Expansin Synergy With Cellulases: Development Of A Transgenic Maize System For Expansin Production And Evaluation Of Synergistic Activity On Lignocellulosic Substrates, Sangwoong Yoon Dec 2012

Expansin Synergy With Cellulases: Development Of A Transgenic Maize System For Expansin Production And Evaluation Of Synergistic Activity On Lignocellulosic Substrates, Sangwoong Yoon

Student Theses and Dissertations

One of the greatest barriers to produce biofuels from lignocellulosic material is efficient cellulose depolymerization by cellulase activity. Expansin is a protein that is active in cell wall expansion in growing regions of most plants. Because of this unique activity, expansin synergistic activity with cellulase is believed to lower the depolymerization barrier. Over-expression of expansin in the maize production system is designed to produce sufficient protein 1) to study its physiological effects, and 2) to assess its ability to serve as an industrial enzyme for applications, particularly in biomass conversion. Transgenic lines of maize that express the cucumber expansin gene …

Returns To Schooling: A Quantile Regression, Arman Oganisian Dec 2012

Returns To Schooling: A Quantile Regression, Arman Oganisian

Economics Student Scholarship

This paper contributes to the large body of economic literature that attempts to estimate the returns to schooling. It uses quantile regression to estimate the effect of an additional year of education on monthly wage for earners in different quantiles. Using data from the young men’s cohort of the National Longitudinal Survey, the paper attempts to control for ability, family background, geography, and race, and finds that the returns to schooling is approximately 3.49% for men. Furthermore, the paper finds that while the effect of education on earnings is not significantly different from quantile to quantile, the significance of education …

The Effect Of Native Oxide On Ion-Sputtering-Induced Nanostructure Formation On Gasb Surfaces, Osman El-Atwani, Jean Paul Allain, Anastassiya Suslova Dec 2012

The Effect Of Native Oxide On Ion-Sputtering-Induced Nanostructure Formation On Gasb Surfaces, Osman El-Atwani, Jean Paul Allain, Anastassiya Suslova

Birck and NCN Publications

We have investigated the influence of native oxides on ion-sputtering-induced nanostructure formation on GaSb using in situ low energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEISS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Comparing an oxygen-free sample with a native oxide sample, LEISS and XPS reveal the effect of oxygen in generating higher surface Ga fractions during early stages (fluences of 1 x 10(15)-1 x 10(16) cm(-2)) of low energy (< 100 eV) Ar+ irradiation. Enhanced surface Ga and Ga2O3 fractions were also observed on "oxide free" samples exposed to air following irradiation. The results suggest preferential Ga oxidation and segregation on the top of the amorphous layer if oxygen is present on the surface. In addition, the native oxide also increases the fluence threshold for nanopatterning of GaSb surfaces by almost a factor of four during low energy irradiation. Evaluating Dust Palliative Performance And Longevity Using The Uaf-Dustm, Travis Warren Eckhoff Dec 2012

Evaluating Dust Palliative Performance And Longevity Using The Uaf-Dustm, Travis Warren Eckhoff

Engineering

Fugitive dust emissions from gravel surfaces such as unpaved roads and airport runways are a major source of particulate matter pollution in the environment. Fugitive dust emissions impact community health, decrease visibility and contribute to surface degradation. Chemical additives, also known as dust palliatives, are often used to reduce these dust emissions. Although these products have been widely used, little is known about their effectiveness and longevity. There is currently no standard test method to quantify the reduction in fugitive dust emissions provided by dust palliatives. The UAF-DUSTM was developed to provide a consistent test method for determining the effectiveness …

Characterizing The Berthing Load Environment Of The Seattle Ferry Teminal, Bremerton Slip, Jason E. Kwiatkowski Dec 2012

Characterizing The Berthing Load Environment Of The Seattle Ferry Teminal, Bremerton Slip, Jason E. Kwiatkowski

