Relating Nanoparticle Properties To Biological Outcomes In Exposure Escalation Experiments, Trina Patel, Cecile Low-Kam, Zhaoxia Ji, Haiyuan Zhang, Tian Xia, Andre E. Nel, Jeffrey I. Zinc, Donatello Telesca

COBRA Preprint Series

A fundamental goal in nano-toxicology is that of identifying particle physical and chemical properties, which are likely to explain biological hazard. The first line of screening for potentially adverse outcomes often consists of exposure escalation experiments, involving the exposure of micro-organisms or cell lines to a battery of nanomaterials. We discuss a modeling strategy, that relates the outcome of an exposure escalation experiment to nanoparticle properties. Our approach makes use of a hierarchical decision process, where we jointly identify particles that initiate adverse biological outcomes and explain the probability of this event in terms of the particle physico-chemical descriptors. The …

Modeling The Effects Of The Local Environment On A Received Gnss Signal, Marshall E. Haker

Theses and Dissertations

There is an ongoing need in the GNSS community for the development of high-fidelity simulators which generate data that replicates what can truly be expected from a challenging environment such as an urban canyon or an indoor environment. The algorithm developed for use in the research in this dissertation, the Signal Decomposition and Parameterization Algorithm (SDPA), is presented in order to respond to this need. This algorithm is designed to decompose a signal received using a GNSS recording and playback system and output parameters that can be used to reconstruct the effects on the signal of the environment local to …

Game Theory Approach To Transportation Network Vulnerability Measurement, Qixing Wang Dec 2012

Game Theory Approach To Transportation Network Vulnerability Measurement, Qixing Wang

Master's Theses

The vulnerability of a transportation network is strongly correlated with the ability of the network to withstand shocks and disruptions. A robust network with strategic redundancy allows for the redistribution or reassignment of traffic without unduly compromising system performance. As such, high-volume edges with limited alternative paths represent system vulnerabilities – a feature of transportation networks that has been exploited in the past to identify critical components. In this thesis, a mixed-strategy, two opponents, non-zero sum, combinatorial game theoretical framework are presented for measuring network vulnerability. Two solution approaches (Shortest Path Algorithm with Entropy function (SPE) & User Equilibrium Assignment …

Biohydrogen Production From Palm Oil Mill Effluent (Pome) In An Anaerobic Hybrid Bioreactor / Parviz Mohammadi, Mohammadi Parviz Dec 2012

Biohydrogen Production From Palm Oil Mill Effluent (Pome) In An Anaerobic Hybrid Bioreactor / Parviz Mohammadi, Mohammadi Parviz

Student Works (2010-2019)

The effects of various pretreatment methods on the enrichment of H2 evolving bacterial population and their hydrogen production efficiency using palm oil mill effluent (POME) as substrate were studied. Heat shock pretreatment was shown to be the most effective in enhancing the biological H2 production. Up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket fixed film (UASB-FF) bioreactor is a modern bioreactor and was used to generate of biological hydrogen with the help of granulated microbial aggregates. A lab scale UASB-FF bioreactor (2.55 lit) with an external settling tank was successfully designed and operated for biohydrogen production from POME. The use of packing media in …

Change Management: Antecedents And Consequences In Casino Crm, Sudhir H. Kale

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) continues to attract increasing attention within the casino industry. While the vital role of change management in making CRM projects successful has been acknowledged for quite some time, there is little in extant literature to explain the nature and conduct of change management in the CRM context. This article posits that relevant change management is a prerequisite for successful implementation of a casino's CRM. Change management involves five key initiatives: selling change internally, creating an appropriate infrastructure for change management, CRM-relevant training, a reconfiguration of the organization structure and performance assessment measures, and recasting existing incentive …

Wages In Las Vegas And Reno: How Much Difference Do Unions Make In The Hotel, Gaming, And Recreation Industry?, C. Jeffrey Waddoups

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

A significant union presence in the Las Vegas, Nevada Hotel, Gaming, and Recreation (HGR) industry juxtaposed to the near absence of unions in the Reno, Nevada segment of the same industry is used to study how unions affect wages both within the industry and in a much less unionized sector, the Wholesale and Retail Trade (WRT) industry. The results indicate that median wages of highly unionized occupations in the Las Vegas HGR industry are significantly higher than wages of identical occupations in Reno. Little difference in wages is observed in the WRT industries of the two regions. In light of …

Kentucky Parimutuel Revenue Policy Simulator, J. Shannon Neibergs

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Since Kentucky introduced inter-track wagering in 1988, and inter-state wagering in 1994, there has been an ongoing substitution of declining live handle with increasing simulcasting handle. Also, since 1995 there has been a marked increase in competition from alternative gaming. At issue is the net effect on parimutuel stakeholder revenue relative to changes in the distribution of parimutuel handle and increased competition. This paper presents a parimutuel revenue budget that can be used to evaluate the marginal revenue of changes in policies, or of actions taken in response to increased competition from alternative gaming.

The Case For Casino Gaming, Christian Marfels Dec 2012

The Case For Casino Gaming, Christian Marfels

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Casino gaming in the United States is the fastest growing segment of the expanding entertainment industry. Nevertheless, gaming opponents continue to spread arguments against gaming which are based on their moral-ethical beliefs. In contrast, this paper makes the case for gaming by looking at the economic reality. In the real world, casino operators provide the best products in highly competitive markets, gaming contributes net economic benefits to society, and the alleged substitution effect of gaming does not exist.

Mentorship Modes: Strategies For Influencing Interactive Learners, Brad Gyori

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

In the age of the Internet, students are clamoring for immersive and participatory learning experiences, but how can teachers share autonomy without losing control of their classrooms? In an effort to address this important question, this article suggests three mentorship modes that educators can employ in order to effectively engage with today’s interactive learners. Lecture-based instruction is a single mode form of teaching in which information is disseminated by a lone authority-figure. In contrast, learning-centered mentorship is a three-mode process in which autonomy is shared and authority flows in multiple directions at once: bottom-up (modeling), laterally (collaborating), and top-down (organizing …

Power, Responsibility & Wisdom: Exploring The Issues At The Core Of Ethical Decision-Making And Leadership, Bruce Lloyd Dec 2012

Power, Responsibility & Wisdom: Exploring The Issues At The Core Of Ethical Decision-Making And Leadership, Bruce Lloyd

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Decision-making ostensibly requires the exercise of Power. But that use of Power must be counterbalanced with Responsibility in order to make good decisions. Infusing Wisdom into the decision-making process necessarily incorporates an ethical component and involves both the identification and evaluation of relationships. Wise decision-making, therefore, requires the application of Wisdom which transcends simple, short-lived factual proficiency. It is this careful weighing of Wisdom, Power, Knowledge, and Responsibility which must guide our business leaders and be taught to our business students.
