Examining The Role Of Identity In Negotiation Decision Making: The Case Of Cyprus, Cigdem Sirin

This study examines the effects of ethnic and social identities on negotiation decision making in the context of the Cyprus conflict. I conduct a theory-driven case study of the 1959 Zurich-London agreements on Cyprus, analyzing the positions of Turkey, Greece, Britain, and the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities during the negotiation process. I find that even in the presence of adversarial ethnic ties, decision makers who have a shared (and salient) social identity are more likely to employ collective-serving decision strategies and seek evenhanded solutions that will not jeopardize their mutual interests. Fire has played an important role in shaping the plant and animal communities of the Central Great Plains region. Lightning fires as well as those of anthropogenic origin were frequent during the period of historical interest for most parks. An era of fire suppression has led to changes in natural communities, however. Current prescribed fire programs in the region aim to restore or maintain ecosystems and reduce fuel loads in hopes of preventing catastrophic wildfire.

Nephite apostates turned away from true worship in consistent and predictable ways throughout the Book of Mormon. T heir beliefs and practices may have been the result of influence from the larger socioreligious context in which the Nephites lived. A Mesoamerican setting provides a plausible cultural background that explains why Nephite apostasy took the par ticular form it did and may help us gain a deeper understanding of some specific references that Nephite prophets used when com bating that apostasy. This thesis assesses a growing trend in the writing of history, which attends to the various roles and conceptions of the senses throughout history. Proceeding from a discussion of the sometimes unique and sometimes standard methodologies of the habit of "sensory history," the various implications and problems of such an approach are suggested and explored using a once widely accepted historical framework known as the "great divide." The Tet Offensive was a surprise military campaign conduced by the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army in early 1968 that resulted in simultaneous battles stretching from towns to cities to 27 U.S. military installations. It was a military victory for the U.S. and a political victory for the communist opposition. The media's role in framing the battle was substantial. Despite winning the battle, the U.S. military saw support for the war weaken, and the U.S. lost the war. Antiwar democratic presidential candidates Senators Eugene McCarthy and Robert Kennedy were strengthened by the Tet Offensive, and President Johnson announced …

This thesis investigates the complex social phenomenon of ethnicity manifesting in the artwork of Norwegian black metal albums. Black metal is a genre of heavy metal that developed during the 1980's. After 1990, the development of black metal began to make great strides in Norway, birthing the genre of "Norwegian black metal" and its resultant scene. This small scene quickly became infamous for the violent acts, including arson and murder, that were carried out by some of its members. In this creative project, I produced seven sonic compositions interpreting and strategizing my work with some key aspects of Luce Irigaray's political thought on Woman. Irigaray's thought on Woman has a strong political and ethical prerogative which is important for a provisionally embodied search for a women's place in politics and language. I rematerialized Irigaray's thought on speaking (as) Woman, mimicry, and disjunctive becoming, as a way of thinking about performing, listening to, and creating music. This thesis, an examination of the autumns of the Ottoman and British Empires examines the social, political, and economic factors leading to the decline and dissolution of the Ottoman and British Empires. The interment of artifacts in caches among the ancient Maya have proven to be an important feature of the worldviews and cultural facets of functioning urban centers. The "shaft caches" recovered from Structure 4 at the site of Blue Creek, Belize reveal information that aids our understanding of the Maya. The caches reflect the wealth of Blue Creek at the time of their interment during the Early Classic Period and before the progression ending in the city's abandonment during the Terminal Classic Period. The purpose of this thesis is to provide an empirical examination of the wage share and profit share of Gross Domestic Product in the United States, as well as to shed light on future avenues for further research related to the topic. Comparisons of the shares are modeled as multivariate equations and estimated using Ordinary Least Squares in EViews 7.0. The determinants in each model are loosely categorized under four broad topics that reflect aspects of the federal government, the private sector, American workers and monetary policy. This thesis discusses the life of Countess Matilda of Canossa (1046�1115) and her participation in the Investiture Contest, one of the most significant conflicts of the Middle Ages. Matilda's involvement in the Investiture Contest demonstrates how she managed to retain her autonomy in Tuscany by establishing a close relationship with the Gregorian papacy and thus demonstrates the roles that women could play in medieval politics. While many noblewomen were able to take on substantial roles in medieval society, Matilda's position was quite unique. This thesis compares the atmosphere of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 to the trial of Ethel Rosenberg in the period of McCarthyism. The thesis considers how they both resulted in witch-hunts. To explain the parallel process, I use the trials and the circumstances of George Burroughs, a seventeenth century New England minister accused of working with the Devil, to Ethel Rosenberg, a housewife with ties to the Communist Party who was convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage and was, along with her husband, the first American civilians to be executed for treason in 1953. This study examines the leadership style Father Angel Torellas used through music education at the Batahola Norte Center in Managuo, Nicaragua. This paper presents the design and implementation of a low power embedded system using mobile processor technology (Intel Atom™ Z530 Processor) specifically tailored for a neural-machine interface (NMI) for artificial limbs. This embedded system effectively performs our previously developed NMI algorithm based on neuromuscular-mechanical fusion and phase-dependent pattern classification. The analysis shows that NMI embedded system can meet real-time constraints with high accuracies for recognizing the user's locomotion mode. Our implementation utilizes the mobile processor efficiently to allow a power consumption of 2.2 watts and low CPU utilization (less than 4.3%) while executing the complex NMI algorithm.