Engineering

This manuscript characterizes and presents design recommendations for berthing demands on ferry landing structures. There is a lack of research focused on the berthing load demand imparted by ferry class vessels, therefore the load criteria used for design is often based on a number of assumptions. This study involved a one-year field study of the structural load environment of wingwalls at the Bremerton Slip of the Seattle Ferry Terminal, located in Elliott Bay adjacent to Seattle, Washington. Measurements of marine fender displacement, vessel approach distance with respect to time, and. pile strain were used to determine berthing demands. Berthing event …

Transient Spatiotemporal Chaos In A Morris-Lecar Neuronal Ring Network Collapses To Either The Rest State Or A Traveling Pulse, Keegan Keplinger Dec 2012

Transient Spatiotemporal Chaos In A Morris-Lecar Neuronal Ring Network Collapses To Either The Rest State Or A Traveling Pulse, Keegan Keplinger

Physics

Transient spatiotemporal dynamics exists in an electrically coupled Morris-Lecar neuronal ring network, a theoretical model of an axo-axonic gap junction network. The lifetime of spatiotemporal chaos was found to grow exponentially with network size. Transient dynamics regularly collapses from a chaotic state to either the resting potential or a traveling pulse, indicating the existence of a chaotic saddle. For special conditions, a chaotic attractor can arise in the Morris-Lecar network to which transient chaos can collapse. The short-term outcome of a Morris-Lecar ring network is determined as a function of perturbation configuration. Perturbing small clusters of nearby neurons in the …

Incorporating Stakeholder Input In Research Priorities For The Aleutian Islands, Rachael Margaret Wadsworth Dec 2012

Incorporating Stakeholder Input In Research Priorities For The Aleutian Islands, Rachael Margaret Wadsworth

Fisheries

Federal law requires that resource management agencies consider stakeholder input in the selection of preferred alternatives for proposed actions. Not only do stakeholders contribute unique perspectives on the impact of alternative actions and the desirability of various policy objectives, including stakeholders in the decision process adds to the perceived legitimacy of those decisions. Incorporating stakeholder input is legally required and advantageous to sustainable governance of the oceans and implementation of a National Ocean Policy such as ecosystem-based management. Agencies use a variety of formal and informal mechanisms to solicit and incorporate stakeholder input. In this study, we compare expert panel …

Dynamic Interactions Of Snow And Plants In The Boreal Forest, Winter 2011-2012 Revealed By Time-Lapse Photography And Lidar, Simon Filhol, Matthew Sturm Dec 2012

Dynamic Interactions Of Snow And Plants In The Boreal Forest, Winter 2011-2012 Revealed By Time-Lapse Photography And Lidar, Simon Filhol, Matthew Sturm

Research Posters

As winter progresses, snow accumulates on the ground and plants of the boreal forest. On their passage to the ground, the falling snowflakes encounter physical obstacles like the complex structure of tree branches and shrubs. These cause the fall trajectories to deviate, and in some cases even stop, before a snowflake reaches the forest floor. After deposition, wind and gravitational settlement further affect the snow distribution. Because of these snow-vegetation interactions, snow gets distributed in the forest along vertical and the horizontal directions in a complex way. To better understand these interactions between snow and plants, we designed an experiment, …

Gene, Pathway And Network Frameworks To Identify Epistatic Interactions Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Derived From Gwas Data, Yu Liu, Sean Maxwell, Tao Feng, Xiaofeng Zhu, Robert C. Elston, Mehmet Koyutürk, Mark R. Chance Dec 2012

Gene, Pathway And Network Frameworks To Identify Epistatic Interactions Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Derived From Gwas Data, Yu Liu, Sean Maxwell, Tao Feng, Xiaofeng Zhu, Robert C. Elston, Mehmet Koyutürk, Mark R. Chance

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Interactions among genomic loci (also known as epistasis) have been suggested as one of the potential sources of missing heritability in single locus analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The computational burden of searching for interactions is compounded by the extremely low threshold for identifying significant p-values due to multiple hypothesis testing corrections. Utilizing prior biological knowledge to restrict the set of candidate SNP pairs to be tested can alleviate this problem, but systematic studies that investigate the relative merits of integrating different biological frameworks and GWAS data have not been conducted. Results: We developed four biologically based frameworks to …

