an Herbarium Collection redesign and a mock-up of an Interactive App. As a double major in Graphic Design and Biology, the author set out to create a project that would encompass both fields of study while also solving a problem the author had personally experienced within the field of Science. Currently there are only a few traditional approaches utilized by most college professors to teach scientific information to students. These methods include textbook readings, lectures, and PowerPoint presentations. It has been shown that the ways in which technical information is disseminated significantly affects learner comprehension …
Integrating Tax Preparation With Fafsa Completion: Three Case Models, Nathan Daun-Barnett, Beth Mabry
Integrating Tax Preparation With Fafsa Completion: Three Case Models, Nathan Daun-Barnett, Beth Mabry
Journal of Student Financial Aid
This research compares three different models implemented in four cities. The models integrated free tax-preparation services to assist low-income families with their completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). There has been an increased focus on simplifying the FAFSA process. However, simplification is not the only barrier that students face while completing the FAFSA. Tax preparation is also an integral part to FAFSA completion. This paper illuminates how four cities aim to integrate tax preparation and FAFSA completion through local community partners. While all four cities faced a variety of challenges reaching their target populations at a …

Book Review: The Financial Aid Handbook: Getting The Education You Want For The Price You Can Afford, Margot J. O'Meara
Journal of Student Financial Aid
The Financial Aid Handbook: Getting the Education You Want for the Price You Can Affordby Carol Stack and Ruth Vedik is a very timely publication due to the increased discussion regarding mounting student debt, the increasing cost of college, and the desire for more consumer information. The authors have a combined 70 years of experience in the college admission and financial aid fields, and currently work as principals at Hardwick-Day, an enrollment consulting firm that works with the admissions and financial aid offices of private colleges and universities. The Handbook, written primarily for high school students and their parents, presents …

Increased Normal Incidence Photocurrent In Quantum Dot Infrared Photodetectors, Jiayi Shao, Thomas E. Vandervelde, Ajit Barve, Andreas Stintz, Sanjay Krishna
Birck and NCN Publications
We have increased the ratio of s-polarization (normal incidence) to p-polarization photocurrent to 50% in a quantum dot-in-a-well based infrared photodetector form the typical s-p polarization ratio about 20%. This improvement was achieved by engineering the dot geometry and the quantum confinement via post growth capping materials of the Stranski Krastanov growth mode quantum dots (QDs). The TEM images show that the height to base ratio of shape engineered QDs was increased to 8 nm/12 nm from the control sample's ratio 4 nm/17 nm. The dot geometry correlates with the polarized photocurrent measurements of the detector. (C) 2012 American Institute …
Using A Cognitive Architecture In Incremental Sentence Processing, Jeremiah Lane Mcghee
Using A Cognitive Architecture In Incremental Sentence Processing, Jeremiah Lane Mcghee
Theses and Dissertations
XNL-Soar is a specialized implementation of the Soar cognitive architecture. The version of XNL-Soar described in this thesis builds upon and extends prior research (Lewis, 1993; Rytting,2000) using Soar for natural language processing. This thesis describes the updates made to operators creating syntactic structure and the improved coverage of syntactic phenomena. It describes the addition of semantic structure building capability. This thesis also details the implementation of semantic memory and describes two experiments utilizing semantic memory in structural disambiguation. This thesis shows that XNL-Soar, as currently instantiated, resolves ambiguities common in language using strategies and resources including: reanalysis via snip …

Supporting Professionalism In Educational Development In Irish Higher Education, Muireann Okeeffe
Articles
Higher education, in Ireland and globally, is undergoing profound change influenced by a variety of factors. In conjunction with these changes many initiatives to improve teaching and learning and the quality of graduates in higher education have been introduced in recent years. The changes and expansions in the sector has enabled growth of new roles in higher education described as ‘third space’ professionals by Whitchurch (2008).
This paper describes the struggle of those in third space professions, such as academic development, to establish a professional identity in higher education. The benefits of these contemporary roles to higher education are …

Gender Relations Of Space: Impact On Women’S Leadership In Nigeria [Pilot Study], Oluremi Alapo
Gender Relations Of Space: Impact On Women’S Leadership In Nigeria [Pilot Study], Oluremi Alapo
Publications and Research
This qualitative phenomenological research study examines women in Nigeria and how they continue to face enormous set-backs regarding development and leadership capabilities. The socio and economic roles that many women occupy in Nigerian society affects leadership roles, especially in the context of sexual division of labor and in decision-making. The national and family culture present prevents women to fully adapt to innovative 21st century leadership. Culture is socialized in a person through the shared values of social groups that in turn play key roles in a person’s cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. The national and family culture is one in …
