Most academics are fired up for research right after graduate school, but after a few years on the job, the flame might wane. Perhaps you are over-burdened with service or administration and can't imagine finding time for a research project. Budget cuts may have you feeling overworked or uninspired. Perhaps you've achieved your goal of becoming tenured and you wonder what comes next. The purpose of this collection of essays, presented originally at a 2011 midwinter conference, is to share ways to stoke a passion for research. For this study, the researcher sought to implement a visual arts-based Afrivisual to help inspire, motivate and empower African American students in gaining a culturally relevant education in Euro-American-centered schools. Using the Afrivisual in this work as an action-oriented tool the researcher sought to expose African American students to an African historical context.

This research project utilized three African-centered theoretical frameworks: (1) Afrocentricity, (2) Africana Philosophy, and (3) Africana Critical Theory. Very little previous work has been done at the Late Woodland Shady Grove site. This thesis will examine and reconfirm some of the previous conclusions about this site's placement within the temporal framework of the Northern Yazoo Basin. The Late Woodland and Mississippian occupations of the site used the same space in decidedly different ways. How the use of space has changed through time will be examined from several different perspectives, including geophysical survey and the intra-site distribution of artifacts.

Despite over six decades of reform initiatives, the overwhelming drift of security arrangements in the United States has been toward greater-not lessexecutive centralization and discretion. This Article explores why efforts to curb presidential prerogative have failed so consistently. It argues that while constitutional scholars have overwhelmingly focused their attention on procedural solutions, the underlying reason for the growth of emergency powers is ultimately political rather than purely legal. While such projects have often resulted in transformative innovations, in a number of instances, researchers have deliberately violated legal requirements and/or ethical norms governing research with human subjects. The rules governing the lawfulness of land use decisions are a mess. State enabling acts elide distinguishable and plural objectives of the police powers. Courts — especially state courts — generally fail to distinguish between different types of challenges and different types of land use regulatory actions. As a result, courts typically resort to the deferential position that the Supreme Court adopted in Village of Euclid, Ohio v. Ambler Realty Co., even where that standard of review is wholly inappropriate.

Recent controversies, such as enactment of an individual mandate to purchase health insurance and the legalization of assisted suicide in Washington and Montana, have renewed the war over personal autonomy. Debates about the value and limits of personal autonomy also play major roles in the controversies over abortion, same-sex intimacy, and same-sex marriage. This article will assess the roles and responsibilities of Special Operations Forces (SOF) within the newly created U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) as an active proponent of a so-called “smart power” national security strategy. Virulence factors of pathogenic bacteria are to be blamed for life-threatening infections such as diphtheria, anthrax, botulism, and tentanus. In the case of enzymatic exotoxins, disease arises from cytotoxic proteins, and cytotoxicity is acheived only after cell entry. This intrinsic mechanism for cell entry is intriguing from research and medical views. Along with a review on existing cargo delivery systems utilizing protein toxins and the usefulness of such a system, here is described the first reported Clostridium difficile toxin A fusion protein, luciferase-TcdA, and evidence of the successful transport of an active enzyme, luciferase, into the cytosol of vero cells. …

Competitive pressures and rent-seeking behaviors have motivated companies and investors to develop indirect techniques for beneficially exploiting third-party intellectual property rights (IPRs) that qualitatively depart from the direct exploitation tools honed during the past thirty years of the pro-patent era. Among other things, companies have realized that they do not even need to own IPRs in order to consequently benefit from their exploitation. This phenomenon is labeled here "IP privateering" because of its similarities to an historic method of waging war on the high seas. Women war correspondents have overcome gender bias to be able to perform the same work as men in their field. This thesis looks at the history of women war correspondents starting with Margaret Bourke-White during World War II through Christine Amanpour in the 2003 Iraqi War. Through tension with the military over censure and editors for rights to work, these women's work has withstood scrutiny over the years.