The Role Of Customer Engagement In Innovation Adoption, Scott A. Skiple Dec 2012

The Role Of Customer Engagement In Innovation Adoption, Scott A. Skiple

Theses and Dissertations

Full knowledge of a customer's true unmet need should improve the likelihood of providing that customer with an Option that meets the need. Since there is inherent risk in making any change, that customer will be more likely to accept the risk they more they understand the option. Both the customer and the solution provider possess knowledge that the other needs, knowledge which is often highly contextual and difficult to transfer, and thus a sufficiently close relationship between the customer and the solution provider should improve this knowledge transfer. It is, however, exceedingly difficult to measure this relationship, or the …

Developing A Decision Support System For Emergency Management Services In The Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, Katherine E. Schaefer Dec 2012

Developing A Decision Support System For Emergency Management Services In The Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, Katherine E. Schaefer

Geosciences

Every year the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB), in interior Alaska, responds to common emergencies, as well as disasters of varying types. This research first tested several geographic information systems (GIS) based network analysis models to demonstrate how these models could serve as 'decision support' tools for emergency planning and response. Six network analysis models based on FNSB data were evaluated to determine the response times of local fire stations. Each model was tested against real call times and simulated summertime fire emergency response call times to verify model accuracy. The simulated times matched the modeled predictions with remarkably high …

Characterizing The Fish Community In Turbid Alaskan Rivers To Assess Potential Interactions With Hydrokinetic Devices, Parker T. Bradley Dec 2012

Characterizing The Fish Community In Turbid Alaskan Rivers To Assess Potential Interactions With Hydrokinetic Devices, Parker T. Bradley

Fisheries

The Yukon and Tanana rivers are two large, glacially turbid rivers in Alaska, where hydrokinetic projects are being explored for feasibility of electricity production. Downstream migration behavior of fishes in these rivers is poorly understood; as a result, the potential impacts of hydrokinetic devices, which will be placed in the deepest and fastest part of the river, on fishes are unknown. Downstream migrating fishes were sampled during the ice-free season along the river margins of the Yukon River in 2010 and the river margins and mid-channel of the Tanana River in 2011. Results suggest that the river margins in the …

Module-Based Subnetwork Alignments Reveal Novel Transcriptional Regulators In Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, Hong Cai, Changjin Hong, Jianying Gu, Timothy G. Lilburn, Rui Kuang, Yufeng Wang Dec 2012

Module-Based Subnetwork Alignments Reveal Novel Transcriptional Regulators In Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, Hong Cai, Changjin Hong, Jianying Gu, Timothy G. Lilburn, Rui Kuang, Yufeng Wang

Publications and Research

Background Malaria causes over one million deaths annually, posing an enormous health and economic burden in endemic regions. The completion of genome sequencing of the causative agents, a group of parasites in the genus Plasmodium, revealed potential drug and vaccine candidates. However, genomics-driven target discovery has been significantly hampered by our limited knowledge of the cellular networks associated with parasite development and pathogenesis. In this paper, we propose an approach based on aligning neighborhood PPI subnetworks across species to identify network components in the malaria parasite P. falciparum. Results Instead of only relying on sequence similarities to detect functional orthologs, …

Impacts Of Sea Otter Predation On Commercially Important Sea Cucumbers (Parastichopus Californicus) In Southeast Alaska, Sean D. Larson Dec 2012

Impacts Of Sea Otter Predation On Commercially Important Sea Cucumbers (Parastichopus Californicus) In Southeast Alaska, Sean D. Larson

Fisheries

Consequences from management actions, particularly those regarding species reintroductions, are not always immediately apparent. After sea otters were extirpated from Southeast Alaska in the 18th and 19th century fur trade, it is presumed that marine invertebrate stocks grew in the absence of sea otter predation. Since reintroduction in the 1960s, the Southeast Alaska sea otter population has grown, with great potential to deplete the commercially important sea cucumber, Parastichopus californicus. This study evaluates the interaction with and impacts of sea otters on sea cucumbers using foraging observations and sea cucumber density data collected for fishery management. Sea otter diets, in …

Subsistence Salmon Fishing In Beaufort Sea Communities, Shelley S.D. Cotton Dec 2012

Subsistence Salmon Fishing In Beaufort Sea Communities, Shelley S.D. Cotton

Fisheries

Environmental change, combined with observations of increasing numbers of salmon in subsistence fisheries, has generated a need for more information about salmon use, abundance, and distribution in the Arctic. Ethnographic research was conducted in Barrow and Nuiqsut, Alaska, in 2010 and 2011 with 41 active fishermen and elders. Salmon catches were perceived to be increasing; however, perceptions about changing salmon abundance were mixed. While pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and chum salmon (O. keta) have been observed in subsistence fisheries in the central North Slope region for over 50 years, only within the last 10 to 20 years has local use …

The Impact Of A Fluctuating Freezing Front On Ice Formation In Freezing Soil, Matthew Ryan Dillon Dec 2012

The Impact Of A Fluctuating Freezing Front On Ice Formation In Freezing Soil, Matthew Ryan Dillon

Engineering

Frost heave is typically associated with the formation of segregation ice in fine-grained soil. Coarse-grained soil is generally considered to be non-frost susceptible. Field observa-tions and laboratory experiments show that coarse-grained soil can be extremely ice-rich in specific conditions. Previous studies have shown that oscillation of the frozen-unfrozen boundary can lead to the formation of ice by a mechanism different from the segregation ice mechanism. Conditions related to the formation of ice in coarse-grained soil were in-vestigated using modern laboratory techniques. Fourteen tests were conducted on five soil types. The thickness of soil subjected to freeze-thaw cycles was varied and …

Study On The Start-Up Schemes For The Three-Stage Solid State Transformer Applications, Xiaohu Liu, Liming Liu, Hui Li, Keith Corzine, Tangtang Guo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates two stage-by-stage start-up schemes for a three-stage solid state transformer (SST) that includes a high frequency transformer. the DC-DC converter transformer current dynamics analysis presented in this paper shows that the stage-by-stage start-up scheme may lead to a relatively large transformer current. as a result, the DC-DC converter would suffer a relatively large input inrush current. the pre-charge start-up scheme can improve the transformer current profile during the transient. the detailed analysis of those two-start-up scheme is presented and the experimental verification on laboratory prototype proved the analysis of stage-by-stage start-up scheme. © 2012 IEEE.

Distributed Development And Product Line Decisions, Ram Bala, V. Krishnan, Wenge Zhu Dec 2012

Distributed Development And Product Line Decisions, Ram Bala, V. Krishnan, Wenge Zhu

Information Systems and Analytics

Distributed product development is becoming increasingly prevalent in a number of industries. We study how the global distribution of product development impacts the profit-maximizing product line that a firm offers. Specifically, we formulate a model to understand the linkage between cost arbitrage as a driver of distributed development and consequent market implications such as customer perceived quality loss to remotely developed products. Analysis of the model reveals that a firm should expand the product line for a development-intensive good only at intermediate values of cost advantage and quality loss. We modify the base model to include development capacity constraints as …

A Depolymerization Based Model Of Neuron Growth Cone Shape And Motility, Neerajha Nagarajan Dec 2012

A Depolymerization Based Model Of Neuron Growth Cone Shape And Motility, Neerajha Nagarajan

Master's Theses

Cell migration is a ubiquitous process underlying critical biological mechanisms like wound healing, cancer metastasis and even neuron growth cone motility. It is a critical process for the living organisms as it ensures proper functioning of the system, for example, crawling fibroblasts endure closure of wounds during wound healing. Here we focus our interest on neuron growth cones, a sensory and motile organelle present at the tip of extending neurites, like the axons, in neurons. These are responsible for neuron pathfinding onto specific targets and synapses, in responses to various guidance cues. Interestingly, the motility of the growth cones is …
